The Adelaide stock exchange building, between Grenfell and Pirie streets, Adelaide, brought an extra treasure with its opening in 1901.
George Brookman, one of the exchange members, had a stained glass window commissioned for it by William Morris’s famous London design company Morris & Co. in the United Kingdom. Artist John Henry Dearle’s six-panel window, Adelaide’s first by the Morris company, commemorated Australian federation. In its lower panes there are figures representing Britain and her colonies, including Australia, Canada, India and South Africa. In the upper panels. the figures represent the morning, the Sun and evening. The window survived fire damage to the building in 1938 and 1982.
Adelaide’s original stock exchange was formed in 1887 when a group of financial brokers and traders came together to trade stocks and bonds for companies listed in the colony. It aligned with the stock exchanges in Australia’s other capital cities in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Hobart. After outgrowing premises in Pirie Street, Adelaide city, architects H.E. Fuller and H.N. Dunn were selected to design the 1901 red brick building in the federation Edwardian style, with its distinctive corner tower, officially opened by South Australian premier John Jenkins.
The building hosted another important milestone when postmaster/astronomer general Charles Todd set up Australia’s first telegraph station there in 1901.
The stock exchange remained in the building until 1991 but it was left empty for the next 20 years.
In 2007, the South Australian government bought the building that was restored two years later for it to become a focus for the state’s science education when it was the first international satellite of the Royal Institute of Great Britain. During the renovations, spaces closed over the years were reopened and many original features restored, including many artefacts from the stock exchange's operations.
The federation window was donated to the Art Gallery of South Australia but it remained part of the building. The building was heritage listed at the national and state level.

Fitzpatrick claims second PGA Tour victory of year
England’s Matt Fitzpatrick beat the world No 1, Scottie Scheffler, in a playoff to win the RBC Heritage for the second time.
Fitzpatrick took a three-shot into the final round at Hilton Head and still held that advantage standing on the 15th tee. But playing partner Scheffler produced birdies at 15 and 16 and Fitzpatrick’s duffed chip on 18 cost him a bogey, sending him into a playoff that he looked second favourite to win.
