In 1881, when he was half through his adult life, quintessentially American painter Winslow Homer upstakes and went to England. For a year and a half he lived in a sea front hotel at Cullercoats, near the mouth of the River Tyne. He hung out with fisherfolk (men to the sea, women to the shore) and captured their lives and the weather on canvas. "Never put more than two waves in a picture; it's fussy." He might have been particularly (chastely) en-mused by 15 y.o. Maggie Jefferson [14min National Gallery UK documentary] whose image appeared in many of his paintings. In Sweden, eco-minded architects are have designed the "world's largest wooden city", an "urban environment infused with the serenity of a forest", with construction commencing this year. Naturally, interesting wooden architecture is not a new thing, even for large buildings...

Russia, in particular, has a history of unusually creative wooden architecture. Colourful terems, or traditional wooden palaces, showed Byzantine and Asiatic influences and often featured multiple towers. Meanwhile, less wealthy people used similar architectural elements to make creative and beautiful dachas, or summer houses. Complex and detailed churches were often made of wood and often featured wooden onion domes, while a tradition of creative and detailed wood carving can be seen on the decorative elements of many wooden buildings, in particular, fantastical window surrounds.

MIDDELKERKE (ANP) - De Nederlandse veldrijder Joris Nieuwenhuis heeft in het Belgische Middelkerke de laatste cross uit de serie om de Superprestige gewonnen. Voor de 28-jarige Nieuwenhuis, die een groot deel van het seizoen miste door gordelroos, was het de eerste overwinning sinds hij ruim een jaar geleden Nederlands kampioen werd. Pas vier weken geleden reed hij zijn eerste cross van het seizoen.

Kort achter Nieuwenhuis finishte de Belg Eli Iserbyt als tweede. Diens landgenoot Niels Vandeputte werd derde en verzekerde zich van de winst in het eindklassement over acht veldritten.

In het Chinese dorpje Jinping werden tien huizen onder puin bedolven na een aardverschuiving op zaterdagochtend. Reddingswerkers zijn in het gebied actief. Er zijn twee mensen levend onder het puin gehaald.
