NEW YORK (ANP) - Whirlpool ging donderdag hard omlaag op de beurzen in New York. De in Michigan gevestigde fabrikant van koelkasten en wasmachines verlaagde de winstverwachting voor het hele jaar met ongeveer de helft. Ook schort het concern het dividend op om schulden af te betalen. Het historisch lage consumentenvertrouwen door de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten weerhoudt veel mensen ervan de duurdere huishoudelijke apparaten van het bedrijf te kopen.

De oorlog heeft volgens Whirlpool geleid tot een "recessie-achtige daling van de industrie", met als gevolg hogere prijzen voor huishoudelijke apparaten. Het aandeel werd bijna 16 procent lager gezet.

De algehele stemming op Wall Street was voorzichtig positief na de stevige winsten en nieuwe recordstanden van een dag eerder. De Dow-Jonesindex noteerde kort na opening van de markt 0,4 procent hoger op 50.127 punten en de brede S&P 500-index 0,1 procent hoger tot 7373 punten. Techbeurs Nasdaq steeg 0,1 procent tot 25.874 punten.

De S&P 500 en Nasdaq sloten woensdag op nieuwe recordstanden door de hoop dat de oorlog tussen de Verenigde Staten en Iran snel voorbij is. Vooral de chipbedrijven deden het goed door sterke resultaten van Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). AMD daalde nu 1,6 procent, na een koerssprong van bijna 19 procent een dag eerder.

McDonald's klom 1,1 procent. De fastfoodketen boekte in het eerste kwartaal meer omzet en winst dan verwacht. Topman Chris Kempczinski sprak van een sterk kwartaal ondanks de "uitdagende omstandigheden". Zowel op de Amerikaanse thuismarkt als internationaal zag McDonald's de verkopen stijgen, waarbij consumenten per bezoek meer uitgaven.

DoorDash werd 4,7 procent meer waard. De maaltijdbezorger presteerde afgelopen kwartaal beter dan verwacht en gaf optimistische verwachtingen af voor het aantal bestellingen in het huidige kwartaal.

Snap zakte ruim 2 procent. De eigenaar van het socialemediaplatform Snapchat gaf een voorzichtige omzetverwachting af voor het tweede kwartaal, na tegenvallende advertentie-inkomsten in het eerste kwartaal.

Warner Bros. Discovery verloor 0,1 procent. Het entertainment- en mediaconcern leed in het eerste kwartaal een nettoverlies van 2,9 miljard dollar. Het verlies werd echter vooral veroorzaakt door de vergoeding van 2,8 miljard dollar die Warner aan Netflix moest betalen voor het beëindigen van de overnamedeal met de streamingdienst. Warner ging in februari akkoord met een hoger overnamebod van concurrent Paramount Skydance.

Holder went back to woman’s Cheltenham flat after night out and refused to stop assault even when she began crying

A co-founder of the clothing company Superdry has been jailed for eight years for raping a woman after a night out in Cheltenham.

James Holder, 54, had been due to get a taxi back to his home in the Cotswolds with a male friend. Instead, the pair got into the victim’s taxi and went to her flat in the Gloucestershire town, where Holder raped her.

Thirty-five years ago, two films about the legend of Robin Hood – stealer from the rich, giver to the poor – met and duelled in cinemas; we all know who won, Kevin Costner’s big-budget blockbuster, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. But what about the other one? It was titled simply Robin Hood, directed by John Irvin and starring Patrick Bergin in the title role alongside a pre-Pulp Fiction Uma Thurman as Maid Marian.

“It was very much a stand-alone film with the aim of giving Kevin Costner’s version a good kicking if we could,” says Irvin, now 85. “The studio wanted to go immediately because they wanted to pre-empt the Costner.”

State-backed hackers have been quietly exploiting a fresh zero-day in Palo Alto Networks firewalls to gain root access with no login required. The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-0300 and carrying a CVSS severity rating of 9.3, affects the Captive Portal feature in PAN-OS on PA-Series and VM-Series firewalls. Palo Alto said the issue stems from a memory corruption bug in the User-ID Authentication Portal, a feature used to handle logins for users the firewall cannot automatically identify. If successfully exploited, the bug allows attackers to remotely run arbitrary code on internet-exposed devices with root privileges. According to the vendor’s Unit 42 threat intelligence team, attacks are already underway and tied to a cluster of "likely state-sponsored threat activity" tracked as CL-STA-1132. The attackers allegedly used the zero-day to inject shellcode into an nginx worker process running on compromised devices. Palo Alto said the first failed exploitation attempts began on April 9. About a week later, the attackers successfully achieved remote code execution on a targeted firewall and then cleared logs, crash reports, and other records tied to the compromise. The attackers later used their access to move deeper into victims’ networks, including probing Active Directory systems while continuing to clean up traces of the intrusion from compromised devices. According to Palo Alto, the campaign expanded again on April 29 when the attackers triggered a flood of authentication traffic that caused a secondary firewall to take over internet-facing duties. The attackers then compromised that device as well and installed additional remote access tools. CISA has already shoved the flaw into its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, which is usually the government’s polite way of saying "patch this before your weekend disappears." There’s just one snag: there is no patch yet. Until one arrives, Palo Alto is urging customers to either lock down the User-ID Authentication Portal so it is reachable only from trusted networks or disable it entirely. The warning also lands after a rough run for PAN-OS customers. Palo Alto firewalls have been a regular target for attackers over the past two years, with multiple zero-day campaigns hitting internet-facing devices before patches were widely deployed. In many cases, attackers chained together flaws to break into networks through the very boxes meant to keep them out. ®

The article states the company "can install 8,000 XFRA units about six times faster and at five times lower cost than the construction of a typical centralized 100 megawatt data center of the same size." Could this be the solution to at least some of the problems hindering the rollout of greater data-center capacity for AI systems? "One big reason the XFRA model works is that the average American home only uses about 40 percent of its electrical capacity," Span said. "As big data center developers struggle to find power sources and distribution capacity, XFRA uses capacity that's already available."

The startup says they will launch a 100-home proof of concept within the year to see if the idea is viable.
