ANTALYA (ANP) - Zangeres Karsu heeft woensdag in de Turkse stad Antalya een koninklijke onderscheiding gekregen. Ze is benoemd tot Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau. De Nederlandse ambassadeur in Turkije, Joep Wijnands, heeft namens de koning de onderscheiding uitgereikt.

Karsu kreeg het lintje als erkenning voor haar jarenlange inzet voor maatschappelijke doelen en haar verbindende kracht. Zo bracht de zangeres na de verwoestende aardbevingen in Turkije in 2023 een kookboek uit om geld op te halen voor de slachtoffers. Met de tonnen die het boek opleverde, kon ze een aantal gezinnen financieel adopteren.

"Karsu is een buitengewoon muzikaal talent, met een groot hart. Met haar muziek, authenticiteit en maatschappelijke betrokkenheid bouwt Karsu bruggen tussen Nederland en Turkije", aldus ambassadeur Wijnands.

De Turks-Nederlandse zangeres is bekend van nummers als Jest Oldu en Siyah. Ze maakte in 2021 indruk met haar deelname aan het programma Beste Zangers. Ook was Karsu dit jaar op Bevrijdingsdag een van de vier Ambassadeurs van de Vrijheid.

NEW YORK (ANP) - Koerswinsten voor grote techbedrijven hebben voor een record gezorgd op Wall Street. De brede graadmeter S&P 500 eindigde hoger dan ooit in de aanloop naar een topontmoeting tussen de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump en zijn Chinese ambtgenoot Xi Jinping. In Trumps kielzog reisden ook topbestuurders van techbedrijven als Nvidia en Tesla mee naar China.

De S&P 500 eindigde 0,6 procent hoger op 7444,25 punten. Techgraadmeter Nasdaq steeg 1,2 procent tot 26.402,34. De Dow-Jonesindex verloor juist 0,1 procent tot 49.693,20.

De graadmeters begonnen de dag nog overwegend lager door zorgen over oplopende inflatie. Nieuwe cijfers wezen erop dat de afzetprijzen van fabrikanten in de Verenigde Staten hard waren gestegen, na sterk gestegen energieprijzen door de Iranoorlog.

Nvidia

Bedrijven waarvan de leiders meereisden naar China kregen extra aandacht van beleggers. AI-chipontwikkelaar Nvidia sloot 2,3 procent hoger, nadat de medeoprichter Jensen Huang op het allerlaatst toch nog mee mocht naar China. Ook Micron Technology, Qualcomm, Tesla en Boeing zagen hun aandelen tot bijna 5 procent stijgen.

De in Amsterdam gevestigde cloudcomputingprovider Nebius Group rapporteerde een omzetstijging van 684 procent in het eerste kwartaal. Het op de Nasdaq genoteerde aandeel steeg bijna 16 procent. In het afgelopen jaar is de waarde van het aandeel al verviervoudigd.

Alibaba

Chinese webwinkel Alibaba, die ook een notering heeft in New York, kwam eerder op de dag met kwartaalresultaten. Het aandeel steeg met 8,2 procent. Goudproducent Equinox Gold neemt zijn branchegenoot Orla Mining over in een deal ter waarde van 5,1 miljard dollar. Die overname wordt afgehandeld in aandelen en contanten. Equinox Gold daalde met 2,1 procent en Orla Mining ging 0,8 procent omhoog.

De olieprijzen daalden enigszins. Brentolie werd 1,9 procent goedkoper op 105,77 dollar per vat. Een vat Amerikaanse olie daalde 0,9 procent in waarde tot 101,23 dollar.

LOOSDRECHT (ANP) - De politie heeft de demonstranten in Loosdrecht woensdagavond opgedragen weg te gaan. De situatie rond het protest begon in de loop van de avond grimmig te worden en er werd ook vuurwerk afgestoken. De mobiele eenheid is ter plaatse met onder meer een waterkanon.

Een groep stond te demonstreren op enige afstand van het gemeentehuis waarin een noodopvang voor asielzoekers zit, omdat de gemeente na een uit de hand gelopen protest dinsdag strikte maatregelen heeft ingesteld. Zo mogen bij het gemeentehuis alleen nog mensen met "een aantoonbaar redelijk doel" komen. Bij een rotonde in de buurt was een demonstratievak aangewezen, waar de mensen woensdagavond weer bijeenkwamen.

Rond 21.45 uur vorderde de politie de demonstranten om weg te gaan. Daarop verspreidden de mensen zich. De mobiele eenheid stelde zich zo op dat de mensen niet naar het gemeentehuis konden.

SANTIAGO (ANP/BLOOMBERG) - Chileense wetenschappers waren dicht bij een vaccin tegen het hantavirus, maar moesten hun onderzoek staken omdat het geld op was. Dat schrijft persbureau Bloomberg. Voordat het vaccin getest kon worden op mensen, kwam het project stil te liggen tijdens de coronapandemie.

