Sarah Island, Macquarie Harbour, Tasmania

Sarah Island is Tasmania's oldest convict settlement and reputedly one of the severest penal establishments in the history of transportation to Australia. Flogging was frequently used as a punishment and more than 180 escape attempts were made.

Remotely located, the island sits in the southern part of Macquarie Harbour on Tasmania's west coast. Despite its isolation and grim function, Sarah Island was for a time the largest shipbuilding yard in the colonies. Convicts were also put to work in the thriving pining trade.

Towards the end of the 19th century the haunting ruins and natural beauty of Sarah Island became popular with tourists. The island was gazetted as a tourist reserve in 1926 and nearly 50 years later as an historic site. Today it is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and Macquarie Harbour Historic Site. Cruise boats depart from Strahan and operate guided tours of the island. Visitors can use a map to navigate among the many ruins to locate the 'new' penitentiary, the commandant's slipway, the bakehouse and tannery.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Het plan om hulp aan mensen die illegaal in Nederland zijn te bestraffen, was "overhaast" en "gericht op symboolpolitiek". Dat zegt de Haagse vluchtelingenwethouder Mariëlle Vavier. De meerderheid van de Kamer, die voor de strafbaarstelling stemde, had volgens haar geen oog "voor wat dit betekent in de levens van de mensen voor wie wij een zorgplicht hebben en de hulpverleners die daar onmisbaar bij zijn".

De Raad van State kwam vrijdag met een kritisch oordeel over de maatregel, waar de Tweede Kamer begin juli mee instemde. De Eerste Kamer moet zich er nog over uitspreken, maar daar lijkt na de inbreng van de RvS geen meerderheid voor te zijn.

Als het wel strafbaar zou worden om mensen te helpen die illegaal in Nederland zijn, voelen gemeenten volgens Vavier als eerste de negatieve gevolgen. Zo'n regel zou onder meer consequenties hebben voor "de winterkouderegeling en dagopvang voor dakloze mensen, en de werkzaamheden van maatschappelijke organisaties", aldus de wethouder.

Een 45-jarige Turkse man is aangehouden in Nederland omdat hij deel zou uitmaken van een groep die van plan was om paus Franciscus te vermoorden, zo meldt de Italiaanse politie aan persbureau ANSA. Details over de aanhouding zijn niet gegeven. De man is inmiddels overgeleverd aan Italië.

De aanslag op de vorige paus had in juli vorig jaar moeten plaatsvinden bij zijn bezoek aan de Italiaanse stad Triëst. De verdachte is lid van een Turkse organisatie die gelieerd is aan ISIS Khorasan. Deze Afghaanse tak van terreurgroep Islamitische Staat zou achter het aanslagplan zitten. Volgens de Italiaanse krant Il Piccolo is er een verband tussen de man en een wapen dat was achtergelaten in een koffer in de bar van een treinstation. Het pistool werd een dag voor het bezoek van de paus ontdekt.

Na zijn overlevering zat de man enkele dagen in een cel in Milaan. Inmiddels zit hij in eenzame opsluiting in Triëst, de Italiaanse havenstad bij de grens met Slovenië.
