BEIJING (ANP/BLOOMBERG) - China heeft oorlogsschepen voor oefeningen naar het westen van de Stille Oceaan gestuurd als reactie op Japanse deelname aan grootschalige oefeningen van de Verenigde Staten, Canada, Nieuw-Zeeland, Australië, Frankrijk en de Filippijnen bij de Filippijnen.

De spanningen tussen China en Japan zijn opgelopen. Enkele dagen geleden verweet China Japan dat het een oorlogsschip door de Straat van Taiwan had laten varen. Beijing beschouwt dat als een provocatie.

China beschouwt Taiwan als een afvallige provincie en wil het eiland inlijven. De Japanse premier Sanae Takaichi zei in november dat Japan zou ingrijpen als China Taiwan met geweld inneemt.

De Chinese militaire aanwezigheid in het gebied ten westen van de eilandenreeks Japan, Taiwan en de Filippijnen breidt zich uit. Japan heeft meerdere malen de aanwezigheid van Chinese oorlogsschepen bij zijn zuidwestelijke eilanden gerapporteerd.

Bijna 33 jaar na haar verdwijning lijkt er opnieuw beweging te komen in de cold case rond studente Tanja Groen. Vanuit een Belgische gevangenis meldde de 55-jarige Johan V. zich met informatie over wie haar in 1993 zou hebben ontvoerd, misbruikt, vermoord en begraven. Hij noemde volgens ingewijden een naam, een vermoedelijke handlanger en een locatie in Maastricht waar Tanja zou liggen. Het onderzoeksteam overweegt op basis daarvan een nieuwe graafactie, maar justitie houdt de kaken stijf op elkaar.

Johan V., zelf tot levenslang veroordeeld voor een moord in Heerlen, is geen onbekende in het dossier. Hij woonde begin jaren negentig in Maastricht en was al eerder als “person of interest” in beeld, zonder dat dat tot een doorbraak leidde. Zijn nieuwe verklaring kan hem veel opleveren: tipgeld en mogelijk perspectief bij een verzoek om voorwaardelijke vrijlating. Dat maakt zijn verhaal tegelijk potentieel explosief én omstreden.

Ondertussen wachten de hoogbejaarde ouders Adrie en Corrie Groen nog altijd op duidelijkheid. Ondanks jaren van zoekacties, een miljoen aan tipgeld en recent DNA-onderzoek, ontbreekt elk spoor van hun dochter. Justitie zegt toe te werken naar afronding van het onderzoek, maar of dit nieuwe spoor de stilte rond Tanja eindelijk doorbreekt, blijft voorlopig een pijnlijke open vraag

When Hitchcock admonished the dog, Spoto noted it was the first time in four years the director had addressed him by name.

These accounts have surfaced in an unearthed transcript of a previously forgotten interview between Spoto and the actor Tippi Hedren in 1980, six months after Hitchcock’s death. But they also suggest something else: an uneasy relationship from the outset, shaped by misreading, distrust and a degree of personal grievance.

Report says lack of provision is harmful to health and damaging for high streets

The analysis by the Royal Society for Public Health found a “significant shortfall” in provision, with 15,481 people for each public toilet in England. That contrasts sharply with Scotland, where there are 8,500 people for each toilet, and Wales, with 6,748.
