BEIJING (ANP/RTR) - China wil dat de Verenigde Staten de exportbeperkingen versoepelen op chips die cruciaal zijn voor kunstmatige intelligentie. Voor Beijing zouden afspraken hierover onderdeel moeten zijn van een handelsakkoord voorafgaand aan een mogelijke top tussen presidenten Donald Trump en Xi Jinping, meldde de Britse zakenkrant Financial Times zondag op basis van ingewijden.
Chinese functionarissen zouden experts in Washington hebben verteld dat Beijing wil dat de regering-Trump de exportbeperkingen op zogenoemde high-bandwidth memory (HBM)-chips versoepelt. De kwestie zou ook aan de orde zijn gesteld bij de huidige handelsbesprekingen tussen China en de VS.
China heeft tot dinsdag de tijd om een nieuwe overeenkomst met het Witte Huis te bereiken, anders riskeert het land opnieuw torenhoge Amerikaanse importheffingen. De Amerikaanse minister van Financiën Scott Bessent heeft eerder wel laten weten dat deze deadline waarschijnlijk wordt uitgesteld.
CINCINNATI (ANP) - Tennisster Aryna Sabalenka heeft zich in haar eerste partij sinds Wimbledon niet laten verrassen op het WTA-toernooi van Cincinnati. De Belarussische nummer 1 van de wereld bereikte in Ohio de derde ronde na een zege op Marketa Vondrousova uit Tsjechië: 7-5 6-1.
Sabalenka (27) werkte in de eerste set zes breakpoints weg, waarna ze op 6-5 haar eerste kans op de service van Vondrousova benutte. In de tweede set won ze vanaf 1-1 vijf games op rij om de winst binnen te halen.
Sabalenka, die een bye had in de eerste ronde, treft in de derde ronde de Britse Emma Raducanu. De Belarussische schakelde vorige maand de mondiale nummer 39 op Wimbledon in de derde ronde uit (7-6 (6) 6-4). Sabalenka verloor in Londen zelf in de halve finales van de Amerikaanse Amanda Anisimova.
Agenten hebben in de nacht van zaterdag op zondag de bestuurder van een bestelbus staande gehouden, omdat hij erg aan het slingeren was. Op beelden van 112-fotografen is de bus te zien op de Kleiweg in Rotterdam, bij het Franciscus Gasthuis.

Aanstaande vrijdag zullen volgens Trump op Poetins verzoek de Twee Groten elkaar ontmoeten. Ergens in Alaska, al is de exacte locatie nog niet bekend. De melodie rondom de ontmoeting is dezelfde als vorige keer: Trump en Poetin willen zeer waarschijnlijk de frontlinies bevriezen waar ze nu ongeveer liggen, 'Europese leiders' hameren erop dat Oekraïne betrokken moet worden bij de onderhandelingen, en Zelensky lijkt te zeggen dat hij niet bereid is tot het opgeven van Oekraïens grondgebied, en al helemaal niet als het enkel leidt tot een tijdelijke wapenstilstand in plaats van een permanent vredesbestand.
CNN schrijft nu over een eventuele betrokkenheid van Zelensky bij de ontmoeting tussen Trump en Poetin het volgende:
"However, the White House has not completely ruled out including Zelensky in some meetings, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN. One White House official stressed that anything involving Zelensky would likely happen after the Trump-Putin meeting. (...) A White House official said Trump remained “open to a trilateral summit with both leaders” but that “the White House is planning the bilateral meeting requested by President Putin.”"
Okay, dus als Zelensky erbij is, zit-ie waarschijnlijk in een kamertje verderop. We blijven kijken.

Last month Microsoft pledged $4 billion (in cash and AI/cloud technology) to "advance" AI education in K-12 schools, community and technical colleges, and nonprofits (according to a blog post by Microsoft President Brad Smith). But in the launch event video, Smith also says it's time to "switch hats" from coding to AI, adding that "the last 12 years have been about the Hour of Code, but the future involves the Hour of AI."

And what's going to be important is to make sure in education we give students the tools so they don't just become passive users of AI, but so that they learn how AI works."
Speaking to Microsoft's Smith, Partovi vows to redouble the nonprofit's policy work to "make this [AI literacy] a high school graduation requirement so that no student graduates school without at least a basic understanding of what's going to be part of the new liberal arts background [...] As you showed with your hat, we are renaming the Hour of Code to an Hour of AI."
