From passionate romantasy novels to premium television dramas, culture is bringing the agency, desires and interior lives of women to the fore. It’s proving good for business, but is this a permanent revolution?
Do you voraciously read the pages of steamy romantasy bestsellers by Sarah J Maas or Rebecca Yarros? Or flood your group chat with breathless recaps of the latest goings-on in TV series such as Heated Rivalry or Bridgerton? Or even immerse yourself in the divisive and challenging cinematic worlds of Emerald Fennell? If so, you surely can’t have failed to notice that in pop culture, the female gaze – storytelling that highlights the meandering, textured, sublimely messy inner worlds and wants of women – is enjoying an explosion.
On TV, you can see it everywhere, in the interior lives and desires taken up by Big Little Lies, Sirens or Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington’s Little Fires Everywhere. Romantasy harbours it in the shape of powerful maidens and sex in fae (fairy) realms, while Fennell’s Wuthering Heights and Promising Young Woman are marketed with the promise of converting women’s experiences into dark beauty on the big screen.

Keir Starmer would have withdrawn Peter Mandelson’s appointment as ambassador to the US if he had known he had not passed security vetting, Liz Kendall said, even if it was close to Donald Trump’s inauguration.
Kendall told Laura Kuenssberg on BBC One that Starmer would have rescinded the job offer if he had been told – regardless of the timing ahead of Trump taking up the Presidency.

Van z'n bed gelicht door Het Systeem wegens letterlijk z'n minst racistische grap ooit namelijk over dat PowNed-verslaggevers (!) van Ameland (!) gejaagd moesten worden. Uit z'n huis getrokken terwijl z'n kind boven lag te slapen, zonder de tenlastelegging te weten meerdere keren van voertuig gewisseld en uit eindelijk in een politiecel te Leeuwarden beland terwijl het persbericht over zijn arrestatie al de voorpagina's had gevonden. Vervolgens werd de zaak na maanden stilte ineens onder heel vreemde voorwaarden geseponeerd, en in deze EXCLUSIVE kondigt Jan dus aan dat hij het OM gaat aanklagen voor een vergoeding van zijn advocatenkosten en een schadevergoeding. Afijn, in deze aflevering doet Jan dus voor het eerst in detail zijn verhaal omdat hij voorheen de rechtsgang niet wilde hinderen andere media nooit ook maar enige interesse in zijn verhaal hebben getoond. Maar wij zijn geen andere media.

In het koelvak zien ze er identiek uit: witte bollen in bleek vocht, soms zelfs in bijna dezelfde verpakking. Toch kost de ene mozzarella drie keer zoveel als de andere. Hoe kan dat?
Een deel van de verklaring zit in de herkomst van de melk. Mozzarella van koemelk uit anonieme megastallen is nu eenmaal goedkoper dan buffelmozzarella van kleine boeren met hogere voeder‑ en energiekosten. Certificering, dierenwelzijn en arbeidsomstandigheden worden steeds vaker meegerekend in de prijs.
Daarbovenop komt de kracht van het label. AOP‑ en DOP‑stempels, regionale benamingen en Italiaanse vlaggen op de verpakking laten consumenten meer betalen, ook als het productiewerk deels verplaatst is naar lagelonenregio’s. Marketing en merkopbouw zijn bij kaas al bijna zo belangrijk als bij wijn.
En dan is er nog de supermarkt zelf. Huismerken worden vaak onder scherpe voorwaarden ingekocht, terwijl premiummerken extra marge opleveren. De prijs vertelt dus niet alleen iets over de melk, maar ook over logistiek, marketing en machtsverhoudingen in de voedselketen.
De vraag blijft: proef je dat verschil echt terug op je pizza of in je caprese, of betaal je vooral voor een verhaal op het etiket? Als je een snob bent moet je natuurlijk de duurste nemen. Maar anders kan je eens proberen hoe het goedkoopst smaakt.
