Canadian officials find structural defects in material used for hull and say firm failed to fully test ‘novel’ design

Canadian safety officials have issued a damning report on the catastrophic final voyage of the Titan submersible, finding that the US company behind the expedition was overcome by “groupthink” and “confirmation bias” and failed to understand the profound risks confronting their largely untested craft.

The 6.7-metre (22ft) carbon fibre submersible dipped below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean in June 2023 en route to the wreckage of the Titanic ocean liner. But nearly two hours after it departed with five passengers, communications went dark. The disappearance prompted a frantic international search, with Canada and the US marshalling all available resources.

As AI systems grow larger, optics are playing a larger part in their design – so much so that at Computex earlier this month, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang proclaimed the technology would make Marvell the next trillion dollar company. Now, Nvidia-backed photonics vendor Coherent plans to boost indium phosphide (InP) wafer production at its Sherman, Texas, fab by 4x in anticipation AI proliferation will trigger an explosion in optical interconnect demand. Supply chains must be ready to meet that demand when (or if) it materializes, and Coherent is one such supplier. The company operates eight wafer fabs across the US that produce semiconductors used in laser light sources and optical modules. These supply chains are so important to Nvidia’s future growth that, in March, the GPU slinger invested $2 billion in the optics vendor to bolster its production capacity. Coherent is wasting little time putting those funds to use. Along with $20 million in funding from the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund and the Sherman Economic Development Corporation, and up to $50 million in CHIPS and Science Act funding, Coherent plans to plow $650 million into its Sherman plant, effectively doubling the factory’s footprint and quadrupling InP wafer output. InP semis are commonly employed in lasers, photodetectors, and modulators found in optical interconnects. As rack scale AI systems grow from a few dozen accelerators to hundreds or thousands, copper is no longer sufficient and optics are now required to achieve this scale. We expect this trend to dramatically increase the number of optical components employed by these systems over the next couple of years. Coherent claims that the Sherman expansion will create about 1,000 new jobs, roughly 550 of which are directly related to advanced manufacturing, engineering, and technical roles. The company hasn't shared a timeline for when the expansion will be completed. We've reached out for comment and will let you know if we hear anything back. Coherent is not the only optics vendor Nvidia is bankrolling. This spring, GPUzilla also invested $2 billion in Lumentum, which produces a variety of optical products used in datacenters including pluggable transceivers, optical circuit switches, and laser modules. Less than a month later, Nvidia plowed another $2 billion into Marvell in part to accelerate its silicon photonics roadmap. ®

Het idee iets te posten over Haagse Blogs zou een paar weken duren, dacht ik. Precies 337 dagen later is er dit berichtje, en dat is niet omdat ik zoveel moest lezen. Mijn conclusie is dat er zeker nog wel mensen zijn die lokaal bloggen. Het zijn er alleen niet heel veel. Maar waren dat er ooit wel veel? Ik zet ze op een rijtje.

Allereerst zijn er natuurlijk veel nieuwsbrieven die de moeite waard zijn. Ik volg nieuwsbrieven met Feedbin in mijn RSS lezer, niet in e-mail. Dus voor mijn gebruik maakt het niet uit of iets een blog of nieuwsbrief is. Het fotomuseum, Haags Gemeentearchief, Stroom en verschillende festivals en musea hebben allemaal mooie nieuwsbrieven. Platform stad, voor liefhebbers van stedelijke ontwikkeling en architectuur van Den Haag. Allemaal aanraders. Soms zijn er voor buurten of wijken nieuwsbrieven, zoals een voor het Central Innovation District.

Maar dan de blogs.

Haagse Allerlei is erg actief. En, leuk, heeft een insteek die niet alleen gericht is op zaken die in centraal Den Haag spelen, maar juist soms ook over Den Haag Zuid gaat. En dat is fijn.

Jan de Wandelaar is actief. Veel nieuws, minder persoonlijk, maar 100% Haags.

Life in The Hague is Engelstalig, met de insteek van iemand uit de VS in Nederland. Post regelmatig.

En er is zelfs een nieuwkomer, zeer welkom, en dan ook nog eens over kunst; nieuwe kijkers.

Je zou verwachten dat met de populariteit van een blog / nieuwsbrief platform als Substack er een opleving zou zijn, maar dat is niet zo. Met een beetje ruim denken zou een Bekende Hagenaar (tegenwoordig) in dit rijtje kunnen. Er schrijft een politicus (politiek sla ik over). Maar verder is de oogst (nog) karig.

Er zijn er ook een paar helaas (bijna) stilgevallen.

Haagse praatjes heeft een ritme van 1 bericht per jaar, het laatste bericht is langer geleden. Randje stilgevallen dus, maar toch het vermelden waard. Haagse Hoogbouw post niets meer, maar is gelukkig nog wel actief op Flickr :) Haagspraak post incidenteel nog iets. Dit is een los collectief van mensen die elders wel dingen posten. Het zou leuk zijn als daar weer iets meer te lezen zou zijn.

Maar dat is de oogst. Eigenlijk helemaal niet slecht. En ik mis er nog vast wat. Ik vind het zelfs geruststellend om te zien dat er nog steeds mensen zijn die de tijd nemen om de stad met iets meer woorden vast te leggen. Lokaal bloggen is misschien een niche geworden, maar wel een prettige niche.

Het eiland Van Brienenoord zit vastgeklemd tussen de drukke A16, de scheepvaart en industrie. Toch is het een van de meest diverse stukken natuur van de stad omdat er plekken zijn waar eb en vloed de ruimte krijgen. Nu is het plan om dit getijdenpark een kilometer door te trekken. En dat is goed voor planten en dieren.
