DEN HAAG (ANP) - Het demissionaire kabinet wil instemmen met het omstreden EU-Mercosurverdrag. Dat schrijven minister David van Weel en staatssecretaris Aukje de Vries (beiden Buitenlandse Zaken, VVD) in een brief aan de Tweede Kamer. Het handelsverdrag tussen de EU en de Mercosur-landen (Argentinië, Brazilië, Paraguay en Uruguay) is al ruim 25 jaar in de maak en krijgt veel kritiek in de Kamer.

Een motie van 2 oktober om het verdrag te steunen werd met ruime meerderheid verworpen. Vooral de zorgen over oneerlijke concurrentie voor Nederlandse boeren, extra ontbossing en te zwakke milieubescherming speelden daarbij een rol.

Het kabinet vindt echter dat de voordelen zwaarder wegen dan de nadelen. Van Weel en De Vries wijzen op de economische kansen en de geopolitieke context, waarin Rusland aan invloed wint en de relatie met de VS verandert.

Met de nieuwe Kamerverhoudingen lijkt er nu een krappe meerderheid voor het verdrag te zijn, als de partijen hetzelfde stemmen als in oktober.

BENGALURU (ANP) - Suzan Lamens heeft de tweede partij in de Billie Jean King Cup tussen Nederland en Slovenië verloren. De nummer 1 van Nederland ging in drie sets ten onder tegen Kaja Juvan: 6-7(5) 6-4 3-6. Hoewel het team van captain Elise Tamaëla wel het dubbelspel van het eerste groepsduel won, is Oranje zo goed als uitgeschakeld. Nederland speelt zondag de tweede en laatste groepswedstrijd tegen India.

Voordat Lamens van Kaja Juvan verloor, was Arantxa Rus eerder vrijdag in haar eerste partij in het Indiase Bengaluru in twee sets ten onder gegaan tegen Tamara Zidansek. Het dubbelspel werd wel gewonnen. Het Nederlandse duo Lamens-Demi Schuurs won in twee sets van het Sloveense dubbel Dalila Jakupovic-Nika Radisic: 6-4 6-0. Daardoor eindigde de ontmoeting in 2-1 voor Slovenië.

Nederland probeert in een play-off met verder gastland India in de Wereldgroep van het landentennis te blijven. De kans dat Oranje nog groepswinnaar wordt en volgend jaar in de kwalificaties voor het eindtoernooi speelt, is nihil. Zelfs een zege op India is waarschijnlijk niet meer genoeg. India en Slovenië treden zaterdag tegen elkaar aan.

An anonymous reader shares a report: In October, PUBG and Subnautica 2 publisher Krafton announced that it would be undergoing a "complete reorganization" to become an "AI-first" company, planning to invest over 130 billion won ($88 million) in agentic AI infrastructure and deployment beginning in 2026. This week, as it boasts record-breaking quarterly profits, the Korean publisher has followed that strategic shift by launching a voluntary resignation program for its domestic employees, according to Business Korea reporting.

The program, announced internally, offers substantial buyouts for domestic Krafton employees based on their length of employment at the publisher. Severance packages range from 6 months' salary for employees with one year or less of service to 36 months' salary for employees who've worked at Krafton for over 11 years. The voluntary resignation program follows a November 4 earnings call in which Krafton announced a record quarterly profit of $717 million. During the call, Krafton CFO Bae Dong-geun indicated that Krafton had also halted hiring for new positions, telling investors that "excluding organizations developing original intellectual property and AI-related personnel, we have frozen hiring company-wide."
