DEN HAAG (ANP) - Op de vraag of op dit moment sprake is van een asielcrisis, kan Rob Jetten bevestigend antwoorden. "Ik denk ook dat het een crisis is. Want als je 's avonds om half elf nog aan de telefoon hangt om te kijken of je mensen nog ergens in een sporthal kan laten slapen, dan is dat geen normale situatie", aldus de premier bij zijn wekelijkse persconferentie.

Deze week heeft Jetten naar eigen zeggen hierover contact gehad met 25 gemeenten. Het aanmeldcentrum in Ter Apel voelde zich de afgelopen dagen genoodzaakt om mensen te weigeren. Telkens werden op het laatste moment bedden geregeld voor asielzoekers die het terrein niet op mochten.

UTRECHT (ANP) - Het Openbaar Ministerie heeft vrijdag tien maanden celstraf geëist tegen twee mannen uit IJsselstein voor hun rol in het bestoken van agenten met vuurwerk. Dat gebeurde begin mei tijdens rellen over de komst van een asielzoekerscentrum in de Utrechtse plaats. Voor de jongste verdachte eiste het OM dat vier van de tien maanden voorwaardelijk zouden worden opgelegd.

Agenten werden in de nacht van 2 op 3 mei beschoten met een Romeinse kaars met 380 shots. "Een op hol geslagen machinegeweer", aldus de officier. Een agent raakte hierdoor gewond, omdat er vuurwerk bij zijn hoofd ontplofte.

Verdachte Michel van D. (41) zegt dat hij het vuurwerk had meegenomen. Volgens het OM heeft hij verdachte Ralph H. (20) vervolgens "opgenaaid" om het af te steken. H. heeft bekend dat hij dit heeft gedaan en ermee op de politie heeft geschoten.

De verdachten kwamen niet om vreedzaam te demonstreren, zei de officier van justitie. "Ze kwamen om te verzieken, te vernielen en anderen geweld aan te doen."

HILVERSUM (ANP) - Journalist Gijs Sanders en zijn cameraman zijn weer in Nederland. Volgens het journalistieke platform De Marker gaat het "naar omstandigheden goed met hen". De twee deden verslag van de Global Sumud Flotilla, maar werden door Israël op internationale wateren opgepakt. Donderdag vlogen ze naar Turkije, voordat ze vrijdag weer naar Nederland gingen.

"Gijs en onze cameraman zijn weer thuis! Ons team heeft ze zojuist op Schiphol ontvangen", deelt het BNNVARA-programma op Instagram. "Naar omstandigheden gaat het goed met hen. In Istanbul zijn alle opvarenden onder andere door een medische check gegaan. Onze eerste zorg gaat nu uit naar de nazorg voor onze journalisten." In een begeleidend filmpje is te zien hoe Sanders bij aankomst op de luchthaven lachend wordt omhelsd.

BNNVARA liet eerder op de dag aan het ANP weten dat er psychologische hulp klaarstaat voor Sanders en zijn cameraman. De documentaire die Sanders voor De Marker maakt, wordt later gepubliceerd op het YouTubekanaal van het platform.

Een woordvoerder van de Nederlandse delegatie van de Global Sumud Flotilla laat weten dat de andere vier Nederlandse deelnemers aan het einde van de middag aankomen op Schiphol. De journalist en cameraman "hebben ervoor gekozen om een eerdere vlucht te nemen", aldus de woordvoerder, die daar eerder niet van op de hoogte was.

US social media firms acting on orders from Middle East kingdom accused of being ‘instruments of repression’

Major US social media companies including Meta’s Facebook and Instagram platforms have blocked the accounts of Saudi Arabian dissidents so they are no longer visible inside the kingdom, following orders by Saudi authorities.

Those affected include Abdullah Alaoudh, a US-based activist and vocal critic of Saudi human rights violations, and Omar Abdulaziz, a Canada and UK-based activist who worked closely with Jamal Khashoggi before the journalist’s murder by Saudi agents in 2018.

Forgive me if I’m not congratulating officers for investigating Andrew now – instead of, say, many years ago when they were with him in Jeffrey Epstein’s house

How noble that Thames Valley police has let it be known that its misconduct-in-public-office investigation into Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is also considering potential offences including corruption and sexual misconduct. On Friday, it made a public appeal for potential victims and witnesses to come forward.

Obviously, the best time for the police to have started quietly asking questions was shortly after Metropolitan police officers – Andrew’s close protection detail – ferried him back from a London nightclub to a house with some other friends in their 40s, and one young-looking 17-year-old girl. Then waited outside till he decided it was time to come home. But as the saying goes: the second-best time is now. No wait, the second-best time was probably when Andrew paid a reported £12m to settle out of court with Virginia Giuffre, despite maintaining he had no recollection of meeting her. (He denies any wrongdoing.) Ach no, the second-best time was when leaked emails suggest the former prince passed his Met close protection officer Giuffre’s birthdate and US social security number and asked him to carry out checks on her. Sorry, wrong again, the second-best time was a full 12 years ago, when Giuffre alleged that she was sex trafficked to and assaulted by Andrew on that night mentioned above, as well as on two other occasions.
