DEVENTER (ANP) - Wielerploeg Picnic PostNL start vrijdag met vijf Nederlanders aan de Giro d'Italia. Sprinter Casper van Uden gaat proberen zijn ritzege van vorig jaar een vervolg te geven. De niet fitte klassementsrenner Max Poole ontbreekt, waardoor de Nederlandse ploeg de strategie heeft moeten aanpassen naar "aanvallend koersen, dagelijks kansen zoeken en deze grijpen wanneer het moment zich aandient".

De Nederlanders Van Uden, Frank van den Broek, Timo de Jong, Gijs Leemreize en Tim Naberman krijgen gezelschap van de Fransman Warren Barguil, de Brit Sean Flynn en Chris Hamilton uit Australië.

"In de zwaardere etappes hebben renners als Chris, Frank, Warren en Gijs al laten zien dat ze resultaten kunnen rijden in grote rondes, en die kwaliteiten willen we opnieuw benutten. Drie weken koers wordt een uitdaging, maar wel één waar we met deze groep klaar voor zijn", zegt coach Matt Winston op de website van de ploeg.

Trump noemde het incident een "minioorlogje" en suggereerde dat hij voorlopig niet escaleert, ondanks groeiende druk van partijgenoten als senator Lindsey Graham om Iran hard te straffen.

De aanval legt de kern van Trumps probleem bloot: hij wil geen nieuwe bombardementscampagne, maar Iran lijkt niet te willen onderhandelen over zijn nucleaire programma. Na het staakt-het-vuren van 7 april legde Washington een blokkade op Iraanse havens om Teheran te dwingen, maar dat leverde geen resultaat op. De Amerikaanse operatie van maandag was bedoeld als middenweg tussen totale oorlog en de blokkade, maar Iran reageerde direct met geweld.

Strategische waarde en economische impact

De Straat van Hormuz is 's werelds belangrijkste olieroute: ongeveer 20 miljoen vaten per dag – ruim een kwart van alle verhandelde olie – passeert hier. Sinds het begin van de oorlog houdt Iran een wurggreep op de doorgang, met directe gevolgen voor brandstofprijzen en de wereldeconomie. Trump ziet de crisis als afleidingsmanoeuvre van zijn aanstaande top met de Chinese leider Xi Jinping, terwijl analisten erop wijzen dat zijn eerdere inschatting – dat bombardementen Iran snel op de knieën zouden krijgen – zich niet bewaarheidt.

De vraag is nu of Trump zijn diplomatieke inzet voortzet of alsnog kiest voor militaire vergelding.

En alweer hangt het lot van de wereld af van de buien van een half demente narcist.

OPINION It's been another shabby week for Microsoft, and a shabbier one for its users. We learnt that Windows 11's epic habit of trying to corral customers into paid-for Microsoft services just got worse with a low-rent trick. Remote Desktop got a bit more secure, which is good, but in a way that suggests not too much user testing took place. As for GitHub… GitHub got two helpings of Chef Redmondo's Special Sauce. The first course is the signature dish of Microsoft's code cuisine, Pâté de Foul AI, in which AI is force-fed down our necks much as geese have tubes stuck down theirs to make Pâté de Foie Gras. This is not good news for the geese, but in GitHub's case it's not much good for Microsoft either. Its effusive over-offer is proving unsustainable and it has had to introduce rationing. It's all a bit of a mess, especially for a Big Tech outfit that claims intimate knowledge of developers and of AI. The second course is less than gourmet. GitHub is turning up late and cold. One of GitHub's biggest fans, Hashicorp co-founder Mitchell Hashimoto, says that the platform is now so unreliable due to daily outages it can't be considered as safe for production. This is much more significant than it seems on the surface. Hashimoto is a five star code chef, serving up unusual yet delicious dishes in unlikely genres, such as terminal software with elegant and useful innovations. Hashimoto is also a huge fan of one of GitHub's less obvious, under-rated and critical roles, that of educational resource. Its use to train AI is controversial, but its use to train humans should be noisily celebrated. Open source can claim significance in part because it makes textbooks of techniques and solved problems that anyone can read. This is terrific for the health and growth of the talent we need to make progress in the digital realm — but only if those textbooks can be found, accessed and searched. GitHub is the global library for that. It's also the industry standard for collaboration, source control, and moving projects between organizations. Those who had to do such things before Git and GitHub existed will shudder at the remembered pain of those days, and if that was all GitHub did it would still be an essential service for everyone. It isn't. It is all those things and a pillar of digital culture as well. Whatever Microsoft thought it was buying when it bought GitHub, it was also buying that responsibility. To be fair, it has mostly honored that. It hasn't absorbed and dismembered it, rolled it into a badly compromised component of some existing strategy, or sacked everyone and shut things down. None of these is an uncommon fate for a previously successful product post-acquisition. To date, GitHub has prospered, ostensibly on its own terms. Now, something tastes rotten. When a previously reliable service becomes flaky, the reasons are lack of resources or the loss of knowledge. Give the right people the right tools and the right budget, and let them get on with it. Assuming there's enough money, this happens with the right management and it makes things work. It does not happen with the wrong management, in which case it is difficult or impossible to stop bad things happening. Bad things are happening in GitHub. QED, baby. Bad management doesn't have to be the immediate management of a project or division, as structural rot can set in anywhere and make its way like a fungus up and down the org chart. There is certainly plenty of evidence that a pathological fixation on AI is appropriating resources and managerial mindspace with consequent opportunity costs and neglect elsewhere. You can sum up that business gibble-gabble in six words: Windows is an agentic operating system Further proof that Microsoft is a long way from giving the right people the right tools is that it is encouraging the right people to leave the company, paying engineers to go away. Voluntary redundancy is a poisonous draught with a long and bitter aftertaste. It encourages the best people to go first, as they have the best chance of finding well-paid employment elsewhere. You're left with those who lack the talent or confidence in themselves, in an intellectually impoverished workplace, often with an increased workload and tasks for which they lack experience. They may not last long either. Microsoft may actually believe that its own AI will pick up the slack. There's evidence that it believes this, and evidence it isn't true. Even the best AI in the world can't help you if you're asking the wrong questions and ignoring the right answer. The pressure from outside to take those users away is building, with impeccably functional alternatives all across the stack and governments flicking lit matches into accelerants like digital sovereignty. Letting GitHub get sick is a terrible advertisement for a company complacent about user confidence. The recipe doesn't taste good. One day, the only thing left on the menu may be toast. ®

