The Black Archives heeft een nieuw archief in Amsterdam-Oost, op dezelfde plek waar het tien jaar geleden begon met een paar dozen en een boekenkast. Er is ook een nieuwe tentoonstelling: ‘Echoes of In*dependence’, waarin werk van kunstenaars uit Suriname, Guinee-Bissau, Congo en Kaapverdië bij elkaar is gebracht.

Het gaat om een advies van de advocaat-generaal, dat de Hoge Raad niet per se over hoeft te nemen. Claudia Lap, voorzitter van de raad van commissarissen van Vitesse, spreekt niettemin van een „belangrijk juridisch signaal”.

SKAGEN (ANP) - De vrijlating van bultrug Timmy lijkt vertraging op te hebben gelopen. Het schip dat de walvis vervoert, vaart op dit moment rondjes bij het noordelijkste punt van Denemarken, waar het vaartuig de Noordzee op zou moeten varen. De kapitein zei tegen de Duitse regionale omroep NDR dat die omweg nodig is vanwege de slechte weersomstandigheden.

De golven op de Noordzee zijn op dit moment tot 2 meter hoog. Het onstuimige water kan ertoe leiden dat Timmy verwondingen oploopt. Het schip met de bultrug vaart weer door als het weer rustiger wordt. Volgens de weerman van NDR zou dat vrijdagavond het geval kunnen zijn.

Het is niet bekend waar de reddingswerkers precies van plan zijn om Timmy te laten gaan. Hem nu alvast vrijlaten kan in ieder geval niet; dan bestaat de kans dat hij terugzwemt naar de Oostzee, waar hij eind maart vast kwam te zitten in ondiep water.

KRETA (ANP) - De Global Sumud Flotilla bevestigt op sociale media dat alle door Israël opgepakte activisten zijn vrijgelaten op het Griekse eiland Kreta, met uitzondering van twee mannen. Die personen zijn deel van de organisatie achter de poging om over zee humanitaire hulp naar Gaza te brengen.

Israël hield bij Kreta meer dan twintig schepen tegen en bracht naar eigen zeggen circa 175 opvarenden over naar een eigen schip. De Global Sumud Flotilla zei daarna dat het om 211 personen ging, maar inmiddels staat op de site van het initiatief dat 179 activisten, onder wie drie uit Nederland, waren "ontvoerd".

De Global Sumud Flotilla roept op tot de vrijlating van de twee laatste personen: de Spaans-Palestijnse Saif Abukeshek en de Braziliaan Thiago Ávila. De Israëlische krijgsmacht brengt ze naar Israël voor verhoor. Abukeshek wordt verdacht van banden met een terroristische organisatie en Ávila van illegale activiteiten.

You’ll need a large area and a sunny aspect, but this plant is a true delight when homegrown

If you read my recent piece about celeriac, you’ll know that I’m trying to make an effort to write about crops that I don’t actually grow myself – this is my next instalment. Unlike celeriac, which I don’t like, I don’t grow sweetcorn because I simply don’t have the right space and conditions. So if you’re fortunate to have the room and sunny aspect for it to thrive, I’m jealous. When freshly plucked and shucked, homegrown sweetcorn is beyond delightful.

As you might suspect, sweetcorn grows best during long, hot summers – so get your seeds started now as they’ll want some warmth to germinate (in a propagator ideally) and pleasant weather as they get growing. As with so many of the best summer crops, it likes fertile and moisture-retentive soil, and as much sun as the summer days have to offer. Seedlings more than 8cm tall are ready to be planted out, but resist putting your seedlings into the ground until the days are warm and the risk of frost is well passed. And keep some fleece handy to throw over them should the temperature drop unexpectedly.

Analysis finds real wages fell 12% since 2019, with inequality widening in the US beyond global levels

CEO pay increased 20 times faster than worker pay around the world in 2025, according to a new analysis from Oxfam and the International Trade Union Confederation, the world’s largest trade union federation.

When adjusted for inflation, global worker pay declined 12% between 2019 and 2025, the equivalent of 108 days of free work during that time period. In comparison, CEO compensation increased by 54% between 2019 and 2025.

Nigel Farage and Reform are campaigning around the country in the local elections and consistently polling higher than the other parties. Reform’s campaign started with a series of rallies for supporters and candidates, where they asked attenders who were not already members to join the party and put their names forward as candidates. Now Farage is on a busy schedule of walkabouts and meet-ups with prospective councillors and supporters around the country.
