Does having children make you happier? Apparently not, according to a new study published in Evolutionary Psychology which, despite involving more than 5,000 participants in 10 countries, including Britain, could find no strong evidence that parenthood led to a measurable increase in positive emotions. The researchers, led by Menelaos Apostolou of the University of Nicosia, looked at both hedonic wellbeing (day-to-day emotional states such as joy, sadness and loneliness) and eudaimonic wellbeing (a feeling of purpose and meaning). With the exception of mothers in Greece, who felt a greater sense of the latter, there was no statistically significant difference between parents and non-parents, suggesting that becoming a parent leaves your emotional wellbeing largely unchanged.
This was seen as surprising, but is it, truly? I love my son and being his mother has given my life great joy and meaning, but that is not to say that my life has more joy and meaning than that of someone without children. To an extent, comparing my life as a mother with the life of a stranger without children is meaningless: children are not appendages whose presence or absence reveal a static emotional state. The only way you could truly get the data would be by having access to the two timelines. In one, you had children, in the other, you didn’t. The parallel selves would each complete a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) questionnaire which could then be compared.

Continue reading...WASHINGTON (ANP) - Het is verstandig dat het Nederlandse kabinet nog niet meteen een pakket maatregelen heeft aangekondigd om de energie- en brandstofrekening van huishoudens te verlagen. Dat heeft de Nederlandse bestuurder van het Internationaal Monetair Fonds (IMF) Marnix van Rij gezegd in gesprek met het ANP. Volgens hem is de keuze van het kabinet tot nu toe in lijn met het advies van het IMF: ga niet te snel.
Door de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten zijn de energieprijzen flink opgelopen. Waar een aantal Europese landen al met maatregelen is gekomen om de pijn voor hun bevolking te verzachten, is dit in Nederland nog niet gebeurd.
Maar volgens Van Rij is het "eigenlijk te vroeg om nu al heel snel naar gereedschap te grijpen, om op hele korte termijn misschien veel te veel geld uit te geven". De voormalige CDA-politicus, die tegenwoordig in het IMF-bestuur zit, legt uit dat het IMF op dit punt "vrij uitgesproken" is.
Russische inval
Van Rij was als staatssecretaris van Financiën betrokken bij de noodmaatregelen van het kabinet-Rutte 4 in 2022 toen de inflatie tot grote hoogte steeg na de Russische inval in Oekraïne. Toen werden wel snel acties aangekondigd. Nu is de situatie anders, vindt hij. Volgens Van Rij was de inflatie voor de oorlog in Oekraïne ook al aan het oplopen. Ook werd toen snel duidelijk dat huishoudens kampten met energiearmoede.
Wanneer het kabinet alsnog besluit tot actie over te gaan, is het advies van het IMF om de ingrepen gericht en tijdelijk te houden. "Richt het op met name die inkomensgroepen die echt in de problemen komen."
Energietoeslag
"Nederland hoeft ook niet het wiel opnieuw uit te vinden", stipt Van Rij aan. Volgens hem is in 2022 al uitgebreid onderzocht welke maatregelen geschikt zijn. Hij noemt als voorbeeld de energietoeslag voor huishoudens met een inkomen tot 120 procent van het sociaal minimum.
"Toen speelde ook de vraag: kun je niks anders doen?", herinnert Van Rij zich. "Kunnen we niet de zorg- of huurtoeslag even verhogen? Dat hebben we toen allemaal uitgezocht. En dat bleek toch behoorlijk ingewikkeld te zijn." Volgens Van Rij is het ook belangrijk om met de uitvoerbaarheid voor bijvoorbeeld de Belastingdienst rekening te houden.
In 2022 besloot het kabinet ook tot een accijnsverlaging aan de pomp. Dat was geen gerichte maatregel, erkent Van Rij. Het was wel de bedoeling dat de lagere accijns tijdelijk zou zijn. Maar de verlaging is tot nu toe slechts gedeeltelijk teruggedraaid. "Dan zie je maar hoe je moet opletten met dat soort maatregelen."
