BUDEL (ANP) - Het asielzoekerscentrum in Budel wordt donderdag volledig ontruimd omdat in het gebied een grote natuurbrand woedt. In de voormalige kazerne zitten 1500 asielzoekers. Het is nog niet bekend waar zij naartoe worden gebracht en hoe lang ze daar moeten blijven.
ROME (ANP/AFP) - Italië heeft Israël opgeroepen de Italiaanse opvarenden van de Global Summud Flotilla onmiddellijk vrij te laten. Die internationale hulpvloot die koerste op Gaza, werd in de nacht van woensdag op donderdag door de Israëlische marine niet ver van Kreta omsingeld, waarna Israël naar eigen zeggen 175 opvarenden arresteerde. Volgens de organisatie gaat het om 211 opvarenden die zijn "gekidnapt".
De Italiaanse premier Giorgia Meloni had donderdag overleg met haar minister van Defensie en van Buitenlandse Zaken over het voorval, waarbij volgens de organisatie 24 Italianen werden gearresteerd. In de verklaring van de Italiaanse overheid die volgde, wordt naast de oproep tot vrijlating ook gevraagd om "volledig respect voor het internationaal recht en garanties voor de fysieke veiligheid van de opvarenden".
In beelden die Israël donderdag vrijgaf, is volgens het land te zien hoe de arrestanten zich zouden vermaken tijdens hun arrest en tocht naar Israël.
Ook Spanje sprak zich later op de dag uit tegen de arrestaties. De Israëlische zaakgelastigde in Madrid is ontboden om uitleg te geven over de arrestatie van Spaanse opvarenden. De Spaanse diplomatieke missie in Israël staat in contact met de flotilla-organisatie.
Rijke landen proberen van hun plasticafval af te komen door het naar armere landen te exporteren. Duitsland was in 2025 ’s werelds grootste exporteur. Het land voerde meer dan 810.000 ton uit. Het Verenigd Koninkrijk volgde met ruim 675.000 ton, het hoogste niveau in acht jaar. Nederland is geen haar beter en zit daar vlak onder.
Een aanzienlijk deel van dit afval belandt in landen als Turkije, Maleisië en Indonesië. Daar is de verwerkingscapaciteit vaak beperkt, met milieuvervuiling, illegale dumping en slechte arbeidsomstandigheden als gevolg. De Turkse marien bioloog Sedat Gündoğdu spreekt van een “ernstig vervuilde Middellandse Zeekust”, waar microplastics het zwemmen soms onmogelijk maken.
Opvallend is dat grotere economieën zoals de Verenigde Staten en China relatief minder exporteren. Zij verwerken een groter deel van hun afval binnenlands, via stortplaatsen, verbranding of recycling. Europese landen daarentegen tellen export mee in hun recyclingdoelen, wat de prikkel vergroot om afval buiten de grenzen te verwerken.
De Europese Unie wil daar verandering in brengen. Vanaf november 2026 geldt een verbod op export van plastic afval naar niet-OESO-landen. Toch gaat momenteel nog ongeveer de helft van het Europese plastic naar dergelijke bestemmingen. Critici vrezen dat de stroom simpelweg verschuift naar landen binnen de OESO met beperkte capaciteit, zoals Turkije en delen van Oost-Europa.
Europarlementariër Sara Matthieu noemt het verbod een “keerpunt”, maar waarschuwt dat de Europese recyclingcapaciteit recent met 1 miljoen ton is afgenomen. “Nieuwe plastics zijn nog altijd goedkoper dan gerecyclede materialen”, stelt ze. “Dat marktfalen wordt onvoldoende aangepakt.”
In het Verenigd Koninkrijk, waar wetgeving rond plasticexport nog in consultatie is, ging in 2025 circa een vijfde van het afval naar niet-OESO-landen. De export naar Maleisië nam zelfs met 60 procent toe. Activist Pua Lay Peng spreekt van “afvalkolonialisme”.
Hoewel strengere regels en digitale tracking worden ingevoerd, vinden milieuorganisaties dat deze maatregelen tekortschieten. Volgens de Environmental Investigation Agency blijft het kernprobleem overeind: de enorme productie van plastic. Zolang die niet afneemt, zal afval zijn weg blijven vinden naar kwetsbare regio’s.

Last week, Parks and Recreation star, and most importantly Megan Mullally’s husband, Nick Offerman, was asked on Amy Poehler’s podcast what he’s been laughing at recently. He revealed he has been loving the Australian comedy Colin from Accounts. A few days later, during promo for The Devil Wears Prada 2, award-winning actor and the Princess of Genovia herself, Anne Hathaway, also said she loves Colin from Accounts (maybe less surprising given it features her DWP2 co-star).
In both those instances, I felt an unfamiliar sense of national pride. I’m genuinely excited to see an Australian TV comedy getting its flowers like this. Not because it means it will get more American viewers, but because it’s external validation that the comedy we make in this country can be excellent. We can be world class – if we are given the chance.

If you want to tell the tale of a young James Bond, you first need to pick which James Bond he’s going to grow into. This was the task handed to Hitman developer IO Interactive, the studio taking digital custody of the spy in 007 First Light, Bond’s first video game in almost 15 years. So what’s it to be? Will their agent take baby steps towards Sean Connery’s gruff masculinity, or is he practising Roger Moore’s arched eyebrow in the bathroom mirror? That’s if he’s a “movie” Bond at all. For a generation of gamers, the character exists most vividly as a hand at the bottom of the screen in GoldenEye 007.
As it turns out, 007 First Light’s Bond, depicted by Patrick Gibson (cornering a specific market, having played the serial killer-to-be in the Dexter origins show) is an amalgam: the facial scar is an Ian Fleming detail, but the sweet-talking charm is straight from the Pierce Brosnan playbook, and the second you barge a goon into a bookcase you know someone’s been studying Casino Royale on a loop. Trying to devise a Bond for all fandoms could risk satisfying none, but in the demo we played, the performance works. Crucially, Gibson brings an outsider’s unease that’s all his own, anchored by the arrogance that’ll one day be weaponised by MI6.
