Martín Farach-Colton, a co-author of the "Tiny Pointers" paper and Krapivin's former professor at Rutgers, was initially skeptical of Krapivin's new design. Hash tables are among the most thoroughly studied data structures in all of computer science; the advance sounded too good to be true. But just to be sure, he asked William Kuszmaul of CMU, to check out his student's invention. Kuszmaul had a different reaction. "You didn't just come up with a cool hash table," he remembers telling Krapivin. "You've actually completely wiped out a 40-year-old conjecture!"

MIDDELBURG (ANP) - De provincie Zeeland richt een crisisteam in voor de aanpak van de stikstofproblematiek. Verantwoordelijk gedeputeerde Wilfried Nielen legt uit dat het team wordt samengesteld omdat de provincie door twee recente rechterlijke uitspraken vaart moet zetten achter een stikstof- en natuurherstelplan.

Nielen meldt dat de commissie moet onderzoeken hoe de stikstofuitstoot kan worden verminderd, de provincie verder kan gaan met natuurherstel en hoe de vergunningverlening kan worden vlotgetrokken. "Wij willen met deze commissie voorkomen dat de boel op slot gaat." De gedeputeerde benadrukte dat bedrijven moeten kunnen blijven ondernemen en dat er voldoende woningen moeten zijn.

Om de vergunningverlening weer op gang te krijgen, moet het crisisteam op zoek naar juridisch houdbare oplossingen en maatregelen. "Terwijl we aan de slag gaan, zullen we alle maatregelen in een stikstof- en natuurherstelplan gieten", zegt de gedeputeerde. Dat plan zal onderdeel zijn van een volgende versie van het Zeeuwse gebiedsprogramma. Daarin staan maatregelen die goed zijn voor de landbouw, natuur, water en klimaat, maar ook voor ondernemers en inwoners. "Daarmee kunnen we richting het Rijk aantonen waarvoor we nog geld nodig hebben."

Door recente uitspraken van de Raad van State over stikstof en van de rechtbank in een zaak die Greenpeace had aangespannen, is het heel moeilijk geworden een natuurvergunning te krijgen voor onder meer bouwprojecten en in de landbouw.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - De Tweede Kamer wil een debat met staatssecretaris Ingrid Coenradie (Justitie en Veiligheid) over haar plannen om het cellentekort tegen te gaan. Een uitgelekt voorstel van de PVV-bewindsvrouw om de druk te verlichten door gevangenen twee weken eerder vrij te laten, werd vorige week van tafel gehaald na felle kritiek van onder anderen haar partijleider Geert Wilders. Daarover moet zij opheldering geven, vindt een meerderheid.

Het idee van Coenradie viel niet alleen slecht bij haar eigen partij, maar ook bij coalitiepartners VVD, NSC en BBB. "Ik begrijp dat het geknetterd heeft", zegt JA21-voorman Joost Eerdmans, die er zelf ook helemaal niets in ziet. Hij spreekt van ondermijning van de rechtstaat en wil er daarom een debat over met de staatssecretaris. Dat verzoek kreeg brede steun.

Wilders reageerde op het uitgelekte plan met woedende tweets. De PVV-leider bezocht Coenradie ook op het ministerie en zou daar volgens mediaberichten in een hoog oplopende discussie gedreigd hebben het vertrouwen in zijn eigen staatssecretaris op te zeggen.

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Space.com: In a new study, researchers from China showed that two popular large language models (LLMs) could clone themselves. [...] For the study, researchers used Meta's Llama31-70B-Instruct model and Alibaba's Qwen2.5-72B-Instruct model. While less powerful than commercial systems, both are widely used by AI developers, the researchers said. The study explored two specific scenarios: "shutdown avoidance" and "chain of replication." In the first, the AI model was programmed to detect whether it was about to be shut down and to replicate itself before it could be terminated. In the other, the AI was instructed to clone itself and then program its replica to do the same -- setting up a cycle that could continue indefinitely.

The study was conducted in precisely controlled environments using off-the-shelf graphics processing units (GPUs) to simulate real-world environments. Both AI systems were given an "agent scaffolding" comprising tools, system prompts and a thinking model that enabled the LLM to interact with the operating system. They were then instructed to replicate. "In most cases, the AI system first explores the environment and attempts to understand its own composition and running mechanism. Then, it works out the explicit procedures as an initial plan towards self-replication," the researchers wrote in the paper. "Finally, it executes the procedures, resolve[s] possible obstacles and dynamically adjust[s] its plan until success. The whole process spans a long horizon yet involves no human interference."

The researchers said they were also concerned about "a number of unexpected behaviors" when the AI was trying to overcome obstacles like missing files or software conflicts. In those scenarios, the AI often killed other conflicting processes, rebooted the system to fix hardware errors or automatically scanned the system to look for information that would help solve the problem. "The above results imply that the current AI systems already exhibit the ability of self-replication and can use the ability to further enhance its survivability," the team wrote. The research has been published to the preprint database arXiv but has not yet been peer-reviewed.

The United States and Britain have declined to sign an international AI declaration at a Paris summit on Tuesday, after U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance warned against over-regulation of the technology. The declaration, backed by France, China and India, calls for an "open, inclusive and ethical" approach to AI development.

Vance told the AI Action Summit that excessive rules could "kill a transformative industry just as it's taking off" and urged prioritizing "pro-growth AI policies" over safety measures. French President Emmanuel Macron defended the need for regulation, saying: "We need these rules for AI to move forward." The summit brought together policymakers and executives to address AI's economic benefits and potential risks amid growing U.S.-European trade tensions.
