A cylindrical hull stands out in this shot taken during the latest spacewalk for maintenance and science on the International Space Station. Several platforms grow from it like tentacles reaching out for direct access to the vacuum of space, or to an unobstructed view of Earth.

This engineering and scientific shiny marvel is the Columbus laboratory circling our planet at 28 800 km/h and 400 km above our heads.

On 11 February 2008, 17 years ago today, Columbus became ESA’s largest single contribution to the International Space Station and the first permanent European research facility in space

The 7 m long, 4.5 m wide module has since been used to run experiments on everything from cold plasma technology to 3D printing metals and to probing astronauts’ bodies and brains. Inside and out, it provides the microgravity environment and facilities for researchers to test technology and study phenomena that cannot be observed on Earth.

Research conducted on this versatile laboratory has the dual purpose of advancing human spaceflight capabilities and improving the quality of life on Earth. Studying the driving factors of bone loss in astronauts, for example, could help physicians treat patients suffering from osteoporosis.

Columbus houses as many disciplines as possible in a small volume, from astrobiology to metallurgy and psychology – over 250 experiments have been carried out in this remarkable facility, with many more to come.

Inside this workspace are 10 racks, each roughly the size of a phone booth. Each rack can host autonomous and independent laboratories, complete with power and cooling systems. Researchers on Earth can control and monitor experiments in the European Columbus laboratory by relaying commands and experiment data directly from their workplaces.

The Columbus Control Centre in Oberpfaffenhofen, near Munich, Germany, is the direct link to European experiments and astronauts in orbit.

The next Europeans to visit the lab will be ESA project astronaut Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski in 2025, while ESA astronauts Sophie Adenot and Raphaël Liégeois will travel to the Space Station in 2026.

ESA’s Biomass mission will soon play a key role in delivering novel information about the state of our forests, how they are changing over time, and advance our knowledge of the carbon cycle. It is the first satellite to carry a fully polarimetric P-band synthetic aperture radar for interferometric imaging. Thanks to the long wavelength of P-band, around 70 cm, the radar signal can slice through the whole forest layer to measure the ‘biomass’, meaning the woody trunks, branches and stems, which is where trees store most of their carbon.

JERUZALEM (ANP/RTR) - De Israëlische premier Benjamin Netanyahu heeft gewaarschuwd dat het bestand met Hamas wordt beëindigd als de groep zaterdag geen gijzelaars laat gaan. De oorlog wordt dan hervat tot Hamas is verslagen, zei de regeringschef.

Hamas heeft deze week aangegeven de ruil van Israëlische gijzelaars voor Palestijnse gevangenen voorlopig stil te leggen. Volgens de groep houdt Israël zich niet aan de afspraken in het bestand. Israël zou onder meer de levering van tenten hebben tegengehouden.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Op het laatste moment heeft een meerderheid van de Tweede Kamer een gesprek met Francesca Albanese, de VN-gezant voor de Palestijnse gebieden, geannuleerd. Vooral rechtse partijen keerden zich tegen een ontmoeting. "Een nieuw dieptepunt in deze Kamer en we waren getuige hoe rechtse cancelcultuur werkt", reageerde Kati Piri (GroenLinks-PvdA) na afloop. Zij had de gezant uitgenodigd.

Het voorstel om de bijeenkomst af te gelasten kwam van de SGP, die zich altijd vierkant achter Israël opstelt. SGP'er Diederik van Dijk verwijt de "zeer vooringenomen VN-rapporteur" onder meer de aanval van Hamas op Israël op 7 oktober 2023 te bagatelliseren. Hij vindt dat de Kamer dergelijke opmerkingen niet moet legitimeren. Hij kreeg steun van JA21, FVD, PVV, BBB, ChristenUnie en VVD.

Piri wees erop dat de indieners van het verzoek (naast SGP gaat het om PVV en BBB) eerder wel mensen uitnodigden die pleiten voor "etnische zuivering van Palestijnen". De drie partijen doen een "lelijke poging om de mond te snoeren van mensen die opkomen voor de rechten van de Palestijnen". Isa Kahraman (NSC) zei de opmerkingen van Albanese "verwerpelijk" te vinden, maar ook dat er "heel zwaarwegende overwegingen" moeten zijn om het besluit ongedaan te maken.

De beslissing viel in een zogeheten procedurevergadering van de Kamercommissie voor Buitenlandse Zaken. Die worden normaliter niet druk bezocht, maar dit keer waren bijna alle partijen aanwezig.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - De provincie Zuid-Holland heeft geen vertrouwen in het plan dat Qbuzz onlangs indiende om het busvervoer in het noordelijke deel van de provincie te verbeteren. Het college van Gedeputeerde Staten gaat Qbuzz daarom miljoenenboetes opleggen. "Dit is een logische consequentie, omdat de dienstverlening niet conform onze afspraken is", aldus gedeputeerde Frederik Zevenbergen (openbaar vervoer, VVD).

Hoe hoog de boetes zijn, moet het college nog bepalen. In de afspraken die de provincie en het vervoersbedrijf hebben gemaakt, staan al vastgestelde bedragen. Zo kan de provincie een boete van 2 miljoen euro geven als reizigers "vermijdbare hinder" ondervinden bij de start van de dienstverlening, op 15 december afgelopen jaar. Als tussen die startdatum en 12 januari meer dan 1 procent van de ritten uitvalt, kan een boete van 1 miljoen euro volgen. Dat percentage ligt al weken aanzienlijk hoger, afgelopen week op ruim 5 procent.

Mede doordat een groot deel van de bestelde elektrische bussen niet op tijd klaar was, verloopt de start van Qbuzz chaotisch in en om steden als Alphen aan den Rijn, Gouda, Leiden en Katwijk. Veel bussen komen te laat of rijden helemaal niet. Ook zijn verhalen bekend over chauffeurs die de weg niet weten.
