Open letter criticising invitation to Nigel Farage warns of association with ‘racism and inflammatory rhetoric’
Political leaders have been invited to a rally opposing antisemitism on Sunday, with British Jews hoping the “silent majority” will join them for a “million mensch march” across central London.
The prime minister, Keir Starmer, is considering attending the Standing Strong: Extinguish Antisemitism rally, which is backed by more than 30 Jewish groups, while the Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch is expected to speak. The Liberal Democrats’ leader, Ed Davey, has also been invited.

For much of its history since its discovery by the Portuguese in the mid-15th century, the Cape Verde archipelago off the coast of west Africa served as a hub of the international slave trade, with Africans forcibly transported to marketplaces before being distributed across the Americas and Europe.
Now, almost 150 years since slavery was abolished in Cape Verde, and just over 50 years since independence from Portugal, Pedro Fernandes Lopes wants the country to become a beacon for the free movement of human and financial capital across the African diaspora.

TEL AVIV (ANP/AFP) - Israël heeft zondag twee activisten van de Global Sumud Flotilla het land uitgezet. Het had de mannen ruim een week geleden opgepakt in internationale wateren bij Griekenland, omdat zij met andere activisten op schepen hulpgoederen naar de Gazastrook wilden brengen.
De deportatie is bekendgemaakt door het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. De Spaans-Palestijnse Saif Abukeshek en de Braziliaanse Thiago Ávila werden voor verhoor meegenomen naar Israël, op verdenking van banden met een terroristische organisatie en illegale activiteiten. Zij ontkenden de beschuldigingen.
Spanje, Brazilië en de Verenigde Naties hadden opgeroepen tot hun vrijlating. De landen spraken van een onwettige detentie. Israël haalde ook andere activisten van schepen van Global Sumud Flotilla, maar zette hen af op het eiland Kreta. Alleen Abukeshek en Ávila moesten mee naar Israël.
'Professionele provocateurs'
Het ministerie noemt de twee "professionele provocateurs". Abukeshek en Ávila zitten in de organisatie van de Global Sumud Flotilla en zijn leiders van de jongste poging om de Israëlische zeeblokkade van Gaza te doorbreken. Israël begon die blokkade in 2007, toen Hamas het Palestijnse gebied onder controle kreeg.
In Gaza zijn door de in 2023 uitgebroken oorlog grote tekorten aan voedsel, medicijnen en andere essentiële goederen ontstaan. Alle noodhulp die het gebied ingaat, moet via grensovergangen die onder Israëlische controle staan. Volgens hulporganisaties wordt niet genoeg noodhulp toegelaten.
MADRID (ANP) - De Spaanse koning Felipe en koningin Letizia "volgen de operatie op het eiland Tenerife op de voet in verband met de aankomst van het schip m/v Hondius". Dat schrijft het Spaanse hof op Instagram. Het Nederlandse cruiseschip, waar het hantavirus uitbrak, kwam zondagochtend aan bij het Spaanse eiland.
Ook deelt het paleis dat het Spaanse koningspaar in nauw contact staat met premier Pedro Sánchez en Fernando Clavijo, de president van de Canarische Eilanden, over de situatie op Tenerife.
De m/v Hondius arriveerde zondagochtend in de haven van Granadilla de Abona, waar de opvarenden door medisch personeel en de autoriteiten van boord worden gehaald. De passagiers worden getest op het hantavirus en op een repatriëringsvlucht gezet. Het virus kostte enkele reizigers het leven.
