De controversiële uitspraken van Gidi Markuszower over Palestijnen en asielzoekers heeft veel stof doen opwaaien. Zo pleitte hij voor maximaal geweld tegen deze groepen en moedigde hij de anti-azc protesten in Loosdrecht aan. Zelfs voor veel extreemrechtse stemmers gaan deze uitspraken te ver, waardoor er ruimte op de rechterflank ligt voor een wat redelijker alternatief: Geert Wilders. Maar wie is deze flamboyante Limburger eigenlijk?
‘Voordat hij het alternatief voor Markuszower werd, zat Wilders bij de VVD. Daar is hij toen afgesplitst. Sindsdien hebben we amper iets van hem gehoord, maar dat betekent niet dat hij stil heeft gezeten. Zo heeft hij bijvoorbeeld ruim twintig jaar in de Tweede Kamer gezeten en was hij een tijdje fractievoorzitter van de grootste partij van Nederland. Wie goed gaat graven ziet dat hij ooit in het nieuws was omdat hij een anti-islamfilm uitbracht en maar weinig mensen weten dat hij zelfs veroordeeld is voor groepsbelediging om een ‘minder Marokkanen’-uitspraak’, duidt Wouter de Winther het enigma Geert Wilders.
Verder won Geert Wilders de ‘Oriana Fallaci-prijs’ voor zijn inzet voor vrijheid van meningsuiting in 2009, terwijl Markuszower een jaar eerder werd opgepakt voor een iets letterlijkere interpretatie van iets verdedigen: wapenbezit. Het tekent een wezenlijk verschil tussen de huidige leider van De Nederlandse Alliantie en zijn frisse uitdager op rechts.
Wilders lijkt beter te begrijpen dat je pas echt succesvol polariseert als je jezelf laat klinken alsof jij juist de redelijke volwassene bent die het volk begrijpt. Kortom, Wilders weet extremisme beter te doseren: precies genoeg om kijkers te mobiliseren, maar net niet genoeg om de indruk te wekken dat hij de teugels volledig kwijt is. Daar is Markuszower vooralsnog niet in geslaagd.

For 39-year-old Lester Kovaks, life has been a living hell ever since his sophomore year of high school, when people started saying that he drilled a hole into the globe in his homeroom classroom and then had sex with the globe. “People called me names like ‘Globe Fucker’ and ‘The Geography Pervert’ and it made every moment of my life absolute agony,” says Kovaks, who was forced to relocate to a different state with his family just to avoid the constant harassment from the people in town who kept accusing him of fucking the globe. “But you know something? I did fuck the globe. It was the right thing to do, and I liked doing it, and I’m proud that I fucked the globe.”
Absolutely incredible. It’s always heartwarming when someone owns who they are and feels comfortable in their own skin!
These days, Lester still encounters people who accuse him of fucking the globe and give him a hard time about it, but his outlook on the situation has completely changed.
“I used to say, ‘Oh, you think I fucked the globe just because everyone in homeroom saw me do it and people took pictures of me doing it? Well, that just proves how ignorant you are,’” says Kovaks, who recently submitted an application to change his legal name to Globefucker Supreme: The Criminal Who Fucks Globes. “Now I just say, ‘Yep, I fucked the globe and it was good and important and brave, and I’ll never stop telling people about how I did it and liked it.”
Uh, we’re not crying, you’re crying.
Ever since he learned to embrace his past as a kid who drilled a hole in a globe and had sex with it while his homeroom teacher begged him to stop, Lester’s life has completely turned around. He’s smiling more, and he’s more confident, and when people accuse him of fucking a globe, he just smiles and says, “Damn straight.” It’s the kind of story you think only happens in Hollywood movies, but for Lester Kovaks the fantasy is real.
What’s next for this brave globe fucker? “I’m probably going to try to fuck another globe,” Lester says. “It’s good to fuck a globe. A lot of people don’t even know that fucking the globe can be an option for them, but it’s totally easy. You just have to drill a hole in the globe and keep fucking it even when your teacher threatens to call the police. It’s awesome, it’s easy, and, most importantly, it makes the world a safer and more just place.”
This is officially the most life-affirming story you’re going to read all year. We’re so grateful that people like Lester Kovaks are learning to embrace the things that make them unique, whether that’s fucking a globe or throwing a math textbook at a moving car, which Lester also did and has no regrets about. Lawyers, politicians and activists have called for the release of one of Sierra Leone’s best-known celebrities, who they said was unjustly imprisoned as part of a government crackdown on free speech and political dissent.
Zainab Sheriff, a singer and reality-TV show contestant who became a political opposition figure, was sentenced in April to four years and two months’ imprisonment for incitement and using threatening language.

