Researchers from the University of Turku, in collaboration with Aalto University and Wageningen University, have developed a bio-based UV protection film for solar cells that not only blocks nearly all harmful ultraviolet light but also outperforms commercial plastic films. The key ingredient is a water extract made from red onion skins...

[T]he same sunlight that powers [solar cells] can also degrade their delicate components — particularly the electrolyte inside dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), a type known for their flexibility and low-light performance. To mitigate this, manufacturers typically wrap cells in UV-protective films made from petroleum-based plastics like polyethylene terephthalate (PET). But these plastics degrade over time and are difficult to recycle... Nanocellulose can be processed into thin, transparent films that serve as the perfect substrate for UV-blocking compounds.

Their breakthrough came when they dyed these films using an extract from red onion skins, a common kitchen waste. The result was a filter that blocked 99.9% of UV radiation up to 400 nanometers, a feat that outstripped even the PET-based commercial filters chosen for comparison... [T]he onion-treated filter excelled: it let through over 80% of light in the 650-1,100 nm range — an ideal sweet spot for energy absorption... Even predictive modeling based on early degradation trends suggested the CNF-ROE filter could extend a solar cell's lifetime to roughly 8,500 hours. The PET-based filter? Just 1,500 hours... [T]he red onion extract offered a rare combination of longevity, transparency, and sustainability...
The team envisions biodegradable solar cells for smart packaging, remote sensors, or wearable devices — especially in applications where recovery and recycling are not feasible. Their work is part of the BioEST project, funded by the Research Council of Finland, which supports sustainable innovation across electronics and materials science. This achievement taps into a broader movement to decarbonize every step of solar energy production. Plastic packaging is one of the overlooked sources of emissions in clean technology. Swapping out fossil-based plastics for biodegradable alternatives helps close that loop...

It never ceases to surprise me at how large some of the cathedrals and churches in our large regional cities and towns are. So slow was the construction and completion of Brisbane's Church of England/Anglican Cathedral, that many of these regional churches, in size and in particular, architecture were way ahead of it. This is Rockhampton, Queensland's St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Cathedral and a magnificent structure it is.

Rockhampton is no stranger to wonderful heritage buildings. Unexpected for Queensland, the city has the longest heritage listed street in Australia and at just on two kilometres, Quay Street along the river and even adjacent streets are packed full of fascinating old and beautiful structures.

AMSTERDAM (ANP) - De gemeente Amsterdam moet voor de rechter verschijnen omdat inwoners vinden dat de stad niet genoeg doet tegen massatoerisme. Het burgerinitiatief Amsterdam heeft een Keuze heeft in de afgelopen maanden 50.000 euro opgehaald bij inwoners van de stad en dagvaardt met steun van twaalf andere bewonersorganisaties maandag de gemeente.

In 2021 stelde de gemeente met een verordening het maximum aantal toeristische overnachtingen in de stad vast op 20 miljoen per jaar. Desondanks waren er vorig jaar 22,9 miljoen toeristische overnachtingen, en dat aantal stijgt nog steeds. De initiatiefnemers van de rechtszaak vinden dat de gemeente zich niet aan de regels houdt en dat er te weinig gebeurt om het aantal toeristen in de stad te verminderen. "De overnachtingen zijn al drie jaar boven de afgesproken 20 miljoen zonder dat de gemeente effectieve maatregelen heeft genomen", aldus Jasper van Dijk, een van de initiatiefnemers.

De gemeente nam wel maatregelen, maar die zijn volgens de initiatiefnemers niet effectief genoeg. Zo werd de toeristenbelasting verhoogd en het aantal rivier- en zeecruises gehalveerd. Ook is er een verbod op de bouw van nieuwe hotels. In mei werd bekend dat het toerisme in Amsterdam nog steeds groeit, al is het minder hard dan voorheen.

Amsterdam kent met 12,5 procent de hoogste toeristenbelasting in Europa. Toch vinden de initiatiefnemers dat die belasting opnieuw fors omhoog moet. "Amsterdam zou de vele extra inkomsten uit verhoogde toeristenbelasting kunnen gebruiken om panden op te kopen om te helpen met het woningtekort of de stad vrij te maken van de rommel op straat die mede door het massatoerisme is ontstaan", stelt Van Dijk. "Als de gemeente de forse verhoging van de toeristenbelasting doorvoert, levert dat meer op dan de kosten van alle plannen van de afgelopen Amsterdamse coalitieakkoorden bij elkaar opgeteld."

ROESELARE (ANP) - In de Belgische plaats Roeselare zijn zondag drie mensen omgekomen bij afzonderlijke steekpartijen. De vermoedelijke dader is zondagavond rond 23.00 uur opgepakt in het nabijgelegen Izegem, meldt het parket van West-Vlaanderen.

Onder de slachtoffers zijn een man van 45 en een vrouw van 43 jaar oud. De vermoedelijke dader vluchtte weg, maar na een intensieve klopjacht werd hij zondagavond opgepakt bij het station van Izegem. Over de toedracht van de feiten heeft het parket nog niets bekendgemaakt.

Roeselare en Izegem liggen tussen Brugge en Kortrijk.
