A strange piece of software has recently landed on the PC gaming store Steam. And “software” feels like the cleanest way to describe it. Existing somewhere between a full-blown life sim, a science project and a kind of haunted fish tank, Anlife: Motion-learning Life Evolution probably would have disappeared without making much impact if it wasn’t for one unusual factor. Several years ago some of its creators were absolutely roasted on camera by one of the genuine legends of Japanese animation.

Back in 2016, Hayao Miyazaki, the director of movies such as Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, was shown new technology that used AI in order to animate models. Faced with a zombie that utilised its head to move by knocking its skull against the ground and wriggling its body like a fish, Miyazaki declared what he had seen was “an insult to life itself”. It’s hard not to watch the clip without feeling slightly seared – but now, a decade later, the ashen-faced developers from that room have sufficiently recovered to make their work widely available.

Leca stands for lightweight expanded clay aggregate. Unlike soil, it is inert and doesn’t feed the plant. Its job is to hold moisture and air around the roots, while you provide everything else via a diluted fertiliser solution. Water sits at the bottom of the pot, and the clay wicks it upwards, keeping the root zone evenly damp.

Het schuim is ook bij woningen in Capelle aan den IJssel ontdekt.

Een auto is dinsdagochtend rond 09:45 uur uit de bocht gevlogen op de Beijerlandselaan in Rotterdam-Feijenoord. De wagen belandde op een stenen blok en botste op drie geparkeerde deelscooters.

Het was bedoeld om huizen energiezuiniger te maken, maar heeft ondertussen een groot risico voor de volksgezondheid veroorzaakt. De GGD wil dan ook een verbod op UF-schuim, een isolatiemateriaal dat in tienduizenden Nederlandse spouwmuren zit.

Bewoners melden ernstige gezondheidsklachten en krijgen het dringende advies hun huis onmiddellijk te verlaten, aldus Zembla. Het onderzoeksplatform meldt dat op minstens zeven locaties problemen zijn ontstaan, onder meer in Elst, Dalfsen, Dedemsvaart, Capelle aan de IJssel, Purmerend, Oostzaan en Nieuwegein.

In meerdere woningen werden zulke hoge concentraties formaldehyde gemeten dat de GGD bewoners adviseerde per direct hun huis te verlaten. Sommige huizen staan inmiddels al jaren leeg.

Kankerverwekkend

UF-schuim – niet te verwarren met purschuim – bevat formaldehyde. Die stof staat op de lijst van zeer zorgwekkende stoffen (ZZS) omdat ze kankerverwekkend is en dna kan beschadigen. Op korte termijn kan blootstelling leiden tot benauwdheid, hoofdpijn en eczeem. Op lange termijn dreigen ernstiger gevolgen, zoals keel- en neuskanker en leukemie.

“Wat de GGD betreft, zouden we het nu moeten gaan verbieden”, zegt milieu-epidemioloog Jeroen de Hartog van GGD Utrecht op BNNVARA. Ook Ad Ragas, hoogleraar risicoanalyse van chemische stoffen aan de Radboud Universiteit, is duidelijk: er is geen dosis die absoluut veilig is. “Ik zou mijn huis nooit van mijn leven laten isoleren met UF-schuim.”

In Dalfsen staan twee appartementencomplexen al drie jaar leeg vanwege aanhoudend hoge formaldehydewaarden. Elders mochten bewoners maandenlang slechts in een paar kamers verblijven.

Al 45 jaar bekend

Opmerkelijk is dat de risico’s al decennia bekend zijn. Uit interne documenten blijkt dat het ministerie van Volksgezondheid in 1980 al een verbod overwoog. Maar Volkshuisvesting wees op de hoge kosten van vervanging. Anders dan in Canada bleef UF-schuim toegestaan.

Ironisch genoeg wint het materiaal juist nu terrein, omdat na-isolatie wordt gestimuleerd in het kader van verduurzaming. Het schuim is eenvoudig van buitenaf in spouwmuren te spuiten.

Wat als je het in huis hebt? De GGD adviseert goed te ventileren. Bij klachten: contact opnemen met de GGD. Zelf meten met online gekochte meters raadt de dienst af; die zijn niet altijd betrouwbaar. Ondertussen wacht het ministerie op nieuw GGD-onderzoek.
