Company accepts it failed to prevent bribery in connection with contracts in Algeria and Oman sought through agents

The British defence company Ultra Electronics has accepted responsibility for a failure to prevent bribery and agreed to pay £15m after an investigation by the Serious Fraud Office.

The penalties are part of a deferred prosecution approved by the high court on Friday, after an investigation opened in 2018 when the company referred itself to the UK law enforcement agency a month after corruption allegations were published by Algerian media.

US president says tariff on cars and lorries will rise to 25% and accuses European Union of non-compliance

Donald Trump has said he is tearing up part of the tariff deal he struck with EU leaders at his golf course in Scotland last summer, criticising Brussels for taking so long to ratify the deal.

Blindsiding Brussels late on Friday, a public holiday in much of Europe, he announced that he would be increasing tariffs on cars and lorries imported into the US from the EU from 15% to 25% from next week.

First linked from the blue in 2012, the incomparable XOXO festival and conference, created to celebrate and connect indie artists and creators working on the internet, celebrated its final year in 2024. Now, after years of working in secrecy, Andy & Andy have published a monumental cornucopia called XOXO EXPLORE, including all of the videos, lineups, schedules, festival documentation, and archived standalone websites for the entire run of their "experiment gone right". As someone who had his life changed monumentally by XOXO and the greater community it built, I really wanted to pull out a couple of my favorite talks from the videos, but it's hard when the hitrate is like 99% solid gold. For his latest video essay, Evan Puschak tells us about Un Chien Andalou, the pioneering surrealist short film by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí. The film is particularly notable for a shocking shot in the opening scene, which, if you’ve seen it, you’ve likely never forgotten. Said Buñuel of the film:

This film has no intention of attracting nor pleasing the spectator; indeed, on the contrary, it attacks him, to the degree that he belongs to a society with which surrealism is at war.

ik ben al lang lezer van jullie blog, om verschillende redenen. Eigenwijs, diepgravend, ironisch, cynisch, karakter (ballen). Maar 15 jaar geleden werd ik weggejorist, nadat ik mijn ergernis had uitgesproken over de decibellen-terreur op de Nederlandse wegen, door met name de motorrijders. En aangezien jullie nog nooit JULLIE ergernis over dit hufter-gedrag hebben uitgesproken/er een artikel over hebben geschreven, weet ik dat jullie de apen-herrie en dito gedrag eigenlijk best geinig vinden en mensen als ik "niet zo moeten zeiken"..Ik heb alle reden jullie financieel te ondersteunen, maar dit is een thema waar JULLIE je hoofd voor in het zand steken. Hoe geweldig ik jullie blog ook vind, dát is de reden dat ik jullie niet meer ondersteun.

Dank voor je complimenten en wat vervelend dat je comment 15 jaar geleden is weggejorist. Vermoedelijk komt dat omdat je de huisregels (die waren er toen ook al) aangaande offtopic reaguursels niet hebt nageleefd. Daarnaast steken wij ons hoofd nergens voor in het zand, maar vinden wij de decibellen-terreur op de Nederlandse wegen, door met name de motorrijders, gewoon niet zo'n belangrijk onderwerp. Als je niet tegen geluid op de weg kunt, dan raden wij je aan de weg niet op te gaan, en anders oordopjes, en als die niet werken kun je nog altijd je hoofd in het zand steken, dan hoor je helemaal niks. Sowieso bepalen wij zelf wel waar we ons over opwinden, of dat nou linkse deugers die asielcijfers verdraaien, linkse deugers die cartoons intrekken, linkse deugers die domme filmpjes maken, linkse deugers die ons drinkwater af willen pakken, falende D66-ministers of liegende oud-NPO-bestuurders van de PVV zijn. Wij schrijven jou niet voor wat je moet vinden, wij schrijven alleen maar op wat we zelf vinden en als mensen ons alleen maar financieel willen ondersteunen als we één specifieke mening over één specifiek onderwerp geven, dan hebben die mensen pech. 

Dat gezegd hebbende: geweldige mail, nu nog boos over moderatie van 15 jaar geleden, dat is volhouden, dat is mentaliteit tonen, ga zo door.

Ongezien de tyfus en GROETJES!
