So, today is the day. No more procrastination, an end to doubt and vacillation. The single remaining relegation spot is by a margin the most significant position to be decided, and the crux of it is this: West Ham will go down if they don’t beat Leeds at home. They will also go down if Tottenham beat Everton at home, or if Spurs draw and West Ham win by fewer than 12 (twelve) goals. (The biggest margin of victory in the history of the Premier League is 9-0; in the history of the entire Football League there have been four victories by a margin big enough to save West Ham should Spurs win today, the most recent 80 years ago).

Meanwhile, though we know that Arsenal will finish first, Manchester City second and Manchester United third, no other position in the entire league is already determined. Liverpool need a point to seal a Champions League place, but if they beat Brentford at home and fourth-placed Aston Villa lose at Manchester City they would go to fourth, Villa drop to fifth and, thanks to Villa’s Europa League victory, a sixth Champions League spot will open up.

The athlete on the joy of receiving her first bike, her lonely teenage years, and a life-changing phone call

Born in Bedfordshire in 1980, cyclist Victoria Pendleton is one of Britain’s most decorated athletes. As well as winning nine world championship golds, she won the gold medal in the sprint at the 2008 Olympics and the gold medal in the keirin (a sprint following a speed-controlled start), as well as a silver medal in the sprint in the 2012 Olympics. She retired from cycling in 2012 and is now a jockey. Her new book, The Fear Opportunity, is published on 21 May.

This was taken when cycling was a hobby and nothing more. My family were on holiday in the south of France, not far from Saint-Tropez. That was my first solo racing bike – it was secondhand and Dad got it custom sprayed. My twin, Alex, had one, too. We were very proud of them.

When the Democratic National Committee finally released its autopsy on the 2024 election disaster, not even the DNC chair could defend it. “I don’t endorse what’s in this report,” Ken Martin conceded as the autopsy went public on Thursday. After several months of withholding the autopsy on the grounds of not wanting it to be a distraction, Martin fessed up at last: “When I received the report late last year, it wasn’t ready for primetime. Not even close. And because no source material was provided, fixing it would have meant starting over, from the beginning.”

In response, a former Obama speechwriter, Jon Favreau, summed up eight stages of Martin’s tortuous process that has spanned more than a year: “Promise to release autopsy; put incompetent friend in charge; incompetent friend produces incoherent product; announce you’re not releasing the autopsy; lie about why; gaslight people who ask, saying they’re the problem; face internal revolt; release autopsy.”

At least four people died and dozens of others were injured in the attack

Russia used its powerful hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile for a third time in Ukraine as part of a massive attack on Kyiv and its surrounding region that killed at least four people and injured dozens.

Russia hit the city of Bila Tserkva in the Kyiv region with the missile, Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. He described a Russian assault that hit a water supply facility, burned down a market, damaged dozens of residential buildings and several schools, as well as the Oreshnik missile strike.

Welkom terug bij het tweejaarlijkse GeenStijl-topic waarin we uitleggen hoe het eigenlijk staat met de islamisering van Nederland. En wat blijkt? Die zet nog steeds door. Niet met een knal, maar wel met een wimper. In het jaar des heeren 2024 was het percentage moslims, dat volgens de kenners amper stijgt, volgens het CBS namelijk gegroeid tot maar liefst 7%. Dat hebben wij u niet gemeld in 2025, omdat het CBS het toen ook niet meldde. Het is pas op 13 maart van dit jaar aangepast op de website, en gemeld in een klein erratumpje dat wij toevallig tegenkwamen toen we een beetje in de cijfers naar aanleiding van het Vlaamse gepruts over de manosphere zaten te zoeken.   

Maar! Nou zijn wij er niet vies van om het CBS van van alles en nog wat te beschuldigen, toch vermoeden we hier geen opzet om een schokkend cijfer weg te moffelen. Ten eerste gaat het dus om een resultaat van een aanpassing van de weging van enquêteresultaten. Het is juist goed dat dat gebeurt en fijn dat er nu betere cijfers beschikbaar zijn. Ten tweede was de stijging niet zo schokkend, en bovendien op het (vermoedelijke) moment van de ontdekking alweer tenietgedaan, want het percentage daalde voor 2025 weer naar van 7 naar 6 procent.

Dat komt waarschijnlijk niet omdat na het verschijnen van het tweede boek van Lale Gül Nederlandse moslims zich massaal van hun geloof hebben gekeerd, maar zal eerder het gevolg zijn van een net andere samenstelling van de ondervraagde groep. Het gaat om cijfers uit de enquête Sociale samenhang en welzijn onder zo'n 7500 mensen. Dat is een flinke steekproef, maar zoals uit onderstaande tabel (bron, op 13 maart door het CBS gepubliceerd met een nieuwsbericht over Limburgers) blijkt, kunnen de uitkomsten voor kleinere subgroepen zeker een beetje schommelen. Vandaar dat wij "was in 2024 eventjes" in de kop tussen aanhalingstekens hebben gezet. 

Want wie door zijn oogharen naar de tabel kijkt ziet wel degelijk dat het percentage moslims in Nederland gestaag blijft groeien. Onder mannen (die gemiddeld jonger zijn dan vrouwen) is het percentage moslims al wel 7%, dus die 6 uit 2025 zit vermoedelijk dichter bij de 7 dan bij de 5 in de buurt. Onder 15- tot 18-jarigen is het percentage nu gestegen tot 15%, meer dan het dubbele daarvan. Zoals we twee jaar geleden ook al schreven: 

Wie nuchter naar de cijfers kijkt, ziet dat we morgen heus niet allemaal Ali heten, of Mohammed, maar doen alsof er in Nederland geen enkele sprake is van groei van de islam, is absurd. Het doet zelfs, mogen wij dat zeggen ja dat mogen wij zeggen, een beetje denken aan mensen die doen alsof de aarde niet opwarmt. Nou ja. En nu weer terug naar de onderbuik.

PARIJS (ANP/AFP) - Tennisster Marta Kostjoek heeft als eerste speelster de tweede ronde op Roland Garros bereikt. Voor de Oekraïense, die de in Rusland geboren Spaanse Oksana Selechmeteva met 6-2 6-3 versloeg, was het een zege die gepaard ging met veel emoties.

In haar toespraak na de wedstrijd, waarin ze een paar tranen liet, verklaarde de uit Kiev afkomstige Kostjoek dat er eerder die dag een raket was neergekomen "op 100 meter van het huis van mijn ouders", iets meer dan vier jaar na het begin van het Russische offensief in Oekraïne.

"Ik ben natuurlijk heel blij dat ik de tweede ronde heb bereikt, maar al mijn gedachten en mijn hart waren vandaag bij het Oekraïense volk", zei Kostjoek, die Selechmeteva na afloop niet de hand wilde schudden. "Ik ben vandaag ontzettend trots op mezelf. Ik denk dat het een van de zwaarste wedstrijden van mijn leven was."
