You can judge a woman by the people she surrounds herself with. For the last few months I’ve been talking to the people Marilyn Monroe surrounded herself with, during her eventful 36 years on earth. Ostensibly and primarily, I was doing this to make a radio documentary, which begins on what would have been her 100th birthday. But I also had a secret secondary motive: I wanted to find out if – maybe in another life – Marilyn and I might have been friends.

The first thing to say about Monroe’s friends is that she had a lot of them. The fact that more than six decades have passed since her death, and it’s still possible to find enough living people to interview, tells you something. This is all the more surprising because MM (as she’s sometimes referred to in fan circles) seems far too much the archetypal, immortal screen goddess to do anything as ordinary as have mates. And while it’s possible to imagine her trailed by a harem of pathetically adoring men – like Tom Ewell’s character in The Seven Year Itch – her sex-symbol image means people find it harder to envisage her having real friendships with women.

GENÈVE (ANP) - De oorlog in het Midden-Oosten heeft ervoor gezorgd dat het aantal vliegtuigpassagiers wereldwijd vorige maand is gedaald. Volgens de internationale luchtvaartbrancheorganisatie IATA vlogen mensen in april 3,4 procent minder dan in dezelfde maand in 2025.

In het Midden-Oosten is het aantal passagiers bijna gehalveerd. "De situatie in de luchtvaartsector blijft zeer onstabiel. De kosten voor kerosine zijn in april meer dan verdubbeld, wat leidt tot hogere ticketprijzen", zegt IATA-topman Willie Walsh in een toelichting.

Sinds het begin van de Iranoorlog drie maanden geleden is de Straat van Hormuz vrijwel afgesloten. Daardoor is vliegtuigbrandstof veel duurder geworden en kampen sommige regio's met een tekort. De Nederlandse luchtvaartmaatschappij KLM verklaarde woensdag nogmaals geen tekort te hebben.

Walsh zegt dat uit vliegschema's blijkt dat het aanbod de komende maanden daalt. Dat wijst er volgens hem op dat luchtvaartmaatschappijen "een balans zoeken tussen hoge brandstofkosten en de zwakkere vraag".

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Students in both classrooms were considering historic events. In Introduction to Sociology, the discussion was about globalization. Three buildings over, a Civil Discourse class was debating 1798 America and the federal government's battle with the states for supremacy. Both courses fall within the broad field of study known as the humanities. But at the University of Florida, the class on early America is part of a growing and well-funded effort to counter what the state considers "woke" liberal indoctrination, while the sociology class is considered a prime example of the problem.

Nine GOP-led states have created 14 civics centers since 2017, when the first one was established in Arizona, focusing on topics such as America's founding and Western civilization. In Ohio, there are centers at five public universities, and in Utah, state law now mandates that all general education classes required for graduation at Utah State University be crafted by the new Center for Civic Excellence. The new rules also mandate that humanities courses required for graduation teach texts predominantly from Western civilization. Sasha Morel, who declared a Hamilton major this year, described Hamilton as offering "a curriculum of exclusion." The bias is not in how any one subject is taught, he said, but in the fact that "certain alternative ways of thinking are overshadowed." "Professors have so much room to talk about whatever they want," said Morel, who describes himself as politically progressive. "They are experts. That's awesome. But ... a lot of them are experts in a very narrow field or very conservative field of philosophy."
