Agreement shows the latest impact of AI boom as two more chipmakers join $1tn club

Employees at Samsung Electronics’s memory chip division are to receive bonuses averaging about £310,000 each through a landmark profit-sharing agreement, as the AI boom drives up chipmakers’ profits.

Fears of a strike at Samsung were averted on Wednesday after two unions for the world’s largest memory chipmaker said that 74% of the 62,616 workers who cast their votes had backed the deal.

Five villagers stuck in a flooded cave in central Laos for more than a week have been found alive, rescuers said on Wednesday, but two others are missing.

The villagers entered the cave in Xaisomboun province on 19 May, but heavy rain triggered flash flooding that blocked the exit and trapped seven people, according to Lao and Thai rescue teams involved in the operation.

Onderzoekers uit Canada en de Verenigde Staten vroegen ruim vijfhonderd volwassenen in een vaste relatie naar hun meest recente seksuele fantasieën, zowel tijdens masturbatie als tijdens seks met hun partner. Wat blijkt? Onze hersenen schakelen moeiteloos tussen lust, intimiteit en escapisme, afhankelijk van de setting.

Seksuele fantasieën draaien om gevoel

Waar masturbatiefantasieën vaker draaien om expliciete spanning, lichamelijk verlangen en onbekenden, blijken fantasieën tijdens partnerseks juist opvallend vaak te gaan over verbondenheid, affectie en emotionele intimiteit. De onderzoekers hebben het over gevoelens van warmte, nabijheid en emotionele connectie.

En dat verraste zelfs de wetenschappers zelf. Seksuele fantasieën, zeker die van mannen, worden namelijk vaak gezien als puur erotisch en visueel. Maar veel deelnemers beschreven juist fantasieën waarin zorgzaamheid, liefde en emotionele veiligheid centraal stonden.

Tegelijkertijd is fantaseren over iemand anders ontzettend normaal. Tijdens masturbatie dacht ruim de helft van de deelnemers aan iemand buiten de relatie. Maar ook tijdens partnerseks bleek dat percentage opvallend hoog: bijna vier op de tien mensen fantaseerde op dat moment over iemand anders dan hun partner.

Goed nieuws: fantaseren over een ander hoeft géén alarmbel te zijn

Misschien nog wel het meest geruststellende resultaat uit het onderzoek: fantaseren over iemand anders bleek nauwelijks samen te hangen met relatieproblemen. Mensen die dit deden, waren niet per se ongelukkiger in hun relatie. Wel is het zo dat deelnemers met een hogere seksuele tevredenheid vaker fantaseerden over hun eigen partner.

Volgens de onderzoekers laat het onderzoek vooral zien dat seksualiteit veel flexibeler is dan we vaak denken. Onze verlangens veranderen afhankelijk van context, situatie en emotionele behoefte. Seksuele fantasieën zijn dus niet per definitie een verborgen boodschap over wat er misgaat in een relatie, soms zijn het simpelweg gedachten die passen bij het moment.

Dus de volgende keer dat je gedachten tijdens de seks even afdwalen? Grote kans dat je brein gewoon precies doet wat heel veel anderen ook doen.
