Hee daar hebben we stichting Stichting Al-Andalous weer, bestierd door een islamdocent uit Veenendaal die met enige regelmaat behoorlijk boos is. Zo is hij nu ook weer: behoorlijk boos. Meer specifiek op Nieuwsuur, dat na negen maanden onderzoek concludeert dat "Verschillende reformatorische en islamitische scholen bepaalde boodschappen uitdragen die botsen met democratische waarden als gelijkheid en verdraagzaamheid." Uitzending hier te kijken; dat had Stichting Al-Andalous nog niet gedaan, maar dat weerhield hen er niet van vast een haatcampagne tegen Nieuwsuur-journalist Milena Holdert te beginnen. "Het is moeilijk om een direct bewijs te vinden dat Milena Holdert bewust anti-islam te werk gaat of samenwerkt met bepaalde partijen. Toch valt er iets op in de manier waarop zij en haar collega’s moslims in beeld brengen. Moslims worden vaak in hokjes geplaatst, er worden telkens verbanden gelegd met “extreem” of met één bepaalde leer binnen de islam en de timing van de reportages maakt dit des te opvallender." Dan murmelen deze complotdenkers dat Holdert eerder twee dergelijke uitzendingen maakte, "steeds vlak voor nationale verkiezingen", in respectievelijk september 2019 en september 2021. Dat is op zich al een beetje maf. Misschien weet Stichting Al-Andalous niet precies wat verkiezingen zijn, maar in 2019 waren er in ieder geval geen Tweede Kamer-verkiezingen, in 2020 ook niet, en in 2021 in maart. Anderhalf jaar na de eerste uitzending dus, en een half jaar voor de tweede. Ja noem ons maar raar maar wij zijn daar principieel in: iemand die te lui of dom is om twintig seconde te googlen mag geen online-lastercampagne tegen een journalist beginnen. Sowieso loont het de moeite om geen online-lastercampagnes tegen journalisten te beginnen, of wat dat betreft tegen andere burgers. Online-lastercampagnes zijn namelijk: stom.

Afijn. "Door steeds dezelfde onderwerpen uit te lichten, ontstaat een eenzijdig beeld: islamitische scholen als plekken van dreiging of extremisme," schrijft de Stichting. Dit is  helaas waar, maar heeft meer te maken met het feit dat islamitische scholen bovengemiddeld vaak broedplaatsen van dreiging of extremisme zijn dan met de vermeende bevooroordeeldheid van juffrouw Holdert. "Er is geen bewijs dat Milena Holdert zelf, of direct met Yoeri Vugts, een vergelijkbaar diepgaand onderzoek heeft gedaan naar christenen, joden of extreemrechts op de manier zoals zij dat doet met islamitische instellingen." Nou, meneertje, dit onderzoek is ook naar reformatorische scholen, dus wij zouden durven te beargumenteren dat er wel degelijk bewijs is dat Holdert ook onderzoek naar Christenen heeft gedaan.

"Holdert doet wel ander onderzoekswerk, zoals onderzoek naar de financiering van Syrische strijdgroepen en onderzoek naar de financiering van moskeeën door conservatieve Golfstaten. Opvallend is ook dat deze reportages direct worden opgepakt door partijen die al kritisch staan tegenover islamitische instellingen." Ja, opvallend, dat Islamcritici problemen binnen (delen van) de Islam aangrijpen voor hun Islamkritische agenda. Hier valt weinig tegenin te brengen; meneer is iets op het spoor. "Er is dus geen direct bewijs van anti-islam banden of afspraken met politieke partijen." Er is ook geen indirect bewijs, leeggezogen pakje Fristi, er is alleen een onzinberichtje op de Facebook-pagina van Stichting Al-Andalous. "Maar wie naar het patroon kijkt, ziet hoe de thema’s, de manier van schetsen en de timing telkens dezelfde richting op wijzen. Het beeld van moslims als “probleemgroep” wordt zo keer op keer herhaald. En dat dit net voor verkiezingen gebeurt, is niet onopgemerkt." Het is niet onopgemerkt, maar het is zoals hierboven aangegeven dus ook onjuist. "Tot slot." Bismillah, we naderen het einde. "We vragen ons oprecht af waar dit beleid vandaan komt, wat er achter zit en wat het uiteindelijke doel is. Door steeds dezelfde groep in het kwade daglicht te zetten, verdwijnt nuance en wordt verdeeldheid gevoed." Dit "beleid" heet journalistiek en het heeft als uiteindelijke doel om misstanden aan te tonen. Stichting Al-Andalous, drukker met het bejubelen van Hamas dan met het blootleggen laat staan tegengaan van deze misstanden, weet dit natuurlijk dondersgoed, sterker, zij is onderdeel van het probleem. Opbokken met deze gek(ken) dus.

Effective this week, Amazon shoppers who feel conflicted over Amazon’s treatment of their workers, impact on the environment, and negative effect on independent businesses can spend an additional $6.99 to have their purchases sent to them in Amazon logo-free boxes so no one knows they’re using Amazon. Not only will discreet packaging omit all signs of Amazon’s branding, but so will the Amazon drivers and vehicles tasked with delivering them, who will instead wear uniforms and drive trucks with decals bearing the names of mom-and-pop stores located within each customer’s respective area code. Even further, purchases from Amazon will appear as ‘SMALL COMMUNITY-MINDED BIPOC-OWNED BUSINESS’ on customers’ credit card statements in case users want to hide their Amazon habit from those with whom they share a bank account.