Geen prettige dagen voor beide landen, maar vooral niet voor Rusland. In de nacht op 4 mei wist een Oekraïense drone de Russische luchtafweer te omzeilen en zich in een luxe woontoren in Moskou (de House on Mosfilmovskaya) te boren, slechts op kilometers van het Kremlin en het Russische ministerie van Defensie. Geen slachtoffers, wel een flinke portie gezichtsverlies. Het gezichtsverlies werd vannacht nog wat erger met succesvolle Oekraïense aanvallen op Russische militaire industrie. Onder meer op een complex voor elektronische oorlogsvoering in Cheboksary - 1.200 kilometer van de grens. Alsof je een raket van Utrecht naar Marseille schiet.

Wel, de eerste 'succesvolle' Oekraïense drone-aanval op Moskou in drie jaar vinden ze in Rusland niet leuk, in het bijzonder met het oog op de Overwinningsparade op 9 mei. Op die dag wordt overwinning op Duitsland in 1945 gevierd en Zelensky hintte er al op de parade over het Rode Plein te verkloten met zoemende drones. Doe het niet, aldus Poetin, die daarop een eenzijdig staakt-het-vuren voor 8 en 9 mei heeft afgekondigd, met daarbij de waarschuwing Kiev te zullen aanvallen met een 'massive missile strike' als het staakt-het-vuren niet wordt nageleefd. Zelensky doet niet mee met het cynische spelletje van Poetin en kondigde een eigen staakt-het-vuren aan, te beginnen vannacht.

Poetin zelf is volgens een uitgelekt EU-rapport (EU is waardeloos in deze oorlog: stuurt geld, drinkt thee en schrijft rapporten, doet en kan verder niks) doodsbang. Hij vreest binnenkort te worden omgelegd door Oekraïne, óf van binnenuit door coup te worden afgezet. Mogelijke kandidaat-dader van die coup zou de voormalig MinDef Sergei Shoigu zijn, dus die zal binnenkort wel uit z'n hotelraam vallen. Rond Poetin zijn de beveiligingsmaatregelen flink aangescherpt. Hij zit voornamelijk ondergedoken in zijn bunker in Krasnodar Krai, komt minder in Moskou en bezoekt militaire faciliteiten niet meer. Dat deed hij in 2025 en daarvoor nog wel regelmatig; door Russisch uitgezonden beelden op staatsmedia nu zijn herhalingen. Mensen in de entourage van Poetin (bodyguards, koks, enz.) worden vaker gecheckt en gescreend, en mogen geen telefoons met internet bij zich dragen en de voortdurende internetproblemen in Rusland zouden ook deels met Poetins veiligheid te maken hebben. Leuk leven!

Diplomatiek staat de boel nog altijd stil. Poetin blijkt nog steeds bereid z'n economie in de soep te laten draaien en miljoenen mannen in de vleesmolen te pleuren voor (vooralsnog) een klein beetje grondgebied, en de enige die 'm echt tot bedaren zou kunnen brengen is Donald Trump en Donald Trump is volslagen labiel. Bovendien hebben de Amerikanen nog wat anders aan hun hoofd, namelijk het Midden-Oosten. Zelensky lijkt dat te willen ondervangen door de Amerikanen te omzeilen en Turkije (nog) meer in het spel te betrekken, maar dat kost tijd, en tijd is geld en vooral heel veel mensenlevens. Mensenlevens die vooral worden opgegeven aan de frontlinie, maar ook daar ligt de boel plat. ISW: "Neither Ukrainian nor Russian forces made confirmed advances on the frontline."
