Tokyo di notte può diventare improvvisamente silenziosa.

Non siamo lontani da Ueno, eppure qui la strada è quasi vuota.
Solo un piccolo locale di tonkatsu illuminato, una finestra aperta al piano rialzato e l’odore forte dell’olio caldo che esce nella notte.

Un uomo si ferma davanti all’ingresso.
Forse sta pensando se entrare oppure no.
Hīrekatsu? Rosukatsu?

Nel frattempo il locale continua a fare quello che ha sempre fatto: friggere tonkatsu per chi decide di fermarsi.

夜の東京は急に静かになることがある。

上野からそれほど遠くないのに、この通りには人がほとんどいない。
明かりがついた小さなとんかつ屋。
二階の窓は少し開いていて、揚げ物の匂いが夜の道路に流れている。

一人の男が店の前で立ち止まる。
入るか、やめるか。
ヒレカツか、ロースカツか。

その間も店はいつも通り、とんかつを揚げ続けている。

Tokyo at night can suddenly become quiet.

We are not far from Ueno, yet this street is almost empty.
Only a small tonkatsu restaurant glowing in the dark, an open upstairs window and the heavy smell of frying oil spreading through the night air.

A man stops in front of the entrance.
Maybe he is wondering whether to go in or not.
Hirekatsu? Rosukatsu?

Meanwhile the restaurant keeps doing what it has probably always done: frying tonkatsu for whoever decides to stop by.

Weather update: it’s raining right now in Montreal, apparently. It may mean a delay in the race start or it could clear up and/or avoid the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. Any news on start times as we get it!

Highest temperatures of 2026 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland as Kew Gardens in London reaches 32.3C

England, Wales and Northern Ireland recorded their highest temperatures of 2026 on Sunday, which was also the UK’s hottest May day for at least 79 years.

Kew Gardens in west London recorded 32.3C (90.1F), Cardiff 27.4C and Armagh 23.4C.

Announcement comes after Alan Milburn says Britain has neglected generation of young people struggling to access work and training opportunities

Ministers are expanding youth work experience and training schemes, after Alan Milburn warned Britain is spending £25 keeping young people on benefits for every £1 spent helping them into work.

Pat McFadden, the work and pensions secretary will announce plans for 300,000 extra work experience placements over the next three years as Labour attempts to tackle what the minister described as a “quiet crisis” in youth employment.

Twenty minutes into her time at the 2026 French Open, Emma Raducanu already appeared to be on her way out. Trailing 0-4, 30-40 on her serve, the games falling from her at warp speed, this was the moment for Raducanu to fight, to claw her way back into the first set, at least try to keep herself in contention. She responded by shanking a backhand, which flew high into the sky before bouncing far out.

This point epitomised a miserable day on court for Emma Raducanu, whose last-ditch fight was not enough to turn the match around as she lost 6-0, 7-6 (4) at Roland Garros, beaten by the unseeded Argentinian, Solana Sierra.

Wij kennen Michael Peter Balzary natuurlijk allemaal als manische bassist van de Red Hot Chili Peppers, maar afgelopen jaren werkte hij aan een jazz-album, Honora, vernoemd naar zijn overgrootmoeder.

Daarop speelt Flea niet alleen basgitaar, maar ook trompet en op dit nummer zelfs de flumpet, een kruising tussen een trompet en een vleugelhoorn. Dat instrument werd in 1989 ontworpen voor jazztrompettist Art Farmer.
