The 10.58 to who knows where!

The 10.58 to who knows where!

A Queensland Rail (NGR set) crosses the Brisbane River on the 1978 opened Merivale Bridge heading towards I don't know. Could be just Park Road down the line a few stations, bayside Cleveland or all the way to Varsity Lakes (really, West Burleigh) on the Gold Coast.

This bridge when opened connected two separate parts of Brisbane's rail system eliminating a more indirect route via Corinda. I was fortunate at the time to be invited on the opening train. Strangely enough I was situated near Senator Neville Bonner who now has his own bridge named after him in the "downtown" (to use the American term) part of Brisbane city.

The other bridge in the background is the much newer "Go Between" bridge named after a local Brisbane singing group that links northside Brisbane to South Brisbane and West End. Frustratingly for a short bridge is carries a toll and in theory replaces the common road use and free Victoria Bridge which is now confined to pedestrians, cyclists, buses and taxis.

Lastly, it is interesting to note that both railway terminii mentioned were on lines partially closed in the 1950's/60's and rebuilt in later years with population growth and overcrowded roads. The Gold Coast line is yet to be extended to at least the GC airport not so far from its previous Tweed Heads NSW terminus while the branch (or mainline if you will) to Southport could never be resurrected because of urban growth. Short term political solutions in the first place that cost multi-million dollars to restore. The Gold Coast line is so busy, three new stations are in the course of being added on the previously closed section south of Beenleigh and a major diversion with additional tracks is being built in the Logan City area to allow more trains and fast trains to overtake all stations locals!

Apologies for the length of the description but those who know me will also know detailed captions are important. Always extra important for historical purposes with transport subjects.

If the Shoe Fits...

What kind of running or walking shoes are the best? There are a number of other factors that you can ignore. For example, "we used to prescribe a shoe based on foot type, so if you had flat feet or pronating feet, we'd recommend a motion control shoe," says Esculier. (Pronation is the natural inward rolling motion of your foot when it lands. When people overpronate, their foot rolls in too far.) "But that's been debunked by several studies. We shouldn't be recommending it because it changes nothing related to your injury risk. So selecting a shoe based on your foot type is not indicated." --- The article discusses the difference between minimalist and maximalist shoes, and the pros and cons of each.

"You can also ignore claims about the type of absorption used in a shoe's midsole, says Esculier. "Many companies have their own branded technology, like the Asics Gel, the New Balance Fresh Foam, or the Adidas Boost." The premise is that those foams or gels in the midsole will reduce impact and, presumably, injury. "But research shows that the hardness or softness of the midsole is irrelevant in terms of injury prevention." " ---- You may have heard that you should get a new pair after 300 to 500 miles of use. Ignore that advice, says Esculier. It comes from shoe manufacturers, and there's no evidence to support it. His recommendation: "Change your shoes when they don't feel comfortable anymore, or when they are broken down or deformed, regardless of how many miles they have been used for."

Who was El Mencho, the former police officer who co-founded an ultraviolent cartel in Mexico?

Drug lord who was killed by Mexican special forces on Sunday led a cartel known for aggression and military-style arsenal

The drug lord “El Mencho”, who was killed on Sunday by Mexican special forces, was the co-founder and leader of a gang that in recent years had become the country’s most powerful criminal organisation: the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

While less internationally famous than the Sinaloa cartel of the now imprisoned Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the CJNG is a household name in Mexico, where it is known for its displays of ultraviolence and its big, military-style arsenal.

Venezuela laat 23 politieke gevangenen vrij

GUADALAJARA (ANP) - In meerdere staten in Mexico blijven scholen maandag gesloten.
