Riot police in Turkey have fired teargas and water cannon to break up a rally called by ousted opposition leader Özgür Özel, days after a court dismissed him from office.

The protest in Izmir on Tuesday came two days after riot police battered their way into the main opposition CHP’s headquarters in the capital, Ankara, firing teargas and beating party members before throwing them out, Özel told AFP on Sunday.

Former F1 team boss and technical chief Ross Brawn has made a motorsport comeback by joining the Board of Directors at MotoGP outfit Pramac Racing.

A community claiming to represent the interests of MySQL users and developers has launched the OurSQL Foundation, with the aim of presenting a united front to Oracle, which owns the intellectual property behind the popular open source database. The new nonprofit says it will help the MySQL community access knowledge and provide feedback on future development in a transparent and consistent way. The community organization also claims it will support the growth and use of MySQL as an open source database and collaborate with all players in the market, including Oracle, to see it succeed with the next generation of developers and applications. In February, the group behind the launch invited Oracle to take part in plans to create an independent foundation to guide development of MySQL. The move was prompted by concerns about MySQL's declining popularity and market share relative to PostgreSQL Under Oracle's management, MySQL's development lacks transparency and largely takes place behind closed doors through private code drops, "with limited visibility into the roadmap or decision-making," the group said in an open letter. In March, Oracle – which acquired the open source RDBMS with the Sun Microsystems buyout in 2009 – put forward a new approach to engaging developers and promised features supporting vector search. Big Red published a blog post that aimed to assure the community that "MySQL is fundamental to our data strategy." Peter Zaitsev, co-founder of open source consultancy Percona, one of the organizations behind the OurSQL Foundation, said Oracle had been signaling it was more open to having a conversation about the future of the database. "We know that many members of this foundation are having discussions with Oracle, contributing code, and so on," he said. "Also, this is not an anti-Oracle effort. On the contrary, we have invited Oracle to participate as a member, and I think that [if it joins] it would be a signal that they do really care about the MySQL community." The Register has asked Oracle whether it plans to take part in the foundation. "This foundation will provide a platform to promote and support MySQL as a database, fostering collaboration across everyone looking to contribute to the broad MySQL ecosystem," said Vadim Tkachenko, also a Percona co-founder who is president of the foundation. "It will pool resources and provide guidance around where MySQL fits into the technology landscape today, something that has been missing over the past few years. By bringing the community together under the banner of an independent Foundation, we can demonstrate that MySQL has a valid and vibrant future ahead of it. The OurSQL Foundation will be a neutral organization that will support MySQL as a technology, helping the community as a whole to grow and succeed in parallel with Oracle's renewed focus on MySQL community development." Other companies represented on the board include PlanetScale, PingCAP, VillageSQL, and Alibaba. Jean-François Gagné, a MySQL expert and independent consultant, is also on the founding board. ®

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Blue Origin have revealed what went wrong on the third flight of New Glenn and it looks like a cryogenic leak is our culprit. According to Blue Origin: "Prior to our second GS2 burn, we experienced an off-nominal thermal condition, and, as a result, one of the BE-3U engines didn't achieve full thrust to reach our target orbit." The FAA's explanation was a little more detailed: "The final mishap report identified the direct cause of the mishap as a cryogenic leak that froze a hydraulic line and led to a thrust anomaly during the second stage engine burn." The April 19 launch of the NG-3 mission started well. The first stage firing went well, and the booster made a successful landing on Blue Origin's floating landing platform, Jacklyn. However, during the second burn of the second stage (dubbed GS2), things went awry. One of the two BE-3U engines failed to achieve full thrust, leaving the payload, AST SpaceMobile's BlueBird 7 satellite, in a lower-than-planned orbit. AST SpaceMobile later said the spacecraft would be deorbited. All told, nine corrective actions were identified to prevent a repeat of the problem, and Blue Origin says all have been implemented ahead of the next New Glenn launch. The FAA said it will verify those changes before the rocket flies again. It is, however, not immediately clear what payload the company will be launching. Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp showed off a video of the next vehicle being lifted onto the Transporter Erector, but gave no further details. Like SpaceX, which will be launching the next batch of AST SpaceMobile BlueBird satellites, Blue Origin has several targets to hit. It is expected to launch an uncrewed lunar lander this year and deliver NASA's off-again-on-again VIPER mission to the lunar surface in late 2027. NASA boss Jared Isaacman said in recent weeks that SpaceX and Blue Origin had told the agency both would have vehicles "to meet our needs" for a late 2027 rendezvous, docking, and capability test tied to Artemis III. Approval from the FAA removes one distraction for the company. However, time is running out for Blue Origin to accomplish its goals before the end of next year. ®
