Dementie kostte de Nederlandse samenleving het afgelopen jaar bijna 32 miljard euro aan zorgkosten en maatschappelijke kosten. Dit blijkt uit nieuw onderzoek van de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam en Alzheimer Nederland, aldus De Telegraaf. De onderzoekers gaan ervan uit dat deze kosten de komende jaren verder oplopen.

Alleen al de directe zorgkosten aan dementie bedragen zo'n 16 miljard euro, bijna 10 procent van alle zorguitgaven.

Maar de kostenimpact van dementie beperkt zich niet tot patiënten en zorgverleners; het raakt ook gezinnen, werkgevers, gemeenten en vrijwilligersorganisaties. Voor het eerst hebben onderzoekers deze indirecte kosten ook meegenomen. Ze gebruikten daarvoor gegevens van onder meer Vektis, het CBS, Dementie in Kaart en het Zorginstituut.

Nederland telt dit jaar naar schatting 320.000 mensen met dementie. Het grootste deel woont nog thuis. Rondom die groep draait een omvangrijk netwerk van partners, kinderen en andere naasten die dagelijks ondersteuning bieden. Juist die informele zorg blijkt economisch van enorme betekenis.

Ex-Prins Andrew, hertog van York, ligt opnieuw onder vuur na onthullingen dat hij vrouwen zou hebben aangesproken met een expliciete, seksueel getinte “koninklijke” opmerking, zo blijkt uit een recent heruitgegeven biografie over de Britse royals.

Wat er is onthuld

Volgens de Britse royal-biograaf Andrew Lownie sprak Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor vrouwen aan met de vraag “hoe het voelt om de koninklijke penis tegen je dij te hebben”, een zin die in zijn boek als typische openingszin van de prins wordt beschreven. Lownie’s boek, “The Rise and Fall of the House of York”, is recent opnieuw uitgegeven met tientallen nieuwe pagina’s over de gevallen prins, die al jaren in opspraak is vanwege beschuldigingen van seksueel grensoverschrijdend gedrag en zijn connecties met Jeffrey Epstein.

Context rond Andrew

Het leven van Andrew is al langer doorspekt met schandalen: de Britse politie onderzoekt zijn gedrag in functie, terwijl voormalige medewerkers en insiders spreken over een man met een “extreem gevoel van superioriteit” die dacht overal mee weg te komen. In interviews schetst Lownie een beeld van een seksverslaafde man met grote problemen in de omgang met vrouwen, over wie “ontelbare verhalen” circuleren over prostituees, seksuele overtredingen en ongepaste avances tegen jonge vrouwelijke medewerkers in en rond het paleis.

De nieuwe passages in Lownie’s boek krijgen veel aandacht in Britse media, mede omdat zij aansluiten bij eerdere verhalen over Andrew’s grensoverschrijdende gedrag op bals en officiële evenementen. Zo zou hij jurken van vrouwen hebben losgeritst en vrouwelijke medewerkers hebben betast, terwijl hij expliciet sprak over zijn wens om zijn penis tegen hen aan te wrijven, wat volgens de biograaf paste in een patroon van vernedering en intimidatie.

Breder debat over macht en gedrag

De onthullingen voeden opnieuw het debat over hoe leden van koningshuizen omgaan met macht, verantwoordelijkheid en #MeToo-achtige beschuldigingen. Voor het Britse hof is het een nieuwe dreun in het streven om afstand te nemen van Andrew, die formeel wel titels behield maar al jaren geen publieke functies meer vervult.

BRASILIA (ANP/AFP) - De ontbossing in het Braziliaanse Amazonegebied is vorig jaar gedaald tot het laagste niveau sinds 2019, volgens een rapport van monitor MapBiomas dat woensdag is gepubliceerd. Het grootste land van Zuid-Amerika verloor vorig jaar 985.000 hectare aan inheemse vegetatie, een daling van 20,6 procent ten opzichte van 2024, aldus MapBiomas.

