NEW YORK (ANP) - Under Armour ging vrijdag hard onderuit op de aandelenbeurzen in New York. De pogingen van de sportkledingfabrikant om de verkopen aan te jagen na een omzetdaling in de afgelopen twee jaar lijken vast te lopen. Het sportmerk voorziet een grotere daling van de omzet in het huidige kwartaal dan kenners hadden verwacht.

Under Armour kampt onder meer met een zwakke vraag in Noord-Amerika door de aanhoudend hoge inflatie en onzekerheid over de handelstarieven van president Donald Trump. Het aandeel werd 17,9 procent lager gezet.

De algehele stemming op Wall Street was gematigd positief, na de sterke koerswinsten eerder deze week. De Dow-Jonesindex noteerde kort na opening van de markt 0,3 procent hoger op 44.118 punten. De brede S&P 500-index klom 0,3 procent tot 6361 punten en techgraadmeter Nasdaq steeg 0,4 procent tot 21.319 punten.

De Nasdaq koerst af op een weekwinst van bijna 3 procent. De S&P 500 is bijna 2 procent gestegen in de week die in het teken stond van het ingaan van de nieuwe importheffingen van president Donald Trump op goederen van de meeste handelspartners van de Verenigde Staten.

Ook zorgde de aankondiging van een ontmoeting tussen Donald Trump en Vladimir Poetin voor optimisme. Het overleg, dat binnen enkele dagen zou moeten plaatsvinden, wakkerde de hoop aan op een mogelijk einde aan de Russische oorlog in Oekraïne.

De speculatie op een renteverlaging door de Federal Reserve nam ook verder toe. Trump heeft Stephen Miran voorgedragen voor de vrijgekomen functie van nieuwe bestuurder bij de centrale bank. Miran is op dit moment voorzitter van een raad die de Amerikaanse president adviseert over economisch beleid. Miran volgt Adriana Kugler op, die begin deze maand opstapte. Trump heeft de afgelopen tijd druk uitgeoefend op de Fed om de rente te verlagen en zou het liefst Fed-voorzitter Jerome Powell willen vervangen door iemand die leenkosten wel wil verlagen.

Apple daalde 0,3 procent. Het techconcern won in de afgelopen twee dagen ruim 8 procent, na de aankondiging om nog eens 100 miljard dollar te investeren in de VS. Dat bedrag komt bovenop eerder toegezegde investeringen van 500 miljard dollar. Apple wil met dat geld onder andere de productie van zijn apparaten naar de VS halen.

Expedia Group werd 5,6 procent meer waard. De onderneming achter reissites als Trivago en Hotels.com boekte in het tweede kwartaal meer omzet en winst dan verwacht. Pinterest kelderde 10,1 procent, na tegenvallende kwartaalresultaten van het socialemediabedrijf.

De club stond donderdag voor de rechter tegenover de KNVB. De voetbalbond trok de proflicentie in juli in na jaren van financieel wanbeleid.

Marine Rosset is openlijk lesbisch en lid van de Socialistische Partij. Dat bleek lastig te verenigen met het katholieke en conservatieve karakter van de landelijke scoutingvereniging. Rosset trok zich deze week terug.

Na 133 jaar valt het doek definitief voor Vitesse. De rechtbank Utrecht bepaalde in kort geding dat de KNVB rechtmatig de licentie voor betaald voetbal heeft ingetrokken. De club uit Arnhem kent een roerige geschiedenis en heeft een paar grote voetballers voortgebracht.

Joy Machine is thrilled to present Speak of the Devil, a joint exhibition of ceramic and mixed-media works by Chicago artists Haylie and Sydnie Jimenez. The exhibition runs from August 9 to September 20, 2025.

An expression of endearment and surprise, “speak of the devil” is about manifesting what one desires. The idiom connotes a strange, even magical ability to conjure someone’s presence with a mere mention. Simply say their name and wait for them to appear.

For Haylie and Sydnie Jimenez, making art is also an act of conjuring. Twin sisters with parallel and sometimes collaborative practices, the artists work primarily in ceramics and share a similar aesthetic, one rooted in narrative and rich with tattoos, piercings, and a generally punk style. Where Sydnie focuses on three-dimensions and builds figurative sculptures and totemic heads, Haylie prefers to etch scenes into flat panels. Both artists act as world-builders, depicting their queer, Black and brown friends and neighbors embracing their chosen kin.

“These groups of people we call family and friends are the best of us and should be recognized as such,” the artists say. “We want to fully acknowledge our wonderful communities and depict them as they should be.”

The Jimenez sisters were raised in the South, first in Florida and then in Georgia, with a Catholic mother. Born from religious fear, the phrase “speak of the devil” originated as a 17th-century superstition of summoning evil. The expression has since lost its sinister meaning, although a surface reading still elicits the diabolical.

This contradiction between a superficial interpretation and reality is one Haylie and Sydnie are endlessly interested in teasing out. They have lived in Chicago for nearly a decade and have found commonality between their adopted city and the South: “both places that often get a bad rep but are so rich in culture, shared histories and positive aspects,” they say.

Speak of the Devil invokes the cultural and social similarities between Chicago and the South. Centering people first and foremost, the artists highlight the vibrant communities that thrive in both regions. Architectural details like Sydnie’s gargoyle-esque sculptures and domestic items like Haylie’s lamps and inlay tables reference the very spaces necessary to establishing meaningful relationships and a community of care.

While celebrating their friends, family, and those who might become such in the future, the artists create a warm, welcoming environment–complete with custom-stenciled walls—that offers an alternative to both oppression and violence and enduring stereotypes proliferated through popular culture and the media. This is their own magical act of conjuring. By visualizing a world of radical acceptance, pleasure, and endless joy, the artists lay the foundation to make such a world appear.
