The best elevated horror makes a metaphor out of its writhing emotional subtext, but writer-director Joe Fria sadly can’t make the leap in this low-budget debut that undoubtedly has issues on its mind: repressed homosexuality, compulsive hookups and generational trauma. For much of the film the horror elements abruptly waylay what is otherwise a fraught two-handed gay drama.
After meeting on the apps, middle-aged English teacher Albert (Bryan Bellomo) and lithe paramedic Devon (John Brodsky) are finally getting cosy at Willow Cabin – the former’s childhood summer getaway, named for a line in Twelfth Night. But secrets fester beneath this ostensibly horny hookup. In Albert’s case, he has a wife and son – and this spot, which once belonged to his uncle, is where he first explored the other side of his sexuality, with his cousin. As for Devon, Albert is the latest in a long line of unfulfilling liaisons with married men, thanks to the emotional damage inflicted by his abusive dad. While both of them are candid to a point, the sporadic phantom eruptions inside the cabin suggest they’ve not got everything out of their systems.

KINSHASA (ANP/BLOOMBERG/RTR) - Het aantal ebolabesmettingen in de Democratische Republiek Congo is opgelopen tot boven de duizend. Zondagavond meldden de plaatselijke autoriteiten 1003 bevestigde gevallen. 254 mensen zijn aan het virus overleden.
Zaterdag meldde de regering nog 956 bevestigde gevallen en 247 doden.
De noordoostelijke provincie Ituri blijft het epicentrum van de virusuitbraak. Meer dan 90 procent van de besmettingen werd daar vastgesteld. Door het grote aantal besmettingen staan de medische faciliteiten onder grote druk.
In buurland Oeganda zijn tot dusver twintig ebolabesmettingen vastgesteld. Zeker twee patiënten zijn door het virus overleden.
ROTTERDAM (ANP) - De vijf partijen die samen het nieuwe stadsbestuur van Rotterdam vormen, verwachten vrijdag hun coalitieakkoord te presenteren. Een woordvoerder van de informateurs bevestigt dat maandag na berichtgeving door het AD en RTV Rijnmond. "De partijen gaan vandaag hun onderhandelingen afronden", zegt hij.
Het nieuwe college wordt gevormd door PRO, VVD, D66, CDA en Volt. Ze begonnen hun onderhandelingen eerder deze maand, nadat een poging om een college met een iets andere samenstelling te vormen was stukgelopen. PRO, VVD en D66 kwamen er niet uit met DENK. Nu is het dus wel gelukt, onder leiding van informateurs Diederik Samsom en Paul van Meenen.
Het nieuwe college telt tien wethouders. PRO is de grootste partij, met elf zetels in de raad. Dat zijn er net zoveel als Leefbaar Rotterdam, dat in de oppositie belandt. D66 en VVD hebben ieder vijf zetels, CDA en Volt dragen er allebei één bij. Dat levert in totaal 23 zetels op, de krapst mogelijke meerderheid in een raad met 45 zetels.