Het cijfer omvat overigens niet de bossen die door branden verloren zijn gegaan. Na een recordseizoen met veel bosbranden in 2024 bleef het land vorig jaar relatief gespaard van grote branden.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, die in de verkiezingen van oktober een vierde ambtstermijn hoopt te winnen, heeft de strijd tegen ontbossing tot een speerpunt van zijn regering gemaakt. Na vier jaar van grootschalige houtkap onder zijn uiterst rechtse voorganger Jair Bolsonaro, heeft Lula beloofd de illegale ontbossing tegen 2030 volledig uit te roeien.

Het behoud van bosbedekking is essentieel in de strijd tegen klimaatverandering, omdat bomen fungeren als natuurlijke koolstofopslag.

Ook vandaag is het zonnig weer, maar af en toe komen er ook wat wolkenvelden voorbij. De wind komt uit het noorden tot noordoosten en die heeft koelere lucht aangevoerd. Het wordt vanmiddag landinwaarts 24 tot 27 graden, maar dicht bij zee wordt het maar 21 tot 24 graden.

The regulation was widely mocked by social-media jokesters and Silicon Valley billionaires alike. This, people said, was Brussels at its worst: bureaucrats micromanaging, treating citizens like children who couldn’t be trusted to recycle a cap.

What went almost entirely unreported was the evidence behind it. Plastic bottle caps have been identified, across decades of coastal cleanup data, as among the top items found littering European beaches. Small, light and made from a different plastic than the bottle itself, the caps float independently once separated, travelling far longer distances than the bottles they came from. They are far more likely to be swallowed by seabirds, fish and marine turtles who mistake them for food.

It is a bright, chilly spring morning in Madrid, and the Museo del Prado doesn’t open to the public for another hour. Without the crowds, the museum is amorphous and eerily silent. A pale light pools in the corners and casts long shadows around the paintings, as if the figures inside them have slipped quietly into the room. It is here that I meet the French-Moroccan writer Leïla Slimani, who has spent the past two weeks using the space as inspiration for her work.

With quick strides, Slimani leads us to a basement gallery housing some of her favourite works: Francisco Goya’s dark and haunting Black Paintings, created later in life when the Spanish artist had adopted a particularly bleak outlook on humanity. Among them are Saturn Devouring His Son, a violent depiction of the god biting into his own child; The Fates, with its three ominous figures spinning the thread of life; and Witches’ Sabbath (The Great He-Goat), in which the devil appears as a goat presiding over a coven.

All smoke, shady dames and black and white cinematography, Marvel’s latest Spidey offering is fast, witty and confident

As is increasingly, wearyingly, the case as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand/bloat/chase the dollar in an ever-more unseemly and less rewarding manner – delete according to taste – Prime Video’s new series, Spider-Noir, requires you to set aside some lore while retaining other bits. Thus I should point out that the arachno-inflected human being brought to you here is played by Nicolas Cage but is not the spider character that he played in 2018’s Spider-man: Into the Spiderverse, although he sounds a lot alike. That one was called Peter Parker, as is traditional. This one’s called Ben Reilly. Why you would still cast one of the most divisively idiosyncratic performers in modern cinematic history – who can no more be dissociated from any of his previous parts by the average human brain than the concept of sourness can be uncoupled from a lemon, sweetness from honey, or Nigel Farage’s face from that of a melting frog’s – is beyond me, but I guess … that’s Hollywood?

As the title suggests, Spider-Noir has been conceived as a homage to the hard-boiled films and fictions of the 1940s. The whole thing was filmed in black and white and digitally colourised thereafter, so that viewers can choose in which form they want to watch it. I look forward to online wars breaking out over this issue, upon which I shall remain Switzerland. Except to say that the decision to colourise a noir homage was a craven one in the first place – never give the people what they want! – and the decision to watch such a version is worse.
