Former US president and New York mayor read to a group of children and led a sing-along at a Bronx childcare center

Barack Obama met with Zohran Mamdani for the first time on Saturday at a childcare center where the former Democratic US president and mayor of New York City read to preschoolers and led a sing-along.

The meeting comes as Mamdani, a democratic socialist who marked his 100th day in office just over a week earlier, is also trying to build a working relationship with Donald Trump – Obama’s Republican presidential successor.

Manchester City are unchanged, no surprise given their recent form. Mikel Arteta has made two changes to the side that drew against Sporting in midweek: Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz replace Gabriel Martinelli and Viktor Gyokeres. That means Arsenal have a few options in midfield, but the likeliest scenario is that Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze will play as the wide attackers.

After deadly 2023 fires, recent storms and ICE raids, Lahaina residents are determined to rebuild the town for their community

In March, Hawaii was hit with two back-to-back storms, bringing the worst flooding it’s seen in 20 years. In Lahaina, Maui, muddy flood waters turned streets into rivers and carved new paths through the barren landscape, breaking open roads and flooding houses. In their wake, sinkholes appeared, engulfing cars.

This is nearly three years after the deadliest wildfires in US history ravaged Lahaina, destroying more than 2,000 structures and killing more than 100 people. Hundreds of affected households are still in temporary housing. Poverty, unemployment and housing instability, rife before the fires, have only worsened.

Spanje gaat de Europese Unie dinsdag vragen het associatieverdrag met Israël te beëindigen vanwege schendingen van het internationaal recht. Dat heeft premier Pedro Sánchez gezegd tijdens een bijeenkomst in Andalusië.

Spanje is al langer kritisch op de regering van premier Benjamin Netanyahu, vanwege het conflict in Gaza en de Israëlische aanvallen op Iran en Libanon.

Sánchez zei dat Israël "het internationaal recht schendt" en daarom "geen partner van de Europese Unie kan zijn. Zo simpel is het."

Vraagtekens

De associatieovereenkomst tussen de EU en Israël stamt uit 2000 en bevat naast gunstige handelsafspraken ook een clausule over respect voor de mensenrechten. Spanje plaatste in 2024 al vraagtekens bij het verdrag, vanwege de humanitaire situatie in Gaza.

Spanje, Ierland en Slovenië hadden vrijdag al een verzoek ingediend om het verdrag te bespreken tijdens de volgende bijeenkomst van de ministers van Buitenlandse Zaken van de EU.

Al ver voor de finale was ze gelost, maar samen met Marianne Vos slaagde de wielrenster van UAE Team ADQ erin de achterstand op de groep met favorieten te dichten. "Toen rustte ik even vijf minuten uit en besloot ik ervoor te gaan", zei de 23-jarige Blasi.

De Spaanse stelde zelf aan tweevoudig winnares Vos voor om samen het gat dicht te rijden. "Ik zat op één beklimming in een hele slechte positie. Toen dacht ik dat mijn wedstrijd verloren was. Tot ik Marianne zag. Ze zei dat ze kapot was, maar dat gold ook voor mij." Doordat het tempo van de groep favorieten even lager was, slaagde het tweetal erin weer aan te sluiten.

Blasi: "Ik probeerde te volgen, maar voor mij is het makkelijker om voorin te zitten. Het voelde goed en toen ging ik ervoor. Eenmaal alleen aan kop vond ik het eigenlijk makkelijker dan in het peloton."

More than just a showcase, it’s a biannual tradition that connects instant film lovers worldwide. Here are some quick rules before you get started snapping. 

‘RoidWeek rules: 

• The photo pool is open from April 19th to April 24th.
• Submit photos that haven’t been shared to Flickr before.
• Keep your submissions to TWO photos per day throughout the 6 day event. 
• This is a film-only group. No Faux-laroids are accepted. A “faux-laroid” is a digital image edited to look like an instant photograph. 
• Participation is encouraged! Sharing your photos is important but you are also encouraged to fave, comment and interact with other group members to help build community and support around a shared love of instant film!
