Een 25-jarige fietsenmaker uit Leeuwarden is door de politierechter veroordeeld voor het stelen van accu’s van elektrische fietsen op de treinstations van Mantgum en Dronryp, waar hij op zijn vaste vrije dag, de maandag, „voor de kick” en voor wat extra geld tientallen accu’s wegnam. Dat schrijft het Dagblad voor het Noorden.

De man haalde de accu’s met een schroevendraaier eenvoudig uit de houders en verkocht ze via Marktplaats voor 60 tot 80 euro per stuk. Hij liep tegen de lamp nadat de politie in de fietsenstalling bij station Dronryp een lokfiets met gps‑tracker had geplaatst en de accu daarvan op 8 december in beweging kwam; in zijn auto werden toen drie gestolen accu’s gevonden. Tegen de Leeuwarder lagen negentien aangiftes, negen slachtoffers vroegen om schadevergoeding, en de rechter legde hem ruim 3100 euro schadevergoeding en een taakstraf van 140 uur op, waarvan 40 uur voorwaardelijk, mede omdat hij een blanco strafblad had en openlijk spijt betuigde.

De Russische president Vladimir Poetin heeft in een besloten bijeenkomst de rijkste zakenlieden van het land onder druk gezet om extra miljarden in de staatskas te storten, nu de oorlog in Oekraïne de begroting zwaar uitput. Dat melden onder meer het Russische onderzoeksmedium The Bell en de ‘Financial Times’, berichten die bevestigd worden door Reuters en andere internationale media.

Tijdens de meeting vroeg Poetin de oligarchen om “donaties” aan de begroting om de financiën te stabiliseren en de oorlogsinspanningen voort te zetten. De boodschap was dat Rusland blijft doorvechten tot de volledige Donbas onder Russische controle staat, ongeacht de economische prijs. Minstens één oligarch, miljardair Soeleiman Kerimov, zou direct hebben beloofd 100 miljard roebel – zo’n 1,23 miljard dollar – over te maken

De financiële nood is het resultaat van een dubbele klap: een afkoelende economie die de belastinginkomsten drukt én teruglopende netto‑opbrengsten uit olie en gas. Door westerse sancties raakte Moskou de lucratieve Europese markt grotendeels kwijt en is het aangewezen op landen als China en India, die forse korting eisen en zo Poetins oorlogskas verder uithollen. Bovendien vreet de dure, deels illegale “schaduwvloot” waarmee Rusland oliesancties probeert te omzeilen aan de winstmarges, nu steeds meer landen daartegen optreden

De nieuwe miljardeninjecties van oligarchen onderstrepen hoe afhankelijk het Kremlin is geworden van de vermogende elite om de oorlog te financieren – en hoeveel economische schade de langdurige strijd Rusland inmiddels berokkent.

De oorlog in cijfers

• Russisch defensiebudget 2025: naar schatting ongeveer 13,5 tot 15,5 biljoen roebel, goed voor circa 7 procent van het bbp.
• In dollartermen komt dat neer op grofweg 145 à 150 miljard dollar, een recordniveau sinds het uiteenvallen van de Sovjet‑Unie.
• Russische militaire uitgaven lagen in 2024 volgens SIPRI rond de 149 miljard dollar, ruim dubbel zo veel als in het laatste vredesjaar 2021.
• De inkomsten uit olie en gas voor de federale begroting bedroegen in 2024 ongeveer 11,1 biljoen roebel (circa 108 miljard dollar), zo’n 30 procent van alle federale inkomsten.
• Oekraïne gaf in 2024 ongeveer 64,7 miljard dollar uit aan defensie, wat neerkomt op circa 43 procent van de Russische militaire uitgaven.

Een meevaller voor mensen die regelmatig gebruikmaken van de Algerabrug. De brug tussen Krimpen aan den IJssel en Capelle aan den IJssel is komende zomer geen zes, maar vier weken dicht vanwege werkzaamheden. Het grootste deel van de afsluiting valt in de zomervakantie.

AI models that lie and cheat appear to be growing in number with reports of deceptive scheming surging in the last six months, a study into the technology has found.

AI chatbots and agents disregarded direct instructions, evaded safeguards and deceived humans and other AI, according to research funded by the UK government-funded AI Safety Institute (AISI). The study, shared with the Guardian, identified nearly 700 real-world cases of AI scheming and charted a five-fold rise in misbehaviour between October and March, with some AI models destroying emails and other files without permission.

Rania Jaber told her husband that if God blessed them with a daughter, she would be named Narjis, Arabic for daffodil. After having twin boys, Jaber wanted a little girl she could dress up.

Jaber got her girl and made good on her promise: Narjis was born in 2020. Her mother was delighted to find that just like her namesake flower, her daughter’s hair was light. Narjis seemed “wise beyond her years”, Jaber said, recalling how her daughter would comfort her whenever she would cry.

Shockingly, inexplicably, Donald Trump keeps finding new places to put his face. Also, his name. Or initials. Or one of those drawings a turkey a kid does by tracing the outline of their hand. He’s got his ballroom, the Kennedy Center, and a proposed 250ft arch that would become one of the tallest buildings in all of Washington DC – a city with longstanding height restrictions for development. His signature will be on US dollars later this year, in a first for a sitting president. I’d ask if he was getting tired of all the attention, but I think we know the answer to that. Up next is a commemorative gold coin – worth exactly $1 – featuring Trump’s scowling visage looming menacingly over the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office.

It’s a pretty classic Trump pose, designed to make a nearly-80-year-old man with a variety of mystery bruises who eats McDonald’s on a regular basis look physically intimidating. Beyond the president sporting a classic gen Z pout, the Commission of Fine Arts (a panel appointed by You Know Who) recommended this coin be “as large as possible”, which immediately makes me think of the giant penny Bruce Wayne keeps in the Batcave. Good luck trying to feed a parking meter with that.
