Yesterday the Conservative party said that it wanted to ban political parties from distributing campaign literature in a foreign language. Announcing a plan to propose an amendement to the representation of the people bill to make this law, the shadow communities minister Paul Holmes said:

Campaigning in a foreign language as the Greens did in Gorton and Denton only fosters greater division. A coherent national culture relies on shared values, and an inclusive electoral process relies on a common tongue.

I think it’s for political parties to choose how they campaign and communicate with British voters. If they’re using British money that is funding their campaigns and they’re speaking to people who have the right to vote, then why would you not show those voters the respect of communication?

What fuels division is Nick Timothy standing up and singling out Muslim forms of worship for a ban when he’s not applying that to forms of worship that other religions are talking about.

It just doesn’t compute, does it? I worked in Number 10. Briefly, I had a Number 10 phone. There was a paranoia about devices like that falling into other people’s hands.

And so whether it was the Met Police, whether it was Morgan McSweeney, and what sounds like pretty evasive set of reporting, even when you look at that transcript, or whether it was the Number 10 security team following up something that at the time they could not have been sure had not been taken by a state actor, a phone with all sorts of government secrets potentially in it, that’s precisely why people in government have two separate phones.

I believe the report was made. McSwindle didn’t mention that he was the chief of staff to the PM. A significant omission of he’d wanted the police to prioritise the offence.

‘You’re the first celebrity from the village!” This is Ahmet, a teenager from an isolated farming community in North Macedonia who is all over TikTok after being filmed chasing his sheep through an illegal rave in a field. His flock of bassline junkies escaped their pen and charged straight over to the rave, to the hilarity of the clubbers. It’s a funny moment in Georgi M Unkovski’s totally charming coming-of-ager, a film with serious points but choosing to make them with kindness and a mostly sunny worldview.

Arif Jakup plays Ahmet, a 15-year-old whose face is already weatherbeaten to the shade of a conker; he lives with his dad (Aksel Mehmet) and younger brother Naim (Agush Agushev). Life is tough on their tiny farm in the mountains: Ahmet had to quit school to look after the sheep; his little brother hasn’t spoken since their mum died. Ahmet worships his neighbour Aya (Dora Akan Zlatanova) like a goddess; she has lived in Germany but is back to be married off to an older man in the village. Jakup and Zlatanova, two nonprofessional actors, give lovely natural performances: he’s bashful and adorable; she’s worldly-wise. So Aya can practise dance routines with her friends, Ahmet turns DJ, pimping his tractor with speakers.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Asielminister Bart van den Brink (CDA) doet in een brief een "klemmend beroep" op gemeenten om met spoed noodopvangplekken voor asielzoekers te regelen. Dit is een van de maatregelen die moeten voorkomen "dat de opvang de komende weken onbeheersbaar wordt". Ook worden zoveel mogelijk asielzoekers geplaatst in bestaande locaties, als dat veilig kan. Dat kunnen ook meer mensen zijn dan afgesproken met de gemeenten.

"De asielketen loopt tegen de grenzen van het mogelijke aan en dat is de afgelopen tijd weer duidelijk zichtbaar door de grote druk op het aanmeldcentrum in Ter Apel en de gevolgen die dat heeft voor de directe omgeving", begint Van den Brink zijn brief.

Al sinds januari zitten in het aanmeldcentrum in Ter Apel meer asielzoekers dan het afgesproken maximum van 2000. In de nacht van dinsdag op woensdag sliepen hier zelfs 2170 asielzoekers, het hoogste aantal in anderhalf jaar. Door krapte heeft het Centraal Orgaan opvang asielzoekers (COA) grote moeite om plekken in asielzoekerscentra in andere gemeenten te vinden waar deze mensen terecht kunnen.

'Zeer onwenselijke situatie'

De minister noemt ook dat een aantal opvanglocaties in het land "noodgedwongen" langer openblijft. Momenteel zijn er 4500 opvangplekken te weinig en dat tekort loopt volgens de minister deze zomer op naar 7900. Hij vindt het een "zeer onwenselijke situatie" dat het COA zich momenteel niet aan de afspraken met gemeenten kan houden. "Dat raakt aan het onderlinge vertrouwen, maar ook aan de solidariteit tussen gemeenten."

De bewindsman hoopt dat de twee strenge asielwetten van het kabinet-Schoof, waarover de Eerste Kamer nog moet stemmen, het Europese migratiepact en de spreidingswet op den duur zorgen dat het aantal asielzoekers omlaaggaat en dat er voldoende opvangplekken zijn. "Zowel het beperken van de instroom als het toegroeien naar een evenwichtig opvanglandschap kost echter tijd."

Anders dan zijn voorgangers onder het kabinet-Schoof wil Van den Brink de spreidingswet gaan handhaven. Dat houdt in dat de minister erop toeziet dat gemeenten zorgen voor een afgesproken aantal opvangplekken en kan ingrijpen als dat na herhaaldelijk waarschuwen niet gebeurt. Van den Brink hoopt die bevoegdheid niet te gebruiken en dat gemeenten zelf met opvangplekken komen, doordat hij de wet handhaaft.

In het Dordrechts Museum is nu de tentoonstelling ‘Water en Licht’ te zien rondom topstukken van de 19de-eeuwse Engelse schilder William Turner. Maar die tentoonstelling is niet het enige dat een bezoek aan Dordrecht de moeite waard maakt.

​Een jonge Nederlandse jongen (1500 volgers) die Andrew Tates ophefmethode probeert na te doen is succesvol bestreden met een reactievideo op Instagram. Dat maakt de jongen bekend op zijn eigen social media-kanalen. “Ik roep dingen specifiek ophef te creëren en aandacht te krijgen, en ik moet zeggen: de laatste reactievideo die daarop werd gemaakt heeft mij gebroken. Als er een reactie komt op een video die ik maakte om een reactie te krijgen hoeft het voor mij niet meer.”

De reactievideomaker (209.000 volgers) beklaagt zich in een 2,5 minuten durende video over hoe stom het is dat iemand er dit soort ideeën op nahoudt: “heel stom”. Ze verwijt de Nederlandse jongen (inmiddels 6000 volgers) rond minuut 1,5 dat hij het allemaal voor de aandacht doet.

Vanavond vertellen de twee influencers over hun journey bij RTL Tonight. De jonge influencer (nu: 7500 volgers) gaat daar naar verluidt ook bekend maken dat hij zich vanaf nu gaat richten op het maken van yoga- en welness-content. “Ik geloof niet in vaccins.”
