Ron Takeda and Tavis Boise were a few miles off the coast of Santa Barbara when they noticed the large mass trailing behind them.
“Tavis, is it a dolphin?” asked Takeda as he stood on his foil board, a specialized form of surfing, propelling himself through the waves. Boise, who was filming their run, recognized the question as an ominous sign – the veteran surfers are familiar enough with dolphins that Takeda should have recognized one immediately.

Surrounded by sheer moss-covered cliffs, craggy boulders and primeval forest, the water in Yasui Gorge is so clear that you can see the stones on the riverbed. This is considered one of the best places to see the water glow a shade called “Niyodo Blue,” a deep turquoise color that looks almost unreal.
The gorge stretches for about 10 km and offers several highlights, such as the Mikaeri no Taki and Hiryu no Taki waterfalls, and Suishobuchi (“crystal deep”) where the water pool glows like crystals in various shades of deep blue.
Yasui Gorge is one of the major spots in Kochi for viewing autumn foliage, as the red and golden leaves contrast dramatically with the bright blue of the river.
