SKAGEN (ANP/DPA) - Timmy, de bultrug die wekenlang vastlag voor de Duitse kust, is vrijgelaten. De walvis werd met een schip naar het Skagerrak gebracht, het deel van de Noordzee tussen Denemarken en Noorwegen, en is daar in open water losgelaten.
Volgens de krant Bild kwam Timmy na de vrijlating nog kort boven water om een waterstraal te spuiten en zwom hij daarna weg. Het dier zou nog wel te zien zijn op dronebeelden.
Timmy strandde eind maart in de buurt van het Noord-Duitse Timmendorfer Strand, en dankt daar zijn naam aan. Hij wist een aantal keer los te komen uit het ondiepe water, maar kwam daarna telkens weer vast te liggen.
Afgelopen dinsdag werd de bultrug in een bak met water geladen, die door een schip naar de Noordzee moest worden gebracht. Experts hadden kritiek op de actie omdat de reis ook zwaar zou zijn voor het verzwakte dier. Walvissen kunnen bijvoorbeeld slecht tegen het lawaai van een schip.
CULIACÁN (ANP) - Rubén Rocha Moya, de gouverneur van de Mexicaanse staat Sinaloa, is tijdelijk opgestapt. Dat meldt The New York Times. Rocha Moya werd deze week aangeklaagd in de Verenigde Staten, omdat hij banden zou hebben met een drugskartel.
De 76-jarige gouverneur zegt onschuldig te zijn, maar wel tijdelijk een stap opzij te doen om zich te kunnen richten op zijn verdediging. "Ik kan mijn mensen en mijn familie in de ogen kijken, omdat ik ze nooit verraden heb en dat zal ik ook nooit doen."
Rocha Moya wordt er door de VS van beschuldigd jarenlang te hebben samengewerkt met het machtige Sinaloa-kartel. Hij zou de bende hebben beschermd, in ruil voor steekpenningen en politieke steun. Washington diende een uitleveringsverzoek in bij Mexico.
De politicus is een prominente partijgenoot van de Mexicaanse president Claudia Sheinbaum. Zij zei nog geen bewijs te hebben gezien voor de aantijgingen.
HOUTEN (ANP) - Het warme en droge weer van de afgelopen dagen maakt in het weekend plaats voor fris en regenachtig lenteweer. Op zowel dodenherdenking als Bevrijdingsdag is het fris, met op maandag temperaturen tussen de 14 tot 16 graden. Op Bevrijdingsdag wordt het niet warmer dan 12 tot 16 graden.
Weeronline ziet dat de weersomslag op zaterdag begint. Stevige regen- en onweersbuien trekken dan in de avond het land over, met kans op windstoten en hagel. Ook kan er in korte tijd veel neerslag vallen.
Na het weekend komt de wind uit noordelijke richting, waardoor het flink afkoelt. De meeste zonuren worden op maandag en dinsdag in de kustgebieden verwacht. Landinwaarts is het meer bewolkt. Daar is ook de kans op regen groter.
Bevrijdingsdag kent door de jaren heen een wisselend weerbeeld. In 1957 vielen er op die dag winterse buien, wat leidde tot sneeuw in de Limburgse heuvels. De koudste Bevrijdingsdag was in 1979. Het werd die dag niet warmer dan 7,2 graden in De Bilt. De warmste Bevrijdingsdag werd gemeten in 1990 met 27,8 graden in De Bilt.
German defence minister responds to US president’s announcement that 5,000 US troops will leave bases in Germany

The German defence minister, Boris Pistorius, said that it was “foreseeable” that the US would withdraw troops from Europe, after the Pentagon announced it would pull thousands of American soldiers from Germany.
Trump said he is “not satisfied” with a new proposal from Iran on ending the war, as peace talks remain stalled despite a weeks-long ceasefire. Iran delivered the proposal text to mediator Pakistan on Thursday evening, Iranian state news agency Irna reported, without detailing its contents.
The US state department said it was approving military sales totalling more than $8.6bn to Middle Eastern allies Israel, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. It came as Washington warned European allies including the UK, Poland, Lithuania and Estonia to expect long delivery delays for US weapons as it scrambles to replenish stockpiles depleted by the Iran war, according to a report in the Fianancial Times citing multiple sources.
In Lebanon, 12 people were killed in Israeli strikes in the south, Lebanon’s health ministry said, including in the town of Habboush, where the Israeli army had issued an evacuation order despite the continuing ceasefire. Israeli warplanes “launched a series of heavy strikes … less than an hour after” the warning, the state-run National News Agency said.
The US Treasury Office warned that any shipping companies that paid tolls to Iran for passage through the strait of Hormuz, including charitable donations to organisations such as the Iranian Red Crescent Society, would risk punitive sanctions. Tehran has proposed charging fees on vessels passing through the strait, as part of a deal to end the war.
Trump wrote to US lawmakers on Friday declaring hostilities with Iran “terminated”, despite no change in the US military posture, as he faces continuing pressure at home to seek congressional authorisation for the war.
The state department’s announcement on Friday included approving military sales to Qatar of Patriot air and missile defence replenishment services costing $4.01bn and of advanced precision kill weapon systems (APKWS) costing $992.4m. They also included approval of the sale to Kuwait of an integrated battle command system costing $2.5bn and to Israel of APKWS costing $992.4m.
Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei urged his people to wage economic battle and “disappoint” its enemies, as the war and years of sanctions take a toll. In a written statement he also said “the owners of damaged businesses should avoid, as much as possible, layoffs and separation of their workforce”.

The existential therapist Emmy van Deurzen moved to the UK inspired by RD Laing, the Scottish anti-psychiatrist who said insanity is a “perfectly rational adjustment to an insane world”. It was 1977 and Van Deurzen, who is Dutch and had studied philosophy and psychology in France, found work with the Arbours Association in London, a therapeutic community based on Laing’s ideas, in which people in crisis, psychiatrists and therapists lived together as equals. It was a rude awakening.
Arbours aimed to create space for people to “explore their madness”. “Now that was a very interesting idea,” Van Duerzen says, “but in practice it meant that people self-medicated, with alcohol and pot, and it was not a happy situation.” The residents were often very depressed or psychotic, and it was common to be woken up at night because someone was seeing things or had become suicidal. Van Deurzen came to believe that anti-psychiatry had “lost courage”: it had proposed a different way of thinking about madness, but having released people from asylums and taken them off neuroleptic drugs, it was “kind of leaving them to it”. “And this is what I realised wasn’t good enough,” she says. When people are experiencing a mental health crisis, they need help to make sense of what has happened to them, and to find their way to healing. “From that moment on I just knew: nobody’s doing this. I’m going to have to do it myself,” she says.
