One of the most enduring traditions in the U.S. is undoubtedly the state fair. The very first was held in Syracuse, New York, in 1841, and throughout the mid-19th century, states launched their own unique takes. Some of the largest and busiest, such as those in Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin, have been running just about as long as the states have existed. And it’s no coincidence that some of the most well known and beloved events, which usually take place in the late summer or early autumn, represent the nation’s agricultural heartlands.
The exhibition State Fairs: Growing American Craft at the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery celebrates the unique crafts and customs of these annual festivals. From cows sculpted out of butter and 4-H contests to seed art and crazy foods, ingenuity is as much a part of the tradition as showcasing time-honored farming practices, rural culture, industry, and of course, arts and crafts.

The Minnesota State Fair is particularly well known for its seed art, which consists of tableaux made entirely of grains and seeds that are cultivated in the state. Artists often translate famous artworks using a variety of crops, and portraits of celebrities are another popular subject. When submitted for consideration, artists must supply a “legend card” that demonstrates which seeds they used.
The Renwick Gallery show highlights more than 240 objects and artworks, from elaborate contemporary jewelry pieces to historic quilts to a rhinestone rodeo outfit. A contemporary mixed-media resin necklace by artist and jewelry designer Morgan Hill celebrates treats and pastimes, while a geometric weaving by Agueda Martínez (1898-2000) highlights the extraordinary craft of Southwest tapestry blanket weaving.
Growing American Craft is the first large-scale survey of state fair creativity of its kind, representing 43 states and Tribal Nations. “Ribbon-winning artworks and engaging craft demonstrations illuminate the lives of the artists—their families, memories, honors, and struggles,” the museum says.
Part of the show’s aim is to highlight the pride, resilience, and inventiveness of rural communities, dashing stereotypes in the process and illuminating how fairgrounds are woven into the social fabric of the U.S. Visitors encounter a wide range of unique interpretations of state fair events, such as a pyramid of more than 700 glass jars of preserved fruits and vegetables by canner extraordinaire Rod Zeitler.

Crops themselves take center stage in many of the works, including an elaborate sweetgrass basket by South Carolinian artist Corey Alston, who draws on the Gullah Geechee basket traditions to weave remarkably imaginative designs. And Justin Favela has also reimagined the palatial Rubenstein Grand Salon into an immersive space titled “Capilla de Maiz (Maize Chapel).” The walls are fringed with gold and piñata corncobs, tapping into the role of maize in America throughout several millennia.

Discussions on Europe re-engaging with Moscow have become louder amid deadlocked U.S. efforts to halt the war in Ukraine while Trump's attention has been consumed by Iran.
Don't count your bit barns before they've at least started to hatch. Developers continue to announce new datacenter construction projects, but construction work for many due to come online this year or next appear not to have commenced, while planned capacity may have been overestimated. According to financial analyst Jefferies, known promises to build new stateside datacenters suggest 160 GW worth of infrastructure will be operational in the country by 2032 In a research note shared with The Register, the firm reports pervasive delays and claims that only 12 GW out of 24 GW of datacenter capacity scheduled for 2026 is currently under construction. The situation is even worse for the 2027/2028 timeframe, as substantial construction of as much as 80 percent of the planned capacity does not appear to have started yet. The reasons for the delays are familiar: zoning and/or permitting challenges, interconnection setbacks, problems accessing energy supply, labor shortages, and the signing of commercial contracts with end users. Power availability is a well-known issue, as are grid connection setbacks. The latter have grown so bad – reports of seven-year delays - that the US Energy Secretary directed the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to implement new rules to speed the process for customers such as datacenters. Jefferies highlights another factor, that of duplicative counting inflating the planned total capacity due to hyperscalers making multiple requests to various energy utilities. For this reason, it does not expect the majority of the extra load forecast for 2026 and 2027/2028 to materialize. Some investor expectations do not reflect real-world constraints, primarily labor, the report says, suggesting that 15-20 GW of capacity coming online per year is more realistic than the 40+ GW forecast by some for 2027-28. Announced capacity should not be considered a reliable way of evaluating data campus load growth, Jefferies says, citing offtake agreements, permitting progress, financing, and a realistic construction timeline as better indicators. The report points to strategies that operators are taking to circumvent the issues outlined above. Behind-the-meter and hybrid models are solutions to the power problem, with “hybrid” referring to datacenters tending to take all they can get from the grid first, before later turning to behind-the-meter sources - typically on-site power generation. Jefferies says that the build pipeline is shifting increasingly toward regions with more attractive interconnection and permitting options, pointing out that Texas had 14 GW of new capacity announced in the second quarter of this year alone. ®

