Western Australia’s Kimberley region is featured in this double view from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.

The area pictured is part of Kimberley’s western coastline along the Indian Ocean. The large inlet on the left is King Sound – a gulf measuring about 120 km long and 50 km wide. King Sound has the highest tides in Australia, and amongst the highest in the world, reaching a maximum range of around 11 to 12 m.

Several rivers empty their muddy and sediment-laden waters into the sound. Among these, the Fitzroy River, flowing from the bottom centre of the image, is one of Australia’s largest watercourses. The port town of Derby lies near the mouth of this river on the western shore of the smaller peninsula jutting out into the sound.

Acquired in December 2025, this view is in natural colour, as the human eye would see the area.

A myriad of mangrove estuaries are scattered around the coast, which in the natural colour image are partially concealed within the large expanses of tidal mud flats. This view allows the mangroves to be easily distinguished as they appear in neon green, which indicates how dense and vital the mangrove forests are. This is particularly important, as mangroves contribute many environmental benefits to coastal and estuary ecosystems and protect the coastline from erosion.

Owing to the presence of sediment carried by river discharge, the water in King Sound appears brownish in the natural colour image, also suggesting shallow water. In false colours, the water shows up in black and blue hues, which reveal deep water with blue denoting a higher concentration of sediment on the surface.

The hinterland visible in the images is a transition zone where grasslands gradually give way to the arid deserts further south in Australia’s vast and remote interior. In natural colours, the landscape is dominated by sparse green vegetation and the deep ochre and rusty red of the soil – this is known as pindan soil, which is rich in iron oxides and is typically found in the south-western Kimberley region.

In this view, the natural red of the soil can sometimes hide burn scars, while in the false-colour image they are clearly visible as dark patches on the land. The ability to identify areas burnt by wildfires is a valuable resource in regions such as this one, prone to fires, as it allows authorities to better track the frequency of fires, map the extent of the burned areas and evaluate the impact on the surrounding environment.

MOSKOU (ANP/DPA) - Rusland heeft tegengesproken dat het Iran met militaire informatie helpt bij aanvallen op Amerikaanse doelen in het Midden-Oosten. "Wij hebben Iran van bepaalde soorten militair materieel voorzien, maar wij accepteren de beschuldiging niet dat we Iran helpen met inlichtingen", verklaarde minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Sergej Lavrov in een interview met de Franse televisie.

Rusland heeft nauwe banden met Iran en al snel na het begin van de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten waren er berichten dat ook inlichtingen zijn gedeeld. De Oekraïense president Volodymyr Zelensky zei deze week dat Rusland zo probeerde de Amerikanen te "chanteren". Er zou zijn aangeboden te stoppen met het delen van Russische militaire informatie met Iran als de VS hun inlichtingensteun aan Oekraïne zouden staken.

Lavrov verklaarde op zijn beurt dat algemeen bekend is waar de Amerikaanse bases in het Midden-Oosten zich bevinden. "Deze coördinaten zijn geen geheim dat doorgegeven moet worden."

LONDEN (ANP) - De Britse marktwaakhond CMA start een onderzoek naar Just Eat, onderdeel van het concern achter het Nederlandse Thuisbezorgd, en vier andere bedrijven omdat zij mogelijk "neppe en misleidende" reviews op hun sites plaatsten. De toezichthouder onderzoekt onder meer of de bedrijven lage beoordelingen expres niet publiceerden, personeel vroegen om positieve reviews te schrijven, of kortingen aanboden in ruil voor positieve reviews.

Bij bezorgdienst Just Eat kijkt CMA of het sterbeoordelingssysteem wel volgens de regels die consumenten beschermen werd gebruikt. Uit het onderzoek moet blijken of Just Eat bepaalde supermarkten en restaurants meer sterren gaf dan ze eigenlijk verdienden. Hierdoor kunnen consumenten mogelijk een misleidend beeld krijgen van de kwaliteit die bepaalde zaken leveren wanneer zij kiezen waar te bestellen.

CMA onderzoekt ook de bedrijven Autotrader, Feefo, Dignity en Pasta Evangelists.

MIAMI (ANP) - Titelverdediger Aryna Sabalenka heeft zich ten koste van Elena Rybakina geplaatst voor de finale van het tennistoernooi van Miami. De Belarussische nummer 1 van de wereldranglijst was met 6-4 6-3 te sterk voor de mondiale nummer 2 uit Kazachstan.

Het was de derde ontmoeting tussen de twee topspeelsters dit jaar. Rybakina versloeg haar rivale in de finale van de Australian Open in januari, waarna de Belarussische twee weken geleden voor het eerst de eindstrijd in Indian Wells won. Sabalenka is op jacht naar haar eerste zogeheten Sunshine Double, oftewel opeenvolgende zeges in de toptoernooien van Indian Wells en Miami.

Sabalenka treft in de finale de Amerikaanse Coco Gauff. De nummer 4 van de wereld gunde donderdagavond Karolina Muchova uit Tsjechië slechts twee games: 6-1 6-1.

​Wetenschappers hebben slecht nieuws voor iedereen die dagelijks een product of dienst gebruikt of voedsel eet. Dat blijkt namelijk hartstikke kankerverwekkend te zijn. “Het is al langer bekend dat voedsel, producten en diensten kankerverwekkend zijn, maar de concentratie van kankerverwekkende stoffen blijkt nu 35 keer hoger dan verwacht”, aldus een van de wetenschappers van het onderzoeksinstituut TNO.

“Wij onderzochten bijvoorbeeld mensen die ‘s ochtends een eitje bakken en daarna een kiwi eten. Ja, dan heb je gewoon gelijk onwijs veel kankerwekkende stoffen te pakken. Denk aan: de pan, het gas, de spatel, het ei, de kiwi. Maar goed, nu is een eitje en kiwi als ontbijt ook wel een beetje de kat op het spek binden natuurlijk.”

Wetenschappers geven voor iedereen die kankerverwekkende stoffen wil vermijden het advies mee: blijf weg van producten, diensten en voedsel.