Virologe María Inés Barría vertelt het persbureau dat het mogelijke vaccin zich richtte op de Andesvariant, waarvan bekend is dat hij van mens tot mens kan worden overgedragen. Het is dezelfde variant die uitbrak op het Nederlandse cruiseschip Hondius, waarbij meerdere doden vielen.

Zelfs als de financiering rond zou komen, schat Barría dat het haar team een tot twee jaar kost om op hetzelfde onderzoeksniveau terug te komen.

Andere wetenschappers werken ook aan een vaccin tegen de dodelijke variant van het hantavirus, die vooral in Zuid-Amerika voorkomt. In Chili zijn dit jaar al 39 gevallen geregistreerd, met 13 doden als gevolg. In Zuid-Argentinië zijn tot begin mei dit jaar 42 infecties vastgesteld.

LOS ANGELES (ANP) - De Amerikaanse filmregisseur Erik Fleming is woensdag veroordeeld tot twee jaar gevangenisstraf voor het leveren van ketamine aan acteur Matthew Perry, meldden Amerikaanse media. Perry verdronk in 2023 in zijn jacuzzi door de gevolgen van de ketaminedosis. Fleming pleitte schuldig in augustus 2024.

"Ik heb ketamine geregeld voor Matthew Perry omdat ik het geld wilde en omdat ik dacht dat ik een vriend een dienst bewees", schreef Fleming in een brief aan de rechtbank van Los Angeles. "Ik heb nooit de slechtst mogelijke uitkomst overwogen. Deze verschrikkelijke fout zal me voor altijd achtervolgen."

Fleming is een van vijf verdachten in de zaak. Alle vijf hebben schuld bekend. Fleming werkte samen met Jasveen Sangha, ook bekend als "Ketamine Queen". Sangha kreeg in april 15 jaar celstraf opgelegd.

Perry is bekend van zijn rol als Chandler Bing in de sitcom Friends.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Het vullen van de gasopslagen in Nederland loopt moeizaam, waarschuwt Gasunie. In de komende weken is ingrijpen nodig om het vuldoel voor de winter te halen, zei algemeen directeur Jeroen Zanting tijdens een technische briefing van Kamerleden over leveringszekerheid. Door de Iranoorlog zijn de gasprijzen hard gestegen, wat het onaantrekkelijk maakt om nu aardgas in te kopen om op te slaan voor de winter.

Volgens Zanting kan eind juni of begin juli een situatie ontstaan dat de vier gasopslagen in Nederland zo langzaam worden gevuld dat het vuldoel voor de winter niet wordt gehaald. Aan het eind van het vulseizoen, tot 1 november, moeten de voorraden tot 87 procent gevuld zijn.

Zanting opperde dat de regering Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN) een groter deel van het benodigde gas kan laten inkopen namens de overheid. Ook noemde Zanting de mogelijkheid van subsidies voor marktpartijen om de bergingen te vullen, iets wat in de jaren 2022 en 2023 ook gebeurde.

Zorgvuldig omgaan

Bij het vullen van de gasopslagen zijn private partijen eerst aan zet, maar EBN kan inspringen als zij het laten afweten. Tot nu toe heeft EBN een vultaak tot 80 terawattuur (TWh), veel meer dan de 25 TWh van vorig jaar.

De directeur voor gastransactie bij EBN, Nicolien Vrisou van Eck, waarschuwde in dezelfde briefing dat de gasinkopen namens de overheid de gasprijzen niet nog verder moeten opdrijven. "Wij moeten zorgvuldig omgaan met onze vulopdracht. Als we nu maximaal gaan inkopen, heeft dat een effect op de marktprijzen. Dat willen we uiteraard voorkomen", zei ze.

Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris is perhaps one of the world’s most famous burial grounds, home to luminaries like authors Oscar Wilde and Marcel Proust, musicians and composers like Frédéric Chopin, Édith Piaf, and even The Doors’ Jim Morrison, among many others. Its family tombs and sculptural headstones are iconic, and when artist Marina Kappos spent time wandering through Père Lachaise during a stay in the city last year, she was intrigued by the sculptures of grieving women she encountered. “They seemed to hold a power in their sadness, but also great beauty and remembrance as they stood guard over many of the tombs,” the artist says.

In Piercing the Veil at SHRINE, Kappos’ solo exhibition that opens this week, the artist delves into the nature of loss and memory. “Grief is a somber subject and multi-layered; it feels fitting for the time we’re living in, but I also saw hope and life bursting through,” she says. Few instances highlight the duality of life and death so well as the context of a cemetery, and that’s where the artist honed in on her interest in relationships between presence and absence, the terrestrial and the spiritual, and impermanence and decay.