Maar zijn ex Katja Schuurman kan er niet om lachen.
Cabaretier en acteur Devin Hillenius speelt in de video Thijs Römer en zegt onder meer: "Weet je hoe zwaar het is om je macht te misbruiken. Bij minderjarigen." In het filmpje vraagt iemand: "Begrijp ik het nou goed dat jij geld probeert te verdienen aan kindermisbruik dat je zelf hebt gepleegd?"
Katja Schuurman vindt het allesbehalve grappig. Onder de video reageert ze: "Misschien moet je eerst gaan kijken. Dan kun je je parodie baseren op de voorstelling, in plaats van op je aannames over wat die ongeveer zal zijn. En misschien is het dan wél grappig."
DEN HAAG (ANP) - Het kabinet gaat de wet over wapens en munitie aanpassen. Daarmee wordt in elk geval een psychologisch onderzoek verplicht voor mensen die een wapenvergunning willen of hebben, schrijft minister David van Weel (Justitie, VVD) aan de Tweede Kamer. Ook denkt hij aan strengere regels om thuis wapens te bewaren, en aan nieuwe eisen over kennis van wapens.
Een paar jaar geleden moesten mensen die een wapen wilden gebruiken nog een zogeheten e-screener doen, een digitale psychologische test. Die werd geschrapt na bezwaren van onder meer schietsportorganisatie KNSA. Volgens deskundigen moeten psychologische experts betrokken zijn bij het oordeel.
De kern van de wet blijft hetzelfde: burgers mogen in principe geen wapens hebben. In specifieke gevallen mag dat wel, bijvoorbeeld voor jacht, sport of in musea. De overheid bepaalt die regels. Op dat punt kloppen de regels volgens Van Weel nu niet, omdat verenigingen sommige beslissingen over wapenbezit mogen maken. Onder de nieuwe wet mag dat niet meer.
Schade betalen
Een ander uitgangspunt wordt dat mensen moeten betalen voor schade die ze met hun wapen veroorzaken. Dit "zodat slachtoffers beter worden beschermd en de maatschappelijke kosten eerlijker worden toegerekend". Verder wil Van Weel beter zicht krijgen op waar wapens liggen.
Al met al moet de wet duidelijker en samenhangender worden, vindt de minister. "De huidige wet is complex en onoverzichtelijk."
Hoe de wet er precies uit komt te zien, wordt later duidelijk. Van Weel wil die in de eerste helft van volgend jaar publiceren voor reacties en eind volgend jaar aanbieden aan de Tweede Kamer.
AMSTERDAM (ANP) - Opnieuw is een boek van Pim Lammers bekroond met een Zilveren Griffel, de juryprijzen voor de beste kinderboeken van het afgelopen jaar. Ben je vergeten dat babygeitjes bestaan? won in de categorie poëzie. De bijbehorende illustraties van Nadia Meezen werden tegelijkertijd bekroond met een Zilveren Penseel, heeft boekenkoepel CPNB bekendgemaakt.
Vorig jaar won Lammers ook al een Zilveren Griffel, toen voor zijn boek Een ongelofelijk grote, ongelofelijk gevaarlijke leguaan. De illustraties van Natascha Stenvert waren toen ook al goed voor een Zilveren Penseel.
In totaal reikte de jury twaalf Zilveren Griffels en acht Zilveren Penselen uit in verschillende leeftijdscategorieën. Onder de winnaars bevinden zich bekende kinderboekenschrijvers als Sjoerd Kuyper en Annet Schaap. Alle Nederlandstalige titels in deze lijst dingen later dit jaar mee naar de Gouden Griffel en Gouden Penseel.
Voor het eerst heeft CPNB dit jaar ook een Groene Griffel uitgereikt voor het beste literaire kinderboek dat verhalen over de natuur tot leven brengt. De eerste winnaar is Wij, beren van Lotte Stegeman, met illustraties van Marieke ten Berge.
Congressman Jamie Raskin alleges FBI director authorized substantial recurring payments to agents in his inner circle
FBI director Kash Patel has been accused of directing more than $1m in taxpayer-funded bonus payments to a small circle of loyalist agents as part of a “personal slush fund” that may have violated federal law.
Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the ranking member of the House of Representatives judiciary committee, alleged Patel had authorized substantial recurring payments to agents in his inner circle and security detail.
