DEN HAAG (ANP) - Ook in andere regio's van Nederland stopt Defensie tijdelijk met oefeningen met explosieven, open vuur en pyrotechniek. Dat heeft staatssecretaris Derk Boswijk van Defensie aangekondigd op sociale media. De reden is dat het natuurbrandrisico in steeds meer delen van het land wordt verhoogd naar fase 2. In die regio's worden de oefeningen tijdelijk opgeschort.

In Gelderland, Utrecht en Zuid-Limburg is het sinds dinsdagochtend fase 2. Die staat van alertheid wordt door de brandweer afgekondigd als het al langere tijd droog is in de natuur. Dat vergroot het risico op branden, die zich ook nog eens snel en onvoorspelbaar kunnen ontwikkelen, zeker bij harde wind. Terreineigenaren, natuurbeheerders en hulpdiensten zijn tijdens fase 2 extra alert.

Eerder kondigde de landmacht al aan te stoppen met oefenen op terreinen in Gelderland. Volgens een woordvoerder van het ministerie van Defensie geldt de tijdelijke stop voor alle onderdelen van het leger.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM) waarschuwt voor hoge ozonconcentraties. De hoogste concentraties lijken zich te ontwikkelen in een band van Leiden naar Hilversum, Utrecht en Flevoland tot aan Zwolle. Door ozon kan smog ontstaan, wat slecht is voor de luchtkwaliteit. Mensen die er gevoelig voor zijn, zoals astmapatiënten, kunnen daar last van hebben. Het RIVM adviseert hun om binnen te blijven en zware fysieke inspanning te beperken. Dit advies geldt vooral in de namiddag en het begin van de avond.

Smog door ozon kan leiden tot hoesten en kortademigheid. Ook kunnen mensen die er gevoelig voor zijn geïrriteerde ogen, neus en keel krijgen. Smog door ozon ontstaat door luchtvervuiling op zonnige dagen als er weinig wind staat. Vervuilende stoffen vormen ozon door zonlicht. De kans op smog verdwijnt woensdag.

Het RIVM geeft een waarschuwing af als er meer dan 180 microgram ozon per kubieke meter in de lucht zit. De luchtkwaliteit is dan "slecht" volgens de Nederlandse Luchtkwaliteitsindex.

Scientists have created a wearable ultrasound patch that can continuously monitor babies in the womb, with the hope that such devices could aid the early detection of complications during pregnancy.

The team behind the work say ultrasound-based techniques in place now have drawbacks: continuous monitoring of the baby’s heart rate and contractions of the womb using current methods leads to a high rate of false alarms, while the use of more conventional handheld devices for imaging is limited to a small number of scans during pregnancy, and must be carried out by a skilled operator.
