An emotional Marta Kostyuk described her first-round win at the French Open as one of the most difficult matches of her life as she revealed that she had taken to the court hours after a Russian missile landed close to her parents’ house in Ukraine.
Kostyuk, the 15th seed in Paris, became one of the first players to win a match at the tournament this year as the 23-year-old registered a 6-2, 6-3 win over Oksana Selekhmeteva. Kostyuk hails from Kyiv, where she periodically returns to train between tournaments.

A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle near a railway track as a passenger train travelled through the south-western Pakistani city of Quetta, killing at least 23 people and wounding more than 70 others, officials have said.
The force of the explosion on Sunday caused two of the train cars to overturn and catch fire, sending thick black smoke into the air, according to footage shared online.

PARIJS (ANP) - Tennisser Alexander Zverev is op overtuigende wijze begonnen aan Roland Garros. De als tweede geplaatste Duitser rekende in drie sets af met de Fransman Benjamin Bonzi, de nummer 95 van de wereld: 6-3 6-4 6-2.
De 29-jarige Zverev wacht nog op zijn eerste grandslamtitel. In 2024 verloor hij op Roland Garros de finale van Carlos Alcaraz. De geblesseerde Spanjaard is er nu niet bij. Zverev bereikte daarnaast in Parijs drie keer de halve finale en drie keer de kwartfinale.
In de tweede ronde speelt Zverev tegen de Tsjech Tomas Machac, die in drie sets afrekende met de Belg Zizou Bergs.
De gevaren van videogames blijven terugkomen in het maatschappelijke debat. Zo groeiden miljoenen jongeren dankzij The Sims op met het idee dat ze een huis konden bezitten. Vooral millennials en gen Z’ers kampen dagelijks met de mentale gevolgen van het spel.
“Vroeger als kind heb ik úren besteed aan het bouwen van mijn eigen vrijstaande huis”, aldus de 27-jarige Michelle. “Ik had een ruime tuin met zwembad. Het liet me dromen over de toekomst. Het is echt bizar hoe we als generatie zijn verpest door spellen als The Sims.” Michelle moest recent haar huurappartement uit en verblijft momenteel in de poolhouse van een vriendin met teringrijke ouders.
Soms heeft Michelle donkere gedachten over het weghalen van het trappetje, geeft ze toe. “Maar ik wil mijn intrusieve gedachten door The Sims niet laten winnen. Ik moet hoop houden, maar het is verschrikkelijk moeilijk soms.”
