Journals Infiltrated With 'Copycat' Papers That Can Be Written By AI

An analysis of a literature database finds that text-generating AI tools -- including ChatGPT and Gemini -- can be used to rewrite scientific papers and produce 'copycat' versions that are then passed off as new research. Nature: In a preprint posted on medRxiv on 12 September, researchers identified more than 400 such papers published in 112 journals over the past 4.5 years, and demonstrated that AI-generated biomedicine studies could evade publishers' anti-plagiarism checks.

The study's authors warn that individuals and paper mills -- companies that produce fake papers to order and sell authorships -- might be exploiting publicly available health data sets and using large language models (LLMs) to mass-produce low-quality papers that lack scientific value.

"If left unaddressed, this AI-based approach can be applied to all sorts of open-access databases, generating far more papers than anyone can imagine," says Csaba Szabo, a pharmacologist at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, who was not involved in the work. "This could open up Pandora's box [and] the literature may be flooded with synthetic papers."

Pope Leo XIV Rejects AI Avatar for Virtual Papal Audiences

Pope Leo XIV declined to authorize an AI avatar that would have provided virtual papal audiences to Catholics worldwide. The first American pontiff rejected the proposal during an interview with papal biographer Elise Allen. "Someone recently asked authorization to create an artificial me so that anybody could sign onto this website and have a personal audience with 'the Pope,'" he said. "This artificial intelligence Pope would give them answers to their questions, and I said, 'I'm not going to authorize that.'"

The Pope expressed broader concerns about AI's societal impact. He warned that automation could leave only a few people able to live meaningful lives while others merely survive. These concerns influenced his papal name choice, taking inspiration from Pope Leo XIII, who authored Rerum novarum addressing workers' rights during the Industrial Revolution. Leo XIV maintained he isn't opposed to technological innovation but believes links between faith, humanity, and science must be preserved.

Microsoft Brings Microfluidics To Datacenter Cooling With 3X Performance Gain

Microsoft has successfully tested a microfluidic cooling system that removed heat up to three times better than cold plates currently used in datacenters. The technology etches tiny channels directly into silicon chips, allowing cooling liquid to flow directly onto the heat source. In lab tests announced September 23, 2025, the system reduced the maximum temperature rise inside GPUs by 65%. The channels, roughly the width of human hair, were optimized using AI to create bio-inspired patterns resembling leaf veins.

Microsoft collaborated with Swiss startup Corintis on the design. The cooling fluid can operate at temperatures as high as 70C (158F) while maintaining effectiveness. The company demonstrated the technology on servers running Microsoft Teams services, where the improved cooling enables overclocking during demand spikes that occur when meetings start on the hour and half-hour. Microsoft is investigating incorporating microfluidics into future generations of its first-party chips as the company plans to spend over $30 billion on capital expenditures this quarter.

In late September 2025 I became aware that Google Gemini Ai engine had enabled image editing. This is my first foray into using its capability and I am reasonably pleased with the result. The original image was dull, taken later in the afternoon on a cloudy day. Strong shadowing on the vegetation also needed adjustment. There were also lots of people on the beach and two vertical sign posts present which I asked to be removed. Gemini did initially have problems cropping a black section from the bottom right corner but that may have been my inability to correctly articulate what I wanted done. After two written requests though it did correctly clone and removed it.
I have very basic understanding of of the processes and terminology that Gemini recognises so that is perhaps a learning curve.Presumably if one can articulate what you want done to the photo in terms the Ai can understand then potentially the sky is the limit.
While it seems to be a more time consuming process than editing in an app like Luminar Neo maybe it’s worth playing around with, at least for some creative fun.

Raul De Lara’s Whimsical Wooden Sculptures Defy Borders

Raul De Lara’s Whimsical Wooden Sculptures Defy Borders

Why can plants be considered native to more than one nation while people can’t? This line of inquiry grounds a large-scale exhibition by Raul De Lara in which he presents his surreal sculptures that merge flora and furnishings.

HOST, on view now at The Contemporary Austin, brings together a collection of works that call into question belonging and identity and rejects the idea that state borders are fixed and natural. Using wood endemic to Texas and Mexico, De Lara sculpts potted monsteras sprouting from chains, a schooldesk covered in long spines, and a cactus disguised as a child’s rocking horse.

The resulting pieces translate what should be a common object—a shovel, for example, or an enormous cluster of daisies in a vase—into the strange and uncanny. Many works are also rendered unusable, including a spiked ladder even the bravest among us would hesitate to climb.

Now based in Ridgewood, Queens, De Lara grew up near Austin as a child of Mexican immigrants. He first learned woodoworking in his family’s shop, which he describes as “a world where each tool has its own language, each piece of wood shows the passing of time on its skin, and where one is able to communicate through their hands.” A strong belief in animism, luck, and the paranormal pervaded this sacred space and taught the budding artist that he could harness the energy of a particular material to create beautiful objects.

Today, he sees woodworking as a mode of storytelling, one in which magical realism flourishes. “I welcome the idea that artworks can hold their own spark of life and extend it to us,” De Lara says, adding:

When I make my work, I remember childhood memories of when I would see local carvers turn branches into saints. I always wondered at what point in
the carving process does the ghost enters that piece of wood. I strive to make works that invite a certain kind of trust and acceptance from the viewer, that let them live without our realm.

As global concerns about immigration and human rights intensify, De Lara’s work is all the more relevant. The artist has DACA status and knows firsthand the precarity and swift change that comes with a new administration.

His sculptures capture a sense of whimsy and play that might seem in opposition to this reality, but for De Lara, woodworking, and traditional craft more broadly, is a superpower. “It cannot be taken away from you as it is not tied to location, politics, or laws. You carry it with you and can practice anywhere, with anyone, and oftentimes, it disarms differences amongst us,” he says.

See HOST through January 11, 2026. Keep up with De Lara’s work on Instagram.
