“Nigel’s here,” Derek Chisora says as he gives me a nudge when we walk into a restaurant called Boisdale in Belgravia. The great old warhorse of British boxing and I have been ambling around this stretch of London in search of a place where we can sit down and talk. He settles on Boisdale, which tags itself as “a British restaurant” and “a carnivore’s delight”.

Even though we are not dropping in for lunch Chisora has enough of a swagger to blag us a private room to chat. We look more ragged than the diners, including Nigel Farage, and I’m not sure that the seemingly bewildered staff have a clear idea who Chisora is but we sweep through the restaurant, climb the stairs and find ourselves in a discreet room. After Chisora orders a bottle of water for us to share he asks the waiter to let Farage know that he is here.

The 33-year-old forward, who announced last week that he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, was also forced to miss Egypt’s friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Spain. The Pharaohs face the latter in Barcelona on Tuesday.

As thousands of US soldiers and marines arrive in the Middle East, Iran is accusing Washington of privately plotting a ground assault while publicly touting ceasefire talks.

Donald Trump threatened to ‘obliterate’ Iran’s energy infrastructure, said his ‘preference would be to take the oil’ in Iran and that US forces could seize the regime’s export hub on Kharg Island, while also claiming he was in talks with a new ‘reasonable regime’.

Yemen’s Houthi forces have also entered the conflict, bringing the threat of further damage to the global economy.

ADELANTO (ANP/RTR) - Een Mexicaanse immigrant is overleden in een Amerikaans immigratiedetentiecentrum in Los Angeles, meldde immigratiedienst ICE maandag. De man zou bewusteloos zijn aangetroffen in zijn bed. Het is niet bekend waar hij aan overleed. Volgens een lokale nieuwssite was hij 36 jaar.

Dit brengt het aantal doden in ICE-detentie dit jaar op zeker veertien. De Amerikaanse president Donald Trump startte na zijn aantreden vorig jaar een massale deportatiecampagne. Hij beloofde miljoenen immigranten die illegaal in de VS verblijven vast te zetten en te deporteren.

Afgelopen februari zaten er 68.000 immigranten in ICE-detentiecentra opgesloten. Vorig jaar stierven er zeker 31, het hoogste aantal in twintig jaar. Het huidige tempo dreigt dat record te overtreffen.

De Mexicaanse president Claudia Sheinbaum heeft gezegd maatregelen te gaan nemen na de dood van de Mexicaanse immigrant, maar kwam niet met details.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - De beperkingen op het ministerie van Financiën als gevolg van een digitale inbraak raken circa 1600 publieke instellingen die hun overtollige middelen bij het departement stallen. Het digitale portaal voor dit zogenoemde schatkistbankieren behoort tot de systemen die uit voorzorg zijn uitgeschakeld. Dat meldt minister Eelco Heinen (Financiën, VVD) in een brief aan de Tweede Kamer.

Onder meer gemeenten, provincies en waterschappen zijn verplicht het geld dat zij niet direct nodig hebben om hun wettelijke taken uit te voeren, in de schatkist te bewaren. Ook andere instellingen met een publieke taak, zoals het CBS, het KNMI en het UWV, doen aan schatkistbankieren, net als sommige onderwijsinstellingen.

Deelnemers kunnen momenteel het saldo van hun schatkistrekening niet digitaal inzien. Maar zij kunnen nog wel bij hun geld, benadrukt Heinen. Zowel in- als uitgaande betalingen gaan gewoon door. "Waar nodig wordt de minimale dienstverlening handmatig voortgezet, zodat essentiële processen kunnen blijven functioneren."

DEN HAAG (ANP) - SGP en JA21 willen opheldering over het besluit van minister Sjoerd Sjoerdsma (Ontwikkelingshulp, D66) om dit jaar al de bezuiniging op de VN-hulporganisatie voor Palestijnse vluchtelingen UNRWA ongedaan te maken. Vorige week stemde de Tweede Kamer nog tegen een voorstel om de oude subsidie van 19 miljoen te herstellen. "De begroting aanpassen zes dagen nadat erover gestemd is, getuigt niet van democratisch ethos", meent Chris Stoffer (SGP).

Sjoerdsma schreef maandag aan de Kamer dat de hulp van UNRWA in de regio hard nodig is. "Door het leveren van basisdiensten aan Palestijnse vluchtelingen draagt UNRWA bij aan betere leefomstandigheden en stabiliteit in de regio. Met de huidige situatie in de regio en de druk op de lokale systemen, is UNRWA nodig om de noden te verlichten voor de Palestijnse vluchtelingen."

Het vorige kabinet besloot de steun aan UNRWA af te bouwen. Dat gebeurde na een motie van SGP en JA21. In het coalitieakkoord kondigden D66, VVD en CDA al aan de relatie met UNRWA te willen herstellen.

Zijne Majesteit de Koning heeft vanmiddag, maandag 30 maart, op Paleis Noordeinde zijn eerste reguliere, wekelijkse gesprek gevoerd met minister-president Jetten na de beëdiging van het kabinet-Jetten op 23 februari 2026. In deze gesprekken wordt de Koning door de minister-president op de hoogte gehouden van het actuele regeringsbeleid.