The Forza Horizon games have always been about drama. Not just the tension and excitement of racing, but also the sensory impact of the natural environment – the sun rising over a dense city, rain clouds hovering above a valley floor. There are moments in this game – perhaps after emerging from a dense forest, or coming up from an underpass – where Mount Fuji briefly appears in the distance, hazy yet majestic, the Platonic ideal of a volcano – and it almost takes your breath away. Fans of this series have been waiting years for Japan and now here it is, the whole country, reduced, remixed and repackaged as a driving paradise.
In many ways, Forza Horizon 6 is a continuation of what this series has always been about. You enter a festival-style driving competition then drive around a vast map splattered with various races and challenges, earning reputation by competing well and buying new vehicles for your extensive garage. There are slight changes this time – you start as a rookie not an established legend, so you have to qualify to enter the festival, and Playground has re-introduced the need to unlock successive levels of competition bringing back the sense of progression from the earliest titles in the series. You start out clattering about in slower C-class vehicles on easier circuits and have to work hard to start lining up against super cars such as the Ferrari J50 or Lamborghini Huracán.

This big, insightful show celebrates the pioneering American who was torn between painting beauty for beauty’s sake – and cutting through the glitz
It’s an odd, ungainly, unforgettable portrait. Anna McNeill Whistler’s face is rigid, lightless and cold as she poses for her son. She’s like a carving from a medieval tomb sutured to an aesthete’s dream. Starbursts of silver dance on the curtain in front of her while she sits as grim as death. Yet by painting her in silhouette, absorbing her black dress into his personal vision, Whistler turns her into a symbol of art for art’s sake.
At least that’s one way of seeing the masterpiece lent by the Musée d’Orsay that stars in Tate Britain’s luscious, seductive blockbuster dedicated to the American painter who delighted and scandalised late Victorian Britain. He competed with Walter Pater and Oscar Wilde for leadership of the Aesthetic Movement which dared to say that art has no responsibility to depict real life or serve a moral purpose. The cosmic curtain and carefully composed pattern of Whistler’s Mother add up to the movement’s earliest manifesto: to ram the point home, he called it Arrangement in Grey and Black No 1. Even when I’m painting my mum, says Whistler, I “arrange” her.

Laying bare the gamification of dating, Tadeo Pestaña Caro’s probing debut follows 20-year-old slacker Santiago (Max Suen), lost in a cycle of thwarted desire in Buenos Aires. Whether at his dead-end job at a call centre or lying awake in bed, he is glued to his phone, hungrily swiping through various dating app profiles. A sea of naked torsos and bulging crotches surge across his screen, each promising a passionate encounter and perhaps something more.
Caro’s film captures this obsession with striking psychological precision. There’s a paradox to Santiago’s compulsive behaviour, which is at once all-consuming and distracting. Faced with the illusion of choice, he can’t help swiping even when he’s on a night out with his coworker Karen (Jazmín Carballo), who plays a big-sister role to the restless young man. Santiago’s real-life conversations are punctuated with the constant pings of new messages, offering dopamine rushes that leave him wanting more.
