BRUSSEL (ANP/RTR) - De EU maakt 16,5 miljoen euro vrij om de meest recente ebola-uitbraak in de Democratische Republiek Congo en Oeganda tegen te gaan. Dat meldt Eurocommissaris Hadja Lahbib (Crisisbeheer) na een bezoek aan Congo en overleg met de Afrikaanse Unie en de Afrikaanse Centra voor Ziektebestrijding en Preventie.

Er gaat 6,5 miljoen euro naar training voor zorgmedewerkers aan de frontlinie en 5 miljoen euro naar de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie voor de aanschaf van bijvoorbeeld beschermende pakken. De Commissie doneert ook 5 miljoen euro aan testapparatuur, zoals laboratoriumtestkits.

"Gezondheidsveiligheid is een gedeelde verantwoordelijkheid: virussen houden geen rekening met grenzen", aldus Lahbib. Vorige maand had de EU ook al 15 miljoen euro extra vrijgemaakt voor de bestrijding van het virus.

Internationale bezorgdheid

Het Europees Centrum voor ziektepreventie en -bestrijding (ECDC) is ook in contact met zijn Afrikaanse wederhelft, waar het mogelijk bij kan staan.

Dat de dodelijke en besmettelijke ziekte zich weer verspreidt, leidt al weken internationaal tot bezorgdheid. De autoriteiten maakten halverwege mei bekend dat sprake was van een uitbraak van de bundibugyovariant van ebola. De ziekte heeft in de periode daarvoor vermoedelijk wekenlang ongemerkt kunnen rondgaan. Dat betekent dat gezondheidspersoneel op achterstand staat bij pogingen de uitbraak te bestrijden. Het officiële dodental in Congo ging deze week de honderd voorbij.

TEHERAN (ANP/AFP/RTR) - De recente Israëlische aanvallen hebben in Iran het leven gekost aan zeker twee militairen, meldt de Iraanse staatstelevisie. De twee zouden deel hebben uitgemaakt van de luchtverdedigingseenheden van de krijgsmacht.

"Deze geëerde martelaren van de luchtverdedigingsmacht van het leger kwamen om het leven tijdens het uitvoeren van hun missie om het luchtruim van het land te verdedigen tijdens de aanval van het zionistische regime", berichtte de staatstelevisie.

Het bericht volgde op aanvallen over en weer tussen Iran en Israël. Die strijd laaide zondag op nadat Israël weer doelen in Libanon had gebombardeerd. Iran vuurde daarop raketten af op Israël en dat land reageerde met aanvallen op doelen in Iran zelf.

De landen maakten maandag duidelijk de aanvallen weer te beëindigen. Het zou de bedoeling zijn in de loop van dinsdag uitvaartplechtigheden in Teheran te houden voor de twee gesneuvelde militairen.

Far-right National Libertarian party say museum would highlight ‘victims’ of socialist government

According to the seven congresspeople from the far-right National Libertarian party who presented the bill, the museum would highlight the “outrage, hunger and humiliation” of Allende’s Popular Unity government.

Lesley Groff, Jeffrey Epstein’s longtime executive assistant, is testifying on Tuesday before the House oversight and reform committee as lawmakers on the panel continue their investigation into the late convicted sex offender.

Groff worked for Epstein for almost 20 years, beginning in 2001 and ending in July 2019 when he was arrested. Notes from a 2021 FBI interview with Groff, which was included in the millions of documents related to Epstein released by the Department of Justice earlier this year, state that she told agents that she began working for Epstein after she was contacted by a headhunter, who found her resume and told her that there “was a job to organize one man’s life”.