Piercing the Veil features Kappos’ signature aura-like acrylic paintings on wood panels in which thin layers of pigment create a kind of gauzily psychedelic, prismatic effect. Consciousness is at the root of her works, reflected in the title of the show, which references the idea of awakening—of achieving some kind of enhanced comprehension or level of perception within one’s world. “These paintings depict that threshold,” Kappos says, “moving from one realm to another.”

Hazy landscapes unfold in the distance of some works, and keyhole shapes emerge almost Magic Eye-like in the center of several others. These focal portals unlock something, the artist says, “perhaps our own beliefs and the haze of the unknown, or they can act like doorways to another time or place.” And the figure of the widow, influenced by the gravestones, is present in elegant facial profiles and hands. Kappos likens her to someone who has not only been left behind but may be a spectre herself—one that “has power, magic, strength, and can potentially straddle two worlds.”

Security vulnerabilities in MCP servers for three popular database projects could let attackers execute unintended SQL statements on Apache Doris, exfiltrate sensitive metadata from Alibaba RDS, and potentially take over Apache Pinot instances exposed to the internet. Alibaba, meanwhile, declined to patch its flaw. Apache issued a patch and a CVE tracker for Doris MCP, and there’s an open ticket in the MCP Pinot Github repository for the flaw, we're told. However, Alibaba decided not to patch the vulnerability in RDS MCP, according to Akamai security analyst Tomer Peled, who wrote about the flaws on Tuesday and will present his full research next month at x33fcon. MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is an open source protocol originally developed by Anthropic that allows LLMs, AI applications, and agents to connect to external data, systems, and one another. While security issues are never a good thing - and they are especially concerning when they exist in a server sitting between an AI agent and a production database, these in particular point to a larger problem in the way MCPs are developed. “There is missing or faulty security validation between the MCP server and its back end,” Peled wrote, adding that these security “gaps will become high-value targets for attackers and we expect more of these issues to surface.” Here’s a closer look at all three, starting with the flaw that has since been fixed and assigned a CVE. Apache Doris is a high-speed analytics and search database with more than 10,000 mid- and large-enterprise users. Its MCP server allows AI agents to interact with and perform operations on Doris instances. This includes SQL queries or retrieving table and schema metadata - and foreshadows the found flaw: CVE-2025-66335, a SQL injection vulnerability, that affects Apache Doris MCP Server versions earlier than 0.6.1. When an MCP tool is called, the server’s “exec_query” function fails to validate one of the five parameters (the db_name parameter) before constructing the SQL query. This means an attacker can invoke the function and inject malicious SQL through the db_name parameter, which gets prepended to the beginning of the final SQL statement. Plus, the SQL validator only checks the first portion of the query, so all it sees is the attacker’s directive. “As a result, any attacker that gains access to a client connected to the Doris MCP server can execute arbitrary commands on the victim’s Apache Doris instance,” Peled said. Apache issued a patch in December to fix this flaw. The second issue, an authentication validation bypass in Apache Pinot MCP, can also lead to SQL injection attacks and full database takeover. Apache Pinot is another super-fast analytics database, and StarTree’s MCP integration for Pinot before v2.0.0 allowed users to run queries directly from their AI agent against their Pinot instance. The open-source project uses HTTP as the transport layer without requiring any type of authentication. This exposes the endpoint to remote attackers who can reach it, allowing them to invoke MCP tools, including those used for SQL execution. “In environments where the MCP endpoint is reachable externally, this behavior allows unauthenticated attackers to execute queries against the Pinot instance, which can allow a full remote takeover of the database,” Peled wrote. StarTree has since added OAuth as an authentication option when using HTTP, which he says lowers the threat of SQL injection (but it still exists in the code), and Apache has also opened a security issue in the MCP Pinot github repository. Pinot MCP v1.1.0 and earlier versions are affected. Neither Apache nor StarTree responded to The Register’s requests for comment. The third security flaw, an information disclosure issue in the Alibaba RDS MCP server, also stems from the server not authenticating users before invoking the retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) MCP tool, which allows AI models to connect with and query databases. This means “any client able to reach the MCP endpoint can issue requests to the server without any query validation,” according to Peled. “The vector index may contain table names, schema definitions, or other potentially sensitive metadata, and unauthenticated attackers can exfiltrate this data with little or no effort." All versions of Alibaba RDS MCP are affected by this vuln. The bug hunter says that he reported the issue to Alibaba in November, and the cloud giant told him the issue is “not applicable” for a fix - so it’s still in the codebase. Akamai also reported this inaction to the CERT Coordination Center (CERT/CC). Alibaba did not respond to The Register’s inquiries. Peled said that the threat-hunting team, upon starting this investigation, assumed that there would be some baseline security specification for all MCP servers. Turns out they were wrong, and as the research found, flaws like SQL injection, missing authentication, and insufficient query validation exist in the code. “This means that more attention should be given not just to the specification but also to the best security practices guides when developing secure MCP servers,” he wrote.®
