NEW YORK (ANP) - Aan de winstreeks op Wall Street van de laatste dagen kwam vrijdag een einde. De graadmeters op de aandelenbeurzen in New York gingen overwegend met verliezen de handel uit. Beleggers leken wat voorzichtiger te worden in aanloop naar de vredesgesprekken tussen de Verenigde Staten en Iran, die in het weekend beginnen.

De Dow-Jonesindex verloor 0,6 procent tot 47.916,57 punten. De brede S&P 500 zakte 0,1 procent tot 6816,89 punten. Alleen techbeurs Nasdaq ging licht vooruit, met 0,4 procent naar 22.902,89 punten.

De olieprijzen lieten een daling zien. Amerikaanse olie werd zo'n 2 procent goedkoper en een vat Brent kostte ruim 1 procent minder.

Beleggers verwerkten ook nieuwe inflatiecijfers. Het gemiddelde prijspeil in de VS steeg in maart 3,3 procent. Daarmee is de inflatie minder sterk opgelopen dan kenners hadden gevreesd. Niettemin kende de Amerikaanse inflatie de sterkste groei in jaren. Door de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten is ook in de VS het tanken van benzine of diesel flink duurder geworden.

ISLAMABAD (ANP/RTR) - Een Iraanse delegatie is geland in de Pakistaanse hoofdstad Islamabad, op de vooravond van vredesonderhandelingen met de Verenigde Staten. De landen houden het overleg op uitnodiging van bemiddelaar Pakistan.

De delegatie wordt geleid door parlementsvoorzitter Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf en bestaat verder uit onder anderen de minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Abbas Araghchi, topfunctionarissen en parlementariërs. Ghalibaf zei vrijdag dat de onderhandelingen pas kunnen beginnen bij een staakt-het-vuren in Libanon en na de vrijgave van bevroren Iraanse tegoeden. De Amerikaanse delegatie wordt geleid door vicepresident JD Vance. Hij is nog onderweg naar Pakistan.

De Pakistaanse premier Shehbaz Sharif beschouwt het overleg als allesbeslissend voor een permanent bestand in het Midden-Oosten. Pakistan speelde eerder ook al een rol bij de totstandkoming van het twee weken durende staakt-het-vuren dat deze week werd aangekondigd.

OEIRAS (ANP) - De Nederlandse tennissters hebben degradatie uit groep 1 van de Europees-Afrikaanse zone in de Billie Jean King Cup voorkomen. Het team van captain Kiki Bertens won in het Portugese Oeiras met 2-0 van Noorwegen.

Anouk Koevermans versloeg Katja Wiersholm in twee sets: 6-0 7-5. Suzan Lamens had drie sets nodig om af te rekenen met Malene Helgo: 6-7 (3) 6-4 6-2.

Nederland verloor donderdag van Turkije, waardoor het team als derde eindigde in de groep. Daardoor was een play-offwedstrijd tegen Noorwegen nodig om degradatie af te wenden.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - De eerste NS-conducteurs krijgen eind deze maand een bodycam uitgereikt. Het kan nog tot eind dit jaar duren voordat alle treinbeambten er een kunnen dragen tijdens hun werk. Dat meldt staatssecretaris Annet Bertram (Openbaar Vervoer, CDA) aan de Tweede Kamer.

Het vorige kabinet trok vorig jaar op Prinsjesdag 12 miljoen euro uit voor de aanschaf van bodycams voor conducteurs, als onderdeel van een breder pakket om de veiligheid in de trein te verbeteren. De NS heeft de aanbesteding inmiddels afgerond en begint deze maand met testen of de gekochte apparaten goed werken en goed op het uniform zitten.

De NS deed al eens een proef met bodycams, en was positief over de resultaten. Het spoorbedrijf concludeerde dat het dragen van de apparaten "de-escalerend" werkt en bovendien bij geweldsincidenten camerabeelden oplevert die als bewijsmateriaal kunnen dienen.

Gmail's end-to-end encryption is now available on all Android and iOS devices, letting enterprise users send and read encrypted emails directly in the app without any extra tools. "This launch combines the highest level of privacy and data encryption with a user-friendly experience for all users, enabling simple encrypted email for all customers from small businesses to enterprises and public sector," Google announced in a blog post. BleepingComputer reports: Starting this week, encrypted messages will be delivered as regular emails to Gmail recipients' inboxes if they use the Gmail app. Recipients who don't have the Gmail mobile app and use other email services can read them in a web browser, regardless of the device and service they're using.

[...] This feature is now available for all client-side encryption (CSE) users with Enterprise Plus licenses and the Assured Controls or Assured Controls Plus add-on after admins enable the Android and iOS clients in the CSE admin interface via the Admin Console. Gmail's end-to-end encryption (E2EE) feature is powered by the client-side encryption (CSE) technical control, which allows Google Workspace organizations to use encryption keys they control and are stored outside Google's servers to protect sensitive documents and emails.

Futurism found that Google News is surfacing Polymarket betting pages alongside traditional news sources. "The bets often appear in the 'For you' section of Google News, which is tailored to a user's personal interests," the publication reports. "In one instance, it was even the very top result, as with this bet on the price of Bitcoin." From the report: In our testing, Polymarket bets are also showing up on the Google News home page. But links from the prediction market can pop up all over Google News, including in searches. In further tests, looking up "will ships transit the strait," referring to the Strait of Hormuz, returned numerous credible sources like Financial Times, The Guardian, and Reuters. Just below them, however, was a Polymarket bet on the number of ships that would be allowed to pass through the critical oil passageway.

This doesn't appear to be an accident. When searching "Polymarket" in its search bar, Google News now allows users to choose it as a "source," directing them to a page that aggregates other Polymarket hits. It's not the only non-news site that's selectable as a source -- looking up "Reddit" and "X" offers the option, too -- but searching for "Kalshi," another prediction market and Polymarket's main competitor, doesn't give the option to use it as a source. [...] In light of all this, Polymarket appearing in Google News is a major victory for the prediction platform -- rubber-stamping its image as an authority on developing real-world events right alongside genuine real publishers of journalism.

Before Artemis II, an uncrewed Orion capsule flew in 2022 as part of the Artemis I mission, allowing a test of its heat shield without risking anyone’s well-being. During reentry, that heat shield cracked and shed more material than NASA engineers had expected. The space agency performed an urgent investigation into the anomaly and released a report detailing its findings in 2024. Ultimately, citing the expense and time any replacement would’ve taken, NASA decided not to change the heat shield design for Artemis II’s Orion capsule. Instead mission planners adjusted the capsule’s reentry trajectory so that its heat shield would be exposed to higher temperatures for a shorter time. Orion’s heat shield has been extensively tested on the ground, and NASA officials have said that their models show the new reentry profile effectively minimizes the reentry risk for the Artemis II crew." The Trump administration on Friday released new renderings of the triumphal arch the president wants to install in Memorial Circle at the foot of the Arlington Memorial Bridge.

As part of Donald Trump’s legacy-building quest during his second term in office, the so-called “Arc de Trump” would stand 250ft tall, feature a 60ft golden Lady Liberty, and include a viewing deck. The phrase “One Nation Under God” would stretch across the top of the structure, according to the latest plans from Harrison Design.

Former hedge fund manager ‘forced to accept’ newspaper likely to succeed in its public interest defence, say his lawyers

Crispin Odey, the former hedge fund manager, has dropped his £79m libel claim against the Financial Times over its reporting of sexual misconduct allegations against him, his lawyers have said.

In 2023, the FT published several articles from 20 women alleging sexual assault and harassment against Odey, covering a period of five decades. He has previously denied the allegations against him.
