About a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) passed through the strait of Hormuz, a strip of sea less than 30 miles wide at its narrowest point, before it was in effect closed by the US-Israeli attack on Iran, which sent the price of oil soaring and left an estimated 20,000 seafarers on 2,000 vessels stranded.

Their plight has shone a spotlight on the complex and dirty relationship between shipping and the fossil fuel industry. The sector is one of the most polluting, with most ship engines fuelled by what has been called the dregs of the oil refining process, heavy and carbon-intensive diesel too filthy for any other purpose. Shipping produces about 3% of global greenhouse gases, a portion set to rise as trade globalises further.

Essa Suleiman charged after two men stabbed in north London, say police

Essa Suleiman has been charged with attempted murder after two Jewish men were stabbed in Golders Green, north London, the Metropolitan police has said.

The 45-year-old has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a bladed article in a public place over the incident, police said.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Winkeliers hebben in maart duidelijk meer omgezet dan in dezelfde maand vorig jaar. Van een mogelijke 'shopdip' door geschrokken reacties op de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten was dus absoluut geen sprake, volgt uit cijfers van het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS).

De detailhandel heeft in maart 2,9 procent meer omgezet dan in maart 2025, meldt het CBS. Daarmee lieten de verkopen vorige maand een sterkere toename zien dan in de eerste twee maanden van het jaar. Het verkoopvolume was 3,4 procent hoger.

Onder meer winkels in meubels en woninginrichting deden het goed, met 6 procent meer omzet dan in maart 2025. In zijn geheel ging de omzet in de non-food met 3,6 procent omhoog. Supermarkten lieten daarnaast een plus zien van 2 procent, terwijl de onlineomzet 7,7 procent is toegenomen.

Het CBS meldde donderdag al dat huishoudens in het eerste kwartaal evenveel consumeerden als een kwartaal eerder. Er ging meer geld naar kleding en voedingsmiddelen, maar minder naar vervoersmiddelen en brandstoffen.

BONN (ANP) - De Duitse brandweer stuurt vrijdag 21 voertuigen met 67 mensen naar Nederland om te helpen bij het blussen van de natuurbranden. De gespecialiseerde eenheden komen uit de steden Düsseldorf, Leverkusen, Bonn, Königswinter en Ratingen.

Het konvooi bestaat uit zowel brandweermensen als ondersteuners. Het is nog niet bekend waar ze worden ingezet, maar waarschijnlijk gaan de Duitsers eerst naar Oirschot in Noord-Brabant. Daar woedt sinds donderdag een brand op een militair oefenterrein. Ongeveer 65 hectare natuur is verbrand. Het vuur is sinds donderdagavond onder controle, maar het nablussen is nog gaande.

Nederland heeft voor het eerst om hulp uit het buitenland gevraagd bij het bestrijden van natuurbranden. De Duitse brandweer heeft in de afgelopen jaren geholpen bij bosbranden in Griekenland, Frankrijk en Spanje. Ook Frankrijk stuurt ondersteuning en de Belgische brandweer heeft donderdag geholpen bij het bestrijden van een natuurbrand in de buurt van Weert en Budel.

Justitie verdenkt een man van 33 van het voorbereiden van een aanslag op prinses Amalia en prinses Alexia, in februari van dit jaar. Dat schrijft de NOS

Komende maandag is de eerste inleidende zitting in zijn zaak voor de rechtbank in Den Haag.

De verdachte zou in het bezit zijn geweest van twee bijlen met daarin gekerfd de woorden Alexia, Mossad en Sieg Heil. Ook zou hij een handgeschreven tekst hebben gehad met de woorden Amalia, Alexia en Bloedbad.

Eerder bedreigd

Hoe concreet het plan voor een aanslag was, is niet duidelijk. Ook is nog niets duidelijk over zijn motief. Mogelijk wordt daar maandag meer over bekend.

Amalia kreeg eerder met bedreigingen te maken. Daardoor kon zij in 2022 niet op kamers gaan wonen in Amsterdam. Later werd bekend dat ze vanwege de dreiging in Madrid was gaan studeren en daar woonde

An anonymous reader quotes a report from CNBC: Elon Musk wrapped up his testimony on Thursday as the trial in his lawsuit against OpenAI CEO Sam Altman continued into its fourth day. OpenAI's attorney, William Savitt, cross-examined Musk in the morning. He asked Musk about the capped nature of Microsoft's investments in OpenAI, his involvement in negotiations about the company's structure, and whether he knew about the OpenAI nonprofit's recent initiatives. "I don't know what's going on at OpenAI," Musk testified.

Savitt also asked Musk about his competing artificial intelligence startup, xAI. While not the main focus of the case, Musk said it is "partly" true that xAI used some of OpenAI's models to train its own models, a process known as distilling. Musk also suggested that xAI has used OpenAI's technology to help build the company. Musk sued OpenAI, Altman, and Greg Brockman, the company's president, in 2024, alleging that they went back on their commitments to keep the artificial intelligence company a nonprofit and to follow its charitable mission. He claims that the roughly $38 million he donated to seed OpenAI, a company he co-founded, was used for unauthorized commercial purposes.

Once Musk wrapped up his testimony after roughly two hours of questioning on Thursday, his attorneys called Jared Birchall, who manages Musk's billions at his family office, as their next witness. Birchall testified about his knowledge of Musk's specific donations to OpenAI. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers oversaw the proceedings from federal court in Oakland, California.
