WASHINGTON (ANP) - De Amerikaanse president Donald Trump gaat de importheffing op auto's en vrachtwagens uit de Europese Unie verhogen naar 25 procent. Dat schrijft hij op zijn socialemediaplatform Truth Social. Hij meldt erbij dat hij de verhoging volgende week zal doorvoeren voor auto's en vrachtwagens die de Verenigde Staten binnenkomen.

ORBE (ANP) - Wielrenner Dorian Godon heeft zijn tweede zege geboekt in de Ronde van Romandië. De Franse kampioen van Ineos Grenadiers was na 176 kilometer de beste in een sprint van een uitgedund peloton. Hij versloeg Finn Fisher-Black uit Nieuw-Zeeland en Valentin Paret-Peintre uit Frankrijk. De Sloveense wereldkampioen en geletruidrager Tadej Pogacar werd vierde.

Godon won eerder deze week de proloog van de Zwitserse etappekoers. Dit is zijn vijfde overwinning van 2026.

De Ronde van Romandië duurt tot en met zondag. Zaterdag volgt een lastige bergetappe.

Paus Leo heeft Evelio Menjivar-Ayala benoemd tot bisschop in het Amerikaanse West Virginia. De 55-jarige geestelijke is volgens de krant The Washington Post een voormalige ongedocumenteerde migrant die in een kofferbak naar de VS is gesmokkeld. Hij had katholieken eerder al opgeroepen zich uit te spreken tegen de wijze waarop de Amerikaanse autoriteiten onder president Donald Trump optreden tegen migranten.

Leo, de eerste paus die in de VS is geboren, benoemde volgens nieuwssite Vatican News vier bisschoppen. Menjivar-Ayala komt oorspronkelijk uit El Salvador en wordt gezien als de eerste Salvadoraanse bisschop in de VS. De paus stelde verder ook Robert Boxie aan. Die geestelijke heeft zich eveneens kritisch uitgelaten over het beleid van de regering-Trump.

De benoemingen laten zien dat Leo bereid is bisschoppen aan te stellen die zich durven uit te spreken over onderwerpen die gevoelig liggen in Washington. Trump heeft eerder felle kritiek geuit op zijn landgenoot Leo.

Juriaan (echte naam bekend bij redactie) laat verder weten dat zijn dealer een positieve invloed op hem heeft: “Hij is mijn grootste supporter, het is daarom fijn om het juist van hem te horen”.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 has a cameo list more stuffed than the fashion cupboard at the film’s fictional Runway magazine. It runs the gamut from eye-poppingly famous (Lady Gaga, Donatella Versace, Naomi Campbell) to if-you-know-you-know industry famous (Tina Brown, say, or a host of supermodels familiar to anyone on the Paris front row) to “huh, how did they get there?” (Late Show bandleader Jon Batiste, or Chicken Shop Date’s Amelia Dimoldenberg, already on her second cameo of the year after a super-quick turn in an episode of Industry). Missing, though, is the one cameo everyone hoped for, the white – or should that be cerulean? – whale herself: Anna Wintour, Vogue top dog and heavy inspiration in the film for Meryl Streep’s formidable sadist-in-chief, Miranda Priestly.

Wintour, though absent from the original Devil Wears Prada, always hovered over proceedings – it’s said that a number of designers steered clear of cameo appearances in the first film for fear of offending her – and Wintour herself, though present at its premiere, always studiously avoided discussing the film. But in recent months there seems to have been a sudden thawing – fond words from Wintour about the film on the New Yorker podcast, then a shock appearance alongside Streep on a Vogue cover – prompting speculation that the be-fringed one might deign to appear in the sequel.

Cross-party group says closure of humanitarian unit will undermine monitoring of legal violations and arms exports

MPs have expressed alarm at the closure of the Foreign Office’s international humanitarian law unit, warning it “will impair the UK’s ability to anticipate, assess and respond to serious violations of international law across multiple contexts”.

News of the closure, revealed by the Guardian, was raised with Keir Starmer at prime minister’s questions this week by the independent MP for Dewsbury and Batley, Iqbal Mohamed. Starmer said the work would be undertaken by another team as part of a restructuring.

Scott Jennings, CNN’s most prominent pro-Trump commentator, was triggered into swearing at a fellow panelist on live television on Thursday night after being repeatedly pressed to name a single political concession the US had extracted from its war with Iran – and failing to answer.

The outburst came during NewsNight With Abby Phillip, where Jennings clashed with Adam Mockler, a 23-year-old commentator with the progressive MeidasTouch. When Mockler asked him to name a concrete gain from the conflict, Jennings responded with the party-line response that the conflict had a singular, clear purpose – preventing a theocratic regime from acquiring nuclear weapons – but Mockler shot back that the non-answer was itself an answer.
