BREDA (ANP) - De Havermarkt in het centrum van Breda is vol. Dat meldt de gemeente Breda. Voor het plein geldt het principe: één persoon in, één persoon uit. Aan de Haven, Sint Janstraat, op het Kasteelplein en op het Kerkplein is nog wel ruimte om Koningsdag te vieren.

Op het Chasséveld, nabij de Havermarkt, vindt het grote muziekfestival 538 Koningsdag plaats.

Ook in Utrecht begint het druk te worden. Vooral bij de Asch van Wijckskade in het centrum ziet de gemeente steeds meer mensen. In Eindhoven is het "gezellig druk" en er is een rustige sfeer, meldt een woordvoerder van de gemeente.

UTRECHT (ANP) - Het Stadhuisplein en Oudkerkhof in de binnenstad van Utrecht zijn vol, meldt de gemeente. Er mogen geen nieuwe mensen de pleinen op. Ook op de Neude en het Janskerkhof wordt het erg druk.

Op het Domplein en Vredenburg is wel nog ruimte voor feestvierders.

MADRID (ANP) - Tennisster Aryna Sabalenka heeft de kwartfinale van het toernooi in Madrid bereikt. De Belarussische nummer 1 van de wereld kwam terug van een achterstand en was in drie sets uiteindelijk te sterk voor de Japanse Naomi Osaka: 6-7 (1), 6-3, 6-2.

In de kwartfinale treft ze de Amerikaanse Hailey Baptiste, die de Zwitserse Belinda Bencic in drie sets versloeg: 6-1, 6-7 (14/16), 6-3.

PARAMARIBO (ANP) - De staat Suriname, KLM en IATA-reisagenten moeten binnen twee weken evalueren of de commissie op ticketverkoop door Surinaamse reisbureaus moet worden aangepast. Dat heeft de rechter in Paramaribo maandag bepaald in het kort geding dat de luchtvaartmaatschappij in februari aanspande tegen de staat Suriname. Sinds 2008 zijn luchtvaartmaatschappijen verplicht om 6 procent per ticket te betalen aan reisagenten in Suriname. KLM had gevraagd om verlaging of volledige afschaffing van de commissie.

De Surinaamse regering bepaalde eind 2007 in een staatsbesluit dat de minimumcommissie 6 procent bedroeg, om daarmee de bestaanszekerheid van de reisagenten te garanderen. De kantonrechter erkent dat de staat onrechtmatig heeft gehandeld tegen KLM door het percentage niet van tijd tot tijd aan te passen.

REDMOND (ANP/BLOOMBERG) - Microsoft en ChatGPT-maker OpenAI passen hun samenwerking aan. Het techbedrijf heeft aangegeven dat het partnerschap met het belangrijke AI-bedrijf voortaan niet meer exclusief zal zijn en dat afspraken over het delen van inkomsten veranderen.

"Het snelle innovatietempo vereist dat we onze samenwerking blijven ontwikkelen ten gunste van onze klanten en beide bedrijven", schrijft Microsoft in een blogpost.

De twee bedrijven werken sinds 2019 samen. Vorig jaar nog kreeg Microsoft een belang van 27 procent in het bedrijf achter de populaire AI-chatbot ChatGPT.

Microsoft blijft de belangrijkste cloudpartner van OpenAI, benadrukt het techbedrijf. Ook blijft Microsoft tot 2032 toegang houden tot technologie van OpenAI, maar die licentie is niet langer exclusief. In ruil voor het beëindigen van die exclusiviteit veranderen ook de afspraken over het delen van inkomsten.

LONDEN (ANP/RTR) - Het Britse parlement stemt dinsdag over een mogelijk onderzoek naar premier Keir Starmer, meldt de parlementsvoorzitter. Uit dat onderzoek zou moeten blijken of Starmer het Lagerhuis bewust of onbewust heeft misleid bij het aanstellen van Peter Mandelson als ambassadeur in de Verenigde Staten.

Eerder deze maand bleek dat Mandelson niet door een screening van de Britse veiligheidsdienst kwam voordat hij werd aangesteld. Het is niet duidelijk of dat te maken had met de banden van Mandelson met de beruchte zedendelinquent Jeffrey Epstein, wat ook de reden was voor zijn latere ontslag in september. Het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken zou het negatieve advies hebben genegeerd. Starmer zei daar eerder niet van op de hoogte te zijn geweest.

Eerder werd Starmer ook al onder druk gezet om af te treden vanwege zijn besluit om Mandelson aan te stellen. Topambtenaar Olly Robbins, die Starmer had moeten informeren over Mandelson, werd ontslagen vanwege de kwestie.

I especially like the analysis of what went wrong with Woke 1, starting with its method of, as Hancox-Li calls it, "excavation": Woke 1 adopted a different engine of cultural change, what I will call the "excavation." One of the most common sights in cities is birds perched on power lines, although it rarely elicits a second look. Starlings chortle, pigeons coo, and the occasional hawk perches on a pole to scan the ground for its next meal. And yet, as normal as this seems, there’s nothing natural about it. Instead of trees, these feathered creatures rely on whatever infrastructure is around them, from wires and pylons to fences and rooftops.

For Ohio-based artist Rachel Mentzer, nature’s resilience is central to a practice focused on sustainability and environmental renewal. Her work “invites viewers to reflect on the interplay between human activity and the natural world, emphasizing the adaptability and fragility of nature,” says a statement.

Mentzer’s practice emphasizes collagraphy, an intaglio printmaking technique in which flattened materials—especially paper and card but also other items like leaves or acrylic surfaces—can be used to create a plate from which to make prints. She meticulously carves the delicate surfaces of found cartons with motifs of birds, trees, and energy infrastructure, then brushes them in polyurethane to preserve and prepare them for printing. Occasionally, she also employs chine collé, which uses delicate papers, to add colorful backgrounds.

The artist then coats the design with ink, wipes off the excess, and places the damp substrate into an etching press to transfer the image to a larger sheet of paper, producing the final piece. Thanks to the pressure of the transfer and the way the ink seeps into every handmade and incidental mark, the final print reveals a textural composition with crisp outlines. Birds and urban details alike are inextricable from the silhouette of a material that may have otherwise been destined for the landfill, summoning a constant reminder of the relationship between humans and nature.
