ROTTERDAM (ANP) - Opnieuw zijn mankementen ontdekt in een belangrijke brug waar een snelweg overheen gaat: in de westelijke Suurhoffbrug richting de Maasvlakte zijn scheuren geconstateerd, meldt Rijkswaterstaat. Die zitten in een van de hoofdliggers. Omwille van de veiligheid sluit de wegbeheerder de twee gewone rijstroken af. Al het verkeer moet over de vluchtstrook.

"We nemen deze maatregel om de belasting van de brug per direct te verminderen", legt Rijkswaterstaat uit. De brug over het Hartelkanaal is onderdeel van de A15. Er ligt een oostelijke Suurhoffbrug naast.

HILVERSUM (ANP) - Acteur Stefan de Walle stopt per direct met zijn rol als Sinterklaas in Het Sinterklaasjournaal. De Walle vertolkte de rol sinds 2011. Wie de nieuwe Sinterklaas wordt, maakt de NTR nog niet bekend.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Volgens VVD-fractieleider Ruben Brekelmans is zijn partijgenoot minister Eelco Heinen van Financiën niet teruggefloten door coalitiepartijen D66 en CDA. "Ik wil dat even rechtzetten, het beeld dat is ontstaan, dat de minister teruggefloten zou zijn." Volgens Brekelmans "werkt het altijd zo" dat de minister van Financiën "het initiatief neemt" en daarin een coördinerende rol heeft.

Hij hekelt dat er "een spin" is ontstaan rondom de VVD-minister. "Het kabinet heeft een inventarisatie gemaakt van wensen van de oppositie. En natuurlijk is daar door de coalitie over gesproken. Er waren nogal uiteenlopende wensen en het ging om hoge bedragen."

Later in het debat zei Joost Eerdmans van JA21 tegen Brekelmans dat hij de minister van Financiën heeft horen zeggen dat die "een linkerbeen heeft moeten bijtrekken," nadat het eerste concept klaar was. Dagblad NRC schreef deze week in een reconstructie dat D66 en CDA de eerste tabellen van Heinen "te rechts" vonden.

A Paris court has awarded €1 to Kim Kardashian for having been the victim of an armed robbery in the French capital in 2016, the amount of compensation she had asked for, according to a lawyer involved in the case.

This week, the Electoral Commission warned that harassment and intimidation are changing how candidates campaign, what they feel able to do and whether they stand again. This is a threat to our democracy – and we cannot ignore it.

The figures are stark. Commission research into the May 2026 local and mayoral elections in England found that 55% of candidates said harassment or intimidation was a problem, up from 47% in 2025. Women, ethnic minority candidates and those with disabilities were most likely to encounter abuse. The experience was so unpleasant that a third considered not standing again.

It’s a question that has taxed musical thinkers for centuries: just what is it about one composer’s music that makes it more distinctive than anyone else’s? Entire disciplines of academic thought, of music analysis and historical musicology, as well as the formation of classical music’s canon of “great” composers, have been given over to this single idea: can it be proved that Mozart, say, was measurably “better” than other composers?

Our instinctive feeling about the sensual magic of Mozart’s music is part of the equation, but accounting for precisely how his pieces can sustain a lifetime of listening, why their pleasures never seem to pall and are still capable of seeming to surprise us even when we know them inside out: that’s the million-dollar musicological question.

Matt Fitzpatrick, the world No 4, has admitted to reservations over appearing at the DP World Tour’s end of season events in Abu Dhabi and Dubai because of the conflict in the Middle East. The Englishman, who is due to defend the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, has accused the Tour of being “very vague” over plans to retain or move the tournaments. In Fitzpatrick’s mind, it is a “no brainer” to play elsewhere but believes his sentiment will not feature strongly in the thoughts of the Tour’s hierarchy.

Fitzpatrick even suggested Formula One is reconsidering staging the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in December after races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were called off this year due to the Iran war, though it remains on the calendar.

Nee, helemaal niet verrassend dat het Zita Pels en haar matroosjes niet boeit dat die knoeperd voor ruim 100.000 eurootjes per dag mooi kan blijven liggen waar z'n wortels al jaren liggen drijven.

​Er is de VVD veel aan gelegen om jongeren meer aan het werk te krijgen. De partij zet dit voornemen kracht bij door arbeid zwaarder te gaan belasten.

“Als dit jongeren niet motiveert om langere werkweken te gaan draaien, dan weet ik het ook niet meer”, verklaart Ruben Brekelmans, die naar eigen zeggen lang op zoek is geweest naar een oplossing om de arbeidsmarkt aantrekkelijker te maken.

“Ik heb hier veel met Eelco (Heinen, red.) over gespart in de afgelopen maanden”, reconstrueert Brekelmans. “We zeiden tegen elkaar: werken moet weer gaan lonen voor de overheid. Hij was natuurlijk druk bezig met de miljoenennota en vertelde dat hij 11 miljard nodig had om de vermogensbelasting recht te trekken. Dat geld moest ergens vandaan komen. Tegelijkertijd maakte ik me ernstig zorgen over al die luie Gen Z’ers die te beroerd zijn om vijf dagen in de week te werken. Toen viel het kwartje: we moeten arbeid meer gaan belasten.”

Volgens minister Heinen van Financiën ligt jongeren voortaan geen strobreed in de weg om zo veel mogelijk aan het werk te gaan. “Als je zo royaal belasting mag afdragen over de extra uren die je maakt, dan heb je geen enkele reden meer om minder dan veertig uur te werken. We zijn ongelofelijk trots dat we dit mogelijk hebben kunnen maken voor al die ongemotiveerde jongeren. Tegen hen zeg ik: geen dank.”
