An Oklahoma principal has been praised for preventing a tragedy at his high school by charging and disarming a former student armed with two semi-automatic handguns, an episode captured on dramatic surveillance video.
Kirk Moore, principal of Pauls Valley high school, was shot in the leg as he wrestled the attacker, a 20-year-old said by court documents to be obsessed with the 1999 shooting at Colorado’s Columbine high school in which 12 students and one teacher were killed.

Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman urged theater owners to cut down the roughly 30 minutes of trailers and ads before movies. "Get off the ad crack," Rothman told the audience at CinemaCon this week. "Get rid of the endless advertising and substantially shorten the long pre-shows." Variety reports: He noted that frequent moviegoers now show up a half hour late to avoid all the spots (something that reserved seating has made easier than ever before). Rothman said that means many people "don't even see the trailers," which results in "enticements gone to waste." Rothman predicted that the 2026 box office, which has already benefitted from hits like "Super Mario Galaxy Movie" and "Project Hail Mary," will rebound in a big way. But he acknowledged that attendance still trails pre-pandemic levels.
Rothman has been a vociferous defender of the big screen, pushing studios to embrace longer windows so that movies will stay in cinemas longer. That was a theme that Rothman returned to at CinemaCon, pressing exhibitors to hold strong and agree not to show movies that quickly appear on streaming services or on-demand platforms. "Enforce longer windows," Rothman said. "Yes, even if that means you cannot play every film."
In addition to stumping for exhibition, Rothman has practically begged Hollywood to invest in new stories along with all the franchise fare. In a recent New York Times op-ed, for instance, Rothman, the longest-serving studio chief, wrote, "For all the success of films driven by existing intellectual property, originality is essential to movies. Neither movie theaters nor the art form itself can survive without at least some originality. After all, you can't make a sequel to nothing."

VVD-senator Marjolein van der Linden is sinds 1 december 2025 werkzaam als lobbyist voor DPG Media, bekend van internet, maar heeft dat niet gemeld aan het functieregister van de Eerste Kamer. Op de site van de Eerste Kamer (die kapot moet, red.) stond ze tot gisteren nog te boek als 'COO RTL Nederland'. Na vragen van GeenStijl heeft ze haar functie-omschrijving aangepast in 'Manager public affairs/stakeholders DPG Media vanaf 1 mei 2026'. Volgens Van der Linden heeft ze haar nieuwe functie niet nog niet eerder gemeld omdat de gesprekken over haar arbeidsovereenkomst nog zijn heeft afgerond en ze pas officieel per 1 mei de nieuwe rol krijgt. Ze erkent wel dat ze al sinds 1 december is 'opgestart' in haar nieuwe functie, na de overname door DPG van RTL per 1 juli vorig jaar.
"Ik realiseer me door uw vragen dat deze overgangssituatie vragen kan oproepen. Hoewel mijn oude en eventuele nieuwe functie in relatie tot het Eerste Kamerwerk niet veel van elkaar verschillen is het beter om hier zo transparant als mogelijk over te zijn. Zodoende heb ik vandaag de griffie van de Eerste Kamer gevraagd om, vooruitlopend op de contractuele situatie, mijn beoogde functie bij DPG per 1 december in het register van de Eerste Kamer te laten opnemen. Ik zal in de gaten houden dat dit gaat worden aangepast."
Wij dachten eigenlijk altijd dat public affairs gewoon een ander woord is voor lobbyen, maar volgens de professionals is lobbywerk een onderdeel van public affairs. Hoe dan ook is het natuurlijk wel een beetje lastig als je aan de ene kant namens allemaal media contacten aan het onderhouden bent in, we noemen maar een plek, politiek Den Haag, en aan de andere kant een politieke partij vertegenwoordigt die juist kritisch gevolgd moet worden door diezelfde media. Volgens Van der Linden is er echter geen probleem met belangenverstrengeling.
"Voor huidige en toekomstige functie geldt: conform de gedragscode integriteit van de Eerste Kamer ben ik geen lid van de commissie OCW (Onderwijs, Cultuur en Media) in de Eerste Kamer en behandel zodoende geen wetten en neem geen deel aan debatten die raken aan mijn hoofdfunctie."
Van der Linden blijft actief voor de lobby-organisatie van nieuwsmedia NDP namens DPG Media. Eerder was ze in het bestuur van NDP actief namens RTL Nieuws.