According to marketing researchers at Amazon, customers were more likely to push aside ethical concerns about giving their money to Jeff Bezos when presented with the option for discreet shipping, as it allowed them to receive all the benefits of using Amazon without having to reckon with their own values every time an Amazon driver rang their doorbell to drop off basic goods readily available at countless stores nearby. For the peace of mind that comes with making your neighbors think you’re the type of person who won’t capitulate to unchecked capitalism for convenience’s sake, that’s a pretty great bargain!

What a win-win for customers and Amazon alike! Ethical consumerism just got that much easier to signify, and we are so here for it. These days, it’s rare to see a company that cares about the customer experience in meaningful ways like this. Simply put, Amazon just raised the bar, and we’re about to start loading up our cart!

GENÈVE (ANP) - Het VN-comité voor economische, sociale en culturele rechten benadrukt zijn bezorgdheid over "de aanhoudende discriminatie van vluchtelingen en asielzoekers". Dat laat het weten in een rapport. De zorgen liggen met name bij de "toegang tot werk, huisvesting, sociale zekerheid en onderwijs" voor migranten.

Het comité is ook bezorgd over de kwetsbaarheid voor "uitbuiting, misleidende wervingspraktijken en ondermaatse woonomstandigheden" van migranten. De VN roepen Nederland op te zorgen voor effectieve bescherming van migranten en het toezicht van de arbeidsinspectie aan te scherpen.

Eerder uitten andere comités ook bezorgdheid over Nederlands beleid. Zo meldde in december 2023 een speciaal rapporteur na een bezoek aan Nederland dat de huisvestingscrisis ten onrechte wordt toegeschreven aan migranten, die juist vaak het grootste slachtoffer zijn. In 2024 herhaalde de UNHCR dat "het huidige opvangsysteem failliet is" en dat er "structurele verandering nodig is". Volgens de organisatie zou de spreidingswet hieraan bijdragen.

NEW YORK (ANP) - Het Nederlandse farmaciebedrijf Merus was maandag een opvallende winnaar op de aandelenbeurzen in New York. Het bedrijf uit Utrecht, dat is genoteerd aan de technologiebeurs Nasdaq, wordt voor 8 miljard dollar overgenomen door het Deense Genmab. De overnameprijs bedraagt 97 dollar per aandeel in contanten. De koers van Merus schoot in de vroege handel op Wall Street met ruim 37 procent omhoog.

Het in 2003 opgerichte Merus heeft sinds 2016 een notering aan de Nasdaq. Het bedrijf ontwikkelt een behandeling voor kanker in het hoofd-halsgebied. Sinds mei steeg de koers al flink nadat Merus bekendmaakte dat zijn experimentele geneesmiddel petosemtamab effectiever was dan de huidige standaardbehandeling bij het verkleinen van tumoren bij patiënten met hoofd-halskanker, wanneer het in combinatie met een ander middel, Keytruda, werd gebruikt.

De Dow-Jonesindex noteerde kort na opening 0,2 procent hoger op 46.343 punten. De brede S&P 500 steeg 0,4 procent tot 6669 punten en de Nasdaq won 0,7 procent tot 22.631 punten. Vrijdag sloten de hoofdgraadmeters nog met winst, waarmee een punt werd gezet achter drie verliesbeurten op rij.

Around 10,000 years ago, a paradigm shift in human history began to unfold. Prior to this transitional period, which archaeologists refer to as the Neolithic Revolution—the final phase of the Stone Age—small societies were organized around hunting and gathering for sustenance. During the Neolithic period, the gradual adoption of agricultural practices forever changed the way we live.

Over the next few thousand years, humans began domesticating plants and practicing animal husbandry in different parts of the world. And with less time needed for farming than for nomadically searching for food, ancient people could enjoy other activities that led to economic, political, religious, and artistic developments.

The Neolithic period saw the very first civilizations. It’s also when iconically old structures like Ireland’s Newgrange passage tomb and England’s Stonehenge complex were built, the latter of which was begun around 3100 B.C.E. and finished around 600 years later. For context, when Stonehenge was in its final phase, construction of the Pyramids of Giza was likely in progress. Recently, a series of circular earthworks dating to the 5th millennium B.C.E. (5000 to 4001 B.C.E.) in Burgenland, Austria, may predate much of Stonehenge by a remarkable 2,000 years.

At the newly excavated site, three monumental structures sit in close proximity to one another near the town of Rechnitz. The earthworks were initially discovered via aerial and geomagnetic surveys between 2011 and 2017. A total of four were found, three of which are ring-shaped structures that were previously invisible to the naked eye.

Known as circular ditch systems, the structures were built in the Middle Neolithic period—sometime between 4850 and 4500 B.C.E.—making them at least 6,500 years old.

“The Rechnitz site can be considered a supra-regional center of the Middle Neolithic period,” says Nikolaus Franz, the director of Burgenland Archaeology, in a statement. In the ditches measuring as much as 340 feet across, archaeologists have documented pits containing ceramic finds and post holes that indicate where timber beams in the ground once supported shelters.

Circular ditch monuments of this type, known as Kreisgrabenanlagen in German, are consistently found throughout Central Europe. While their intended function remains unknown, researchers generally believe they held an ancient religious, or cultic, purpose. Similar to Stonehenge, their orientation includes openings that align with the solstices and seem to correspond to an astronomical calendar.

“The excavations open a veritable window into the Stone Age,” Franz says. “We are learning a great deal about the Neolithic settler clans who found this a favorable location to establish the cultural techniques of agriculture and livestock farming in what is now Burgenland…After centuries of hunting and gathering, the gradual settlement of humans was truly revolutionary.”
