From his monumental, meditative installation of 100 million hand-painted porcelain sunflower seeds on the floor of Turbine Hall at Tate Modern to architectural columns wrapped in 14,000 salvaged life vests worn by refugees, artist-activist Ai Weiwei has long tapped into the power of scale, repetition, and symbols to plumb cultural heritage and expose societal issues.
Ai is known for his wide-ranging practice that encompasses large-scale installations, video, architecture, photography, public art, and more. This spring, TASCHEN releases a fully revised monograph titled Ai Weiwei. Updated Edition, building upon the initial volume published a decade ago.
Originally published right after Ai left China, unsure if he’d ever be able to return due to the country’s hostility toward his critical practice, this new volume happens to coincide with the artist’s first trip home after 10 years away.
The new edition chronicles the Chinese artist’s global practice, from his time spent in New York City in the 1980s to his well-known multimedia Zodiac series to recent, architectonic LEGO compositions.

MILAAN (ANP) - Voor Kjeld Nuis voelt het brons op de 1500 meter bij de Spelen van Milaan alsof hij goud heeft gewonnen. De 36-jarige schaatser pakte na zijn olympische titels van Pyeongchang en Beijing voor de derde Spelen op rij een medaille op de schaatsmijl. "Het meest realistische vandaag was brons en als ik dat dan haal, heb ik het hoogste haalbare gepresteerd. Dan moet je supertrots zijn."
Nuis vond het "krankzinnig" dat hij deze olympische cyclus toch weer afsluit met een medaille. "Dat ik 1.42,82 rij waar het moet, dat had ik niet durven dromen. Ook niet dat het zo'n mooie rit zou worden", zei hij over zijn race tegen de Chinees Ning Zhongyan, die hem met 1.41,98 versloeg en goud won.
Het traject naar zijn derde Olympische Spelen is daarmee helemaal geworden wat hij zich ervan had voorgesteld. "Alleen in mijn hoofd had ik van Ning gewonnen", zei hij. "Negen van de tien keer vannacht in mijn hoofd tenminste. Maar de tijden die hij rijdt, daar is echt niet tegenop te rijden."
AMSTERDAM (ANP) - Ook de HEMA roept klanten op speel- en knutselzand terug te brengen naar de winkel, omdat er mogelijk asbest in het product zit. "Na extra onderzoek is gebleken dat in minimaal één buisje van de producten asbest is aangetroffen", meldt de HEMA op de website. Eerder riepen winkels als Action en Top1Toys speelgoed met zand terug.
Het gaat bij de HEMA om knutselzakken met roze en paars zand, met groen en blauw zand, om 'zandstrooiers 6 stuks', de 'zandcreaties magneten' en de 'zandcreaties kaarten'. Een deel van de producten is tot vorige week woensdag in de winkel verkocht. HEMA zegt alle speelzandartikelen terug te roepen om elke vorm van risico uit te sluiten.
De Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit (NVWA) kondigde eerder aan onderzoek te doen naar speelzand. Het AD concludeerde op basis van eigen onderzoek dat er asbest in diverse producten zat. Als asbestvezels worden ingeademd, kan dit schadelijk zijn voor de gezondheid. Op lange termijn kan het bijvoorbeeld longkanker veroorzaken.
